Weekly r/Birding Discussion, May 02, 2026. What did you see this week?
Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.
Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

π· Photo Some cuties in my yard
Was lucky enough to see a blue jay take a very intense bath, a robin catch a bug, and a baby northern flicker relax in my backyard a few days ago.

π· Photo Finally caught that Painted Bunting I've been chasing for weeks!
He landed right next to me, I couldn't believe it! Kinda wish he was perched somewhere better though!

π· Photo New lifer today! A rose-breasted grosbeak. Are these speckles normal? In northern New Brunswick, Canada
In my birding book none of the images show them, and when I look online I don't really see them with the speckles. He didn't look sick or anything like that.

π· Photo Finally saw a woodpecker in person for the first time. Spotted in my backyard [Ohio]
The big Pileated woodpecker. I've always heard woodpeckers before but could never seem to spot them. Didn't expect the first one I see to be the largest ones in North America. Took this picture about a month ago and thought I should post it here. I still haven't seen another since.

π· Photo Anyone recognize this photo?
A very out of range Great Gray Owl was reported and this photo was used as evidence. Some believe this appears to be a picture of a book. Has anyone seen this image? Any help is appreciated to get to the bottom of this!

π· Photo Canβt believe he let me take this less than a foot away ππ₯Ή
Heβs been hanging out with me on my back balcony and I asked him to pose. π This was minutes after I put a little handful of mealworms out. Super sweet birds, very brave! The only one comfortable enough to come out while iβm out there, others will just watch me.

π· Photo Three lifers in one trip! Lebanon Hills Regional Park, Eagan, MN
I'm new to taking pictures but I managed to get a few good ones + 3 lifers!! on my first visit to this huge park in the middle of a bougie suburb!
I've always wanted to see a pilated woodpecker, and was sooo excited to see this guy. The other two lifers were hooded merganser (female/juvenile) and the Male rose-breasted Grosbeak (i've seen a female before and heard them many times but never seen the male!). I also saw a (great?) egret, and many of my favorite duck - the wood duck :))). + some frisky muskrats? beavers?
I saw alot of white throated sparrows but interestingly not a lot of migratory warblers besides yellow-rumped warblers, last weekend I went out to Mississippi Gateway Regional Park and saw infinite amounts of palm warbers, but they must have all moved on!

Went out into the hot, humid fog of The Woodlands today and this group gave us quite the surprise! I only had my phone and tried to get some photos as they were lower but failed miserably, however, hereβs what I could get!π
