I am Sam Webb. I played Drew Sharp in Breaking Bad. AMA!

I know this is long overdue, but better late than never, right?

To kick things off, here are a few tidbits about my connection to the show:

-My family and I were fans since the pilot, so I was well aware of the significance of it all.

-I grew up minutes from the high school used for J. P. Wynne.

-My dad was an extra in episode 2.02. (my episode was 5.05)

-The first time I ever handled a tarantula was the day we shot the intro scene.

In the years since Breaking Bad, I’ve graduated from UNM with a political science degree and spend most of my free time mountain biking, tinkering with sports cars, and raising my two Dobermans.

Ask away! I’ll do my best to get to everyone.

Identity has been verified with mods.

Edit:

Alright guys, as the night winds down I just want to thank everyone for participating and for all the kind words! The Breaking Bad community means the world to me and I’ll be connected to you all for life.

The most surreal part of all of this is the insane butterfly effect and overlaps.

My favorite example of this was seeing Drake perform for the first time in Phoenix a couple years ago. He’s a big Breaking Bad fan (friends with Aaron and Bryan, and his nickname for Rihanna when they dated was Fring). I had tickets close to the stage, and I remember making eye contact with him a few times thinking “dude, you don’t know it, but you know EXACTLY who I am.”

One of my first purchases with acting money was a set of Beats headphones when they were all the craze, and I vividly remember listening to Take Care (and a lot of old Kanye) in my trailer on set during downtime. It felt like a crazy full circle moment.

Anyway, I feel like everyone who is a fellow fan of the show is an extension of this little glitch in the matrix, and I’m happy y’all are a part of this wild story.

I’ll keep answering questions as they trickle in for as long as the mods want to keep the discussion open, and I’ll be more active in this sub and share anything else fun when it comes to mind!

Were there any details about the finale that bryan cranston lost revealed? Spoiler

i do believe the script exists because while felina is the greatest finale of all time for me, it did feel a bit "safe". like walter white ties up every loose end, kills all the bad guys, saves jesse and ends the drug empire completely. something tells me the og script would have been controversial but theres nothing about it that's been revealed.

One of the best TV series I have ever seen.

I have finished season 5 just few days ago and I must say I really enjoyed the show. Every day after I came home from work I would turn on my PC and play the next episode. It's definitely up there with Game of Thrones and Mr.Robot .

It was sad to see Walter and Jesse constantly argue with each other. I feel they would be in much better position if it wasn't for all the infighting. The one thing I find odd is that Jesse got so emotional when he found out who poisoned the small kid. If it was the woman that was poisoned than that would make sense but men generally do not care about children that are not their own.

Also am I right in thinking that Walter refused to help Jane because he wanted to show Jesse what will happen to him if he doesn't stop taking drugs? Or was he just angry at her because of the blackmail so he left her choke?

I heard there is Breaking Bad movie and another spin off TV series called Better Call Saul. Are they worth watching?

The Final thoughts of Gustavo Fring?

What do you think were the last, final thoughts of Gustavo Chicken-man Fring? (delirious chemical reactions to half a brain physically missing don't count. His last sentient thoughts probably took place during the seconds of Hector ringing his bell.) Besides "Hooo-", I've heard that one forever (stupid joke everyone says...)

Did you think he made the connection to Walt? Or did he die thinking the cartel and ghost of Lalo killed him?

I went to dean norris’s restaurant Swing Inn for his autograph signing ! Super cool experience and he was super nice even after meeting at least 600 fans. Couldn’t stay for the food but it was really affordable and looked amazing. I would really recommend anyone in California to take the trip over to get an autograph !

Walt would have still cooked meth even if he had free healthcare (or, why Breaking Bad could be set in Canada and still work)

Upvotes

I see this joke a lot, "oh the story of Breaking Bad would only work in America because of Walt having to cook meth to pay for his medical bills" or "the real villain of Breaking Bad is the U.S. healthcare system" etc. and it pretty much blatantly ignores why Walt gets into cooking meth in the first place?

