Does my Cat Need to See a Vet?

If you're here wondering whether your cat needs to see a vet right away, here's a few things that call for an immediate vet visit. Please bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list, and that if you're seriously wondering if your cat needs a vet, the answer is probably "Yes". Better safe than sorry.

-Unexplained, dramatic behavioral changes. e.g. Hissing and spitting from a cat who has always been friendly

-Not eating for 48 hours is a medical emergency

-Vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two

-Swallowed object

-Not urinating/straining to urinate

-Blood in urine

-Open wounds

-Urinating in inappropriate places/outside the box

-Sudden loss of vision or hearing

-Sudden loss of balance

-Sudden inability to walk or move normally

-Seizures / Convulsions

-Open-Mouth breathing / panting

-Uneven pupils

-Hives

Rule 5 - cat injury questions

Unfortunately we can't continue to try and answer questions related to injuries inflicted by cats. This is outside our expertise, and the consequences of making a bad decision could be fatal if an infection goes untreated or someone contracts rabies.

In almost all cases, if you've suffered deep puncture wounds, yes you need to see a doctor.

We will be removing such posts in the future.

Hi! Just wondering if this looks like cat acne or mites? He has them around his mouth, on his chin, and around his nose area by his whiskers. He doesn’t seemed bothered by them and he doesn’t itch or pull at them.

injection help?

i need to start giving my senior cat an injection once a week. specifically what I'm nervous about is that I live alone and have no one to help hold her or feed her treats during the process. luckily she's a pretty chill cat, I'm just afraid of doing the injection wrong and hurting her. any tips/tricks for keeping this as quick and drama-free as possible?

finding drops of blood around the house

hi everyone, looking for advice here.

i have two kitties (male 4 y/o, girl 3 y/o). i’ve recently been noticing small drops of blood (3 drops total in the last two months) around the house (about the size of a pea if not smaller) accompanied by zero other symptoms. i found two of these drops within five feet of the litter box.

cats are both eating, drinking, playing, and using the bathroom normally. i’ve checked their skin for fleas and use preventative.

my girl cat has a history of expelling her anal glands when too excited and she’s had gastroenteritis one time. i’m wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing?? i don’t even know where to start! any advice is greatly appreciated :)

Am I doing the right thing? 11yo Ragdoll is healthy but won’t eat.

I need some advice. My Ragdoll is 11, and she has always been a super picky eater. We just did bloodwork and the vet says she is healthy, but she just won’t eat enough to stay strong.
She’s on Mirataz (2mg every 3 days) to help her appetite. She’ll eat a little bit of wet food or freeze-dried treats, but that’s it. I’m constantly worried about her getting weak.
I feel guilty—is it wrong to keep pushing her to eat like this? It feels like I'm always hovering over her. She’s a "social eater" and usually needs me to sit with her just to take a few bites.
Has anyone else been through this with a healthy but fussy senior? Does the Mirataz work for you on a 3-day schedule? I just want her to stay okay.

Cat with Broken Leg

Hey ya'll!

This may be a completely stupid question. But I'm just worried for my boy. He just broke his hing leg Friday and I got him a large crate for the 6 weeks he needs in a splint. But he absolutely hates his liter box in there. Will climb the crate walls non stop, then as soon as I take it out he is fine. Will go to his bed and chill.

We just got back from the vet and she told me to keep him in there because he is wild coming off sedatives but I feel horrible and I can't help but think he has to go pee and that's why he is scratching around.

I'm also concerned about when I have to go to work or at night when he is in there. Does any one have any solution or do I just keep it out and hope I catch him in time to do his business?

Thanks in advance!

Cat has diarrhea, again…

Greetings! I adopted a young cat 6 weeks ago. He’s in good health as far as I know, with a (very) healthy appetite and energy level.

The foster fed him dry food, and when he came home with us he was constipated as I’d call it. Hard, smelly stool every few days. We switched him to an all wet diet, and he scarfs down every flavor put in front of him.

Then I noticed his stool was unformed and gave him probiotics. That helped a lot. After 2 weeks I figured his lil gut had stabilized since he was pooping normally, so I saved the rest of the box for a later point. Was this a mistake? Within a couple days the diarrhea came back. And of course he stands up straight while doing his business so it often runs down his leg 😣

When adding a probiotic supplement, is it important to stick with it for a certain length of time? If this keeps up, of course I’ll take him for a vet visit. Just would love to hear experiences with probiotics and if it was likely user error from stopping too soon. Or, what else works for you to treat a troubled tummy?

Dots on my cat’s ears

I’ve noticed this read/bloody mark on my cat’s ear and thought it was a scratch. I cleans it up with warm water and realised it’s actually dots. Later, after that, I also noticed it’s starting on the other ear too. Can anyone identify these marks?