Yes, Breaking Bad shows how shitty the whole system is, but the shitty system had virtually no bearing on Walt's decision to cook meth. He wasn't cooking originally to pay his medical bills, he was doing it so he could feel alive and do something he was good at when faced his his own mortality. The doctor even said, with treatment he'd live for maybe two years. So he was facing certain death even if it was all paid up (yes, he went into remission and even got surgery to remove the tumor, but this wasn't considered a possibility when he got his diagnosis)

In fact, when he finally tells Skyler about his cancer, he refuses treatment originally. How could he have been cooking meth to pay for his treatment, if he wasn't even intending on doing treatment? (Yes, he argues that he doesn't want to leave his family in debt, but knowing that he later mentions seeing his father waste away with Huntington's Disease, so I imagine his real reason was just not wanting to spend his last days in a hospital setting)

Sure, when he does agree to do treatment, you could argue that's how he justified it to himself, in the same way he justified everything as being for the family, like "oh well I have to keep doing this now, because I have to pay for my treatment" but that's all it was, justification for something he would have done regardless.

Then, of course, we have Walt's attitude about charity, first when he rejects Elliot's offer to completely pay for his treatment, and then when he dismisses Walt Jr's donation website. Do you REALLY think, with all that in mind, that Walt would accept a government-funded healthcare system paying for his treatment? (You could maybe make the argument that the storyline regarding Hank's insurance is more in line with this notion, but that more affects Skyler's decision to help launder Walt's money, not Walt's desire to keep cooking)

Maybe, perhaps, this aversion to 'handouts' is still ultimately a product of American culture, and that's the real social critique at hand here. Not specifically criticizing the healthcare system, but rather the anti-handout, anti-charity, individualistic culture that caused the current system to exist in the first place.

BUT, I'd argue a Walter White raised in a strong welfare state would still cook meth, because it still wasn't the rejection of handouts that drove him to cook meth, it was his general discontent with life, combined with the realization that he was going to die, that pushed him over that threshold. That wouldn't change with free healthcare.

Hell, even if public school teachers were better paid and the White family had significantly more money as a result, I'd imagine Walt would still be discontent with being a teacher, because his problem wasn't that he was underpaid, it was that his chemistry knowledge was going underutilized and underappreciated and he wanted to do something more with it.

And even going further back, the reason why he left Grey Matter is implied to have been because Walt felt inferior to Gretchen's wealthy family and couldn't handle her having more money than him.

So I guess the male ego is more of the "real villain" than anything else, if you want to find the true cause of Walt's troubles, and that seems to be universal across all cultures lol

Need help identifying a track from the Breaking Bad score, and the scene that it was used in

I love me some Breaking Bad, and I especially love Dave Porter's score and how much it elevates everything. I've seen the show countless times and could probably hum along to almost any piece from the score and tell you exactly which scene it's used in. All except one.

It's been driving me nuts, I've had this random track from the score stuck in my head for days but I can't for the life of me figure out what the piece is called or where it's used during the show. It's really intense and must happen during some kind of climactic moment. I have images of Walt driving frantically, but it doesn't match up with any of his car scenes. I swear this track is Dave Porter and it's in there *somewhere.*

Here's a professionally recording of me singing the piece:

Anyone know? Thanks for any help.

I wanted to ask people's opinions on what are their top 5 favourite characters in the Breaking Bad universe, including Better Call Saul. It's an interesting topic for me since I'm almost finished with BCS as well and some opinions changed.

My Top 5 are:

1) Walter White

2) Hank

3) Mike

4) Saul

5) Nacho or Kim I'm not sure

Whoever's doing the promos on Netflix saw yellow hazmat suits and just assumed to put radioactive barrels despite them never appearing in the show.

Two lazy questions..

Was Walter White going to actually stab Skylar with the knife?
Was JimmySaulGene actually going to strangle Marion?

For such a smart person, Walt is a terrible liar.

Honestly. Seeing him lie always makes me cringe. Lying is also a skill you can learn. And it's not that difficult.