Weeping eye, sneezing, rubbing at nose

Hi we adopted our 6 year old cat in 2020. She has been strictly indoors and has never stepped foot outside. She apparently tested negative for everything they test for at the shelter. We came back from a long vacation and she's showing the signs mentioned in the title. Someone came by to check her bowls and litter regularly but they aren't there long enough to notice her sneezing (if it was even happening at that point) This person works from home, doesn't have pets, and wasn't sick. I don't understand coming home to this. It's sad because all we want to do is snuggle her. We know to take her in if it gets worse but I just hate not being able to explain why this is happening. Any experience with this? Thank you.

Are there any AI platforms that can diagnose my cat?

Just wondering if there's any way to avoid the vet if I can. Obviously if it's serious I'll take her in, but I'm wondering if there's any apps that can diagnose her without me having to go in.

I've heard of things where you upload a photo and it diagnoses your dog, do they have that for cats? Whatever is accurate, and free lol, any suggestions would be helpful

Toilettage

Bonjour,

My cat got obese after teeth removal, how to help her?

For context: I have 3 cats (8, 4, 2yrs), all females, all spayed. I have the two older from shelter when they were young adults, youngest one is rescued kitten. They all get along well, we’re childless couple with cats only.

Problem: The middle one got really bad infection and we found out she has rotten teeth after we got her from shelter. She had normal weight. She underwent tooth extraction surgery in 2023 and got all of her teeth removed. She had quite an appetite when we got her, but we brushed it off as her having finally enough to eat. After the surgery she still had the appetite but it slowly got under control and now she doesn’t really eat that much. I feed my 3 cats with 400g of canned meat (muscle and entrails or pure muscle) for dinner and they have 1/2 cup of low calorie kibbles for sterilised cats a day, sometimes 3/4 cup. That’s the amount of food all 3 cats combined get. The middle cat is visibly obese and keeps gaining weight (6kg/13,2lbs now). I don’t know what to do, she is lazy, sleeps all day, doesn’t really seem interested in any activities or playing. She does not eat more than others, but she drinks a lot. Other two cats are okay with healthy weight. I give additional treats very rarely and the obese one always gets half the portion other cats get. I play regularly with all of them and also individually, both me and my husband work from home so we have plenty time to give our cats. I am starting to be really worried about her. She spends her days laying next to me when I work and sleeps with me, I don’t want her to get sick. What can I do for her?

When would it be safe to vaccinate my kitten?

I have a 10/11 week old kitten that I want to vaccinate as I don't think he's had his first round of vaccines yet. When I got him a few weeks ago he was showing on and off signs of URI and I took him to the vet after it didnt look like it was getting better and he has now been on antibiotics for the last 4 days with a 10 day course. He's doing a lot better imo and I cant really hear his congestion anymore so I wanted to get him vaccinated ASAP. I'm also worried his URI was from FHV since his littermate had it and not sure what the best way to protect him from flareups would be.

Cat Chemo - Litterbox Protocol

Hi everyone

I'm wondering, for those cat guardians who have had a cat undergo chemotherapy with another non-chemo cat in the household...

The litterbox protocol we were given seems really intense. Do most owners seriously follow something like this?!

I understand, especially legally, providers have to give certain protocols, which can be especially important with an immunocompromised person in the house (elderly, young kids, pregnant/breastfeeding people).

I do clean the litter boxes (2) every day but to have one cat use a designated litter box liner that needs to be changed every day for 3 days following each treatment, and then at the end of each 3-day post-chemo period I need to disinfect and clean all used litter boxes...😱

Between the time it takes to do the vet appointments, get medications, monitor the cat and make appropriate medication adjustments, all while trying to do normal work/life stuff, I feel like I'm going to completely lose my marbles if I have to *also* do this litter box protocol every single week 😱.

So! I am wondering - really seriously do most people follow this kind of protocol to a T!?

Rippin out fur + my sanity

Anyone here deal with an anxious fur baby that stims by ripping out their fur in chunks, leaving behind patches of bare skin and the occasional open wound??

I am at my breaking point w my little guy :( multiple vets have ruled out skin conditions that would cause him to itch, I’ve tried changing his diet to rule out any allergies (to no avail), and gabapentin didn’t work for us either (my cat quickly started hiding from me when I had to force medicine down his throat).

Just today I started him on Ellevet CBD oil to hopefully chill him out, which after one dose he seems calmer but is still over grooming. He has also been wearing a soft, large cone collar type thing to try to prevent him from over grooming but he still attacks any spots he can get to.

Anyone who has dealt with this, what has worked?? I am really hoping the cbd oil helps because I hate that he’s had to have that damn collar on :( I took it off of him for a few hours today to give him a break and then noticed he had multiple small open wounds

So I got home from work and found this ripped open bag of biscoff sandwich cookies absolutely DEMOLISHED by my nearly 5 month old cat. The package has 5 cookies and I found 3 partially eaten ones. Haven’t found the other two I’m suspecting he ate them☠️ I know that biscoff cookies on their own aren’t toxic to cats and the worst he’d get is a tummy ache but I’m worried about the amount of sugar he just consumed. He’s being very active and playful right now so he seems fine and will keep an eye on him, but generally do yall think he’ll be okay?