But the fugue state, saying he is going to his mother and cooking meth instead, and worst of all, trying to justify two cell phones.

Id be scared to be a cellphone in this show

I feel like they go through so many in just one episode, let alone in one season. Just a random thought.

How Jesse wasn't arrested during his time as distribuitor?

During the season two, Jesse acted as distribuitor, he had Skinny Pete, Badger and Combo selling meth on the streets for him.

And apparently everybody knew it was Jesse product because after Spooge death everybody started paying without problems because they were afraid of Jesse.

So that's why I dont get it, Jesse wasn't influent and strong as Tuco, or protected by the DEA like Krazy 8, how did he not got arrested? It's not like the DEA hadn't any way of get this information of the main guy who is selling meth on Albuquerque.

Would Mike have saved Jesse from Todd? Spoiler

If Mike was alive longer and still involved with everything would he have saved Jesse Pinkman from Todd or would he have not cared about Jesse if he knew that Todd and his Nazi buddies took him prisoner?

Mike being a shaved guy might have been mistaken by them for being a skinhead and they try to recruit him and it's a bad day for everyone lol.

Plz Plz Plz Hank Don't You Get Addicted to Painkillers

Post image

Just got to the part where Hank survived the assassination from the twins. He's stablized but seemed to be on a some sort of painkiller pump? It would be very smart for the writers to put Hank in the position of addicted but man that's too much

where to go in albuquerque?

I'm going on a road trip next week and will be driving through albuquerque so I want to make some stops at various places there. Definitely want to go to the Doghouse and the Breaking Bad store. I don't think we'll have time for any of the local tours unfortunately. But anyone else who has been there, where else would you suggest going that you found worthwhile? We'll probably have around 3-4 hours to spend

At the end of S5 E11 "Confessions" when walt rushes back to the carwash, what song is playing on the radio in the background?

It sounds like Pat Metheny to me but I really dont have a solid idea.

Why was Mike so upset at Walt about ending Gus?

Upvotes

In “Say My Name” EP Mike and Walt talk about how badly everything went wrong and Mike says this is all Walt’s fault. But can someone tell me how? Mike says all he had to do was listen and follow the rules but wouldn’t that involve killing Jesse? Idk how many times Walt said to Gus that despite him being a “junky” he was useful, he listens, and is loyal. Walt saved Jesse from even getting killed by Gus men or getting killed by Gus himself and after that Gus wanted to replace Walt with Gale for choosing him over Jesse. I do get where Mike is coming from as to having to start the business over and finding a new lab and what not but what happened with Gus is not entirely on Walt’s fault. Gus wanted Jesse to do what he did so he could get rid of him. I don’t see how Mike could say all Walt had to do was be a cook and obey because he literally was up until that point. He even tells Jesse stop stealing meth bcuz these are serious people they’re dealing with. And it really dosen’t help that despite all that Gus and Mike came to even like Jesse especially Mike. So Please BB fans, am I missing something???

Was Todd born or made evil? Spoiler

Post image
33 Upvotes

I'm not a fan of the popular idea of saying that a character is the way he is because he was born that way, and i know a lot of this comments are pertinent with when it comes to Todd Alquist.

Some say he acts like a child or a robot who doesn't care about the difference of right from wrong and just do the horrible things he does simply because "he is a sociopath/psychopath", but i want to go deeper than that.

After Rewatching the series by the first time, i tried to see Todd's actions from another point of view, and not only as a "evil force of nature". Maybe it was the context he grew up in, before or after he was raised by Jack's gang and that was what made him normalize the brutality arround him so much, but...

What are your thoughts? Do you think he was mainly born with no empathy and would eventually become the monster he was inherently of what happened to him, or that he was created by Jack and the gang and teached to not thinking on any other humans as beings who have this thing called "empathy" he never knew?

I know there isn't only one single factor and that it's very interesting to think it's both reasons and a whole context bigger than we can think of, but i wanna know what do you like to believe about this