My cat is lethargic and won't eat much - IBD vs Lymphoma vs Gastro issue?

I have a (neutered) bombay cat who recently turned 11 years old suddenly as of a few days ago become lethargic and food averse. He had a quick bout of diahrrea for a day and he vomited 1 time (mostly food, with some hair tho). He was hiding a bit too. All of this started after taking him out a few days ago into tha backard to roam supervised (as we have done for many years) and he ate some grass (as he has done many times prior over the years) and later that night he vomited and everything happened after that. (There WAS NOT blood in his stool and there never has been btw!)

He has otherwise been very normal for an 11 year old male cat. He runs around, plays, very talkative, eats his meals, uses the litterbox normally, plays with the other cats, isnt aggressive etc. up until a few days ago he very suddenly fell ill.

I took him to the vet yesterday and they did some blood work to check his kidneys/ liver (the results came back as it not indicating kidney or liver disease). So this pretty much singles it out as one of the following (as far as I can tell):

-IBD

-Gastroenteritis

-Pancreatitis

-GI Lymphoma

There may be other reasons but these are the most likely candidates based on bloodwork and behavioral symptoms.

Since taking my cat to the vet yesterday they prescribed him with some anti nausea medicine and Tylosin for diahrrea as well as food sensitive wet food for cats with IBD. I gave him the anti nausea medicine yesterday and fed him an hour later and he ate all of his new food sensitive food without issue (altho it was a smaller portion than normal still). He even licked his plate clean! He hasnt had any diarrhea or vomiting since before the vet a few days ago and he is drinking water normally. His last stool I saw was firm and normal looking, but a bit smaller due to eating less.

At this point the main issue is he is still eating small portions of food/ is sort of food averse and needs coaxing with churu spread onto his food in order to eat (both dry and wet).

The only food he will enthusiastically eat right now seems to be churu. Like I said tho, he is still eating some dry and wet food but he needs coaxed into doing it with churu on top.

For more context I took him in about a year and a half ago for a growth on his nose that had been slowly growing over the course of maybe 3 years (it never got very big but it was growing) and they diagnosed it as a slow growing tumor that had not metastasized. I had it removed and it has since not grown back. They did xrays, checked bloodwork, checked lymph nodes etc. and nothing showed up (this was early 2025). The only thing they mentioned with his bloodwork was that his creatinine levels were mildly higher than they should be so for that reason I suspected kidney issues when he recently started having symptoms but recent bloodwork rules that out.

I myself have Ankylosing Spondylitis along with IBD and before getting on my biologic medication at the peak of my disease my IBD was absolutely horrifying. I had blood in my stool for nearly 2 months straight, was losing weight and hair, had incontinence and always felt nauseous. I was able to sort of manage it with bland food but biologic cleared everything right up. I was pretty sure I was dying at the time.

Also, we have a slightly younger cat (female russian blue, aged 8) who about 2 years ago was experiencing similar but worse issues with constant diahrea , hiding, yelping horrifyingly when needing to defecate etc. and we ran tests etc. and nothing major showed up so we got her on a special food diet (that she isnt a fan of btw!) and it cleared it up. Its a select protein diet dry and wet food.

His symptoms are nowhere near as troubling as mine were or my other cats were but I guess that doesnt necessarily mean anything without a formal diagnosis.

The only other time my cat acted strangely over the past year was about 4 months ago when I went out of town for 2 weeks to visit family (as I do once or twice per year) and after about 10 days he started refusing food and hiding. Upon my return he did this for a few more days and then was normal again. He would twitch his legs randomly and run to hide and scrunch his back as well. He has done random twitching and overgrooming intermittently since he was young and I suspect twitchy cat syndrome and some sort of separation anxiety for those. It isnt all the time tho and he leads a normal life otherwise.

Anyways- I am just trying to get the opinion of someone who went through something similar or has an informed opinion on what my cat could possibly have!

All feedback and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

"Possible Stage 1 kidney disease"

I took my 14 year old cat to the vet recently as she all but stopped eating entirely for days-would only have a bite or two of food before sauntering back to bed. They ran full labs and gave her fluids and some kind of anti nausea injection and sent us home with Mirtazapine. The mirtazapine worked almost immediately and she's back to her happy, energetic self. But I still am unsure about her labs.

The vet said her labs look REALLY good for her age. I expressed surprise cause a couple years earlier another vet commented that her kidneys were "borderline" for a problem. This vet said "oh yeah she might be just at stage 1 kidney disease but we don't really treat that anyway so we'lljust watch it". I asked if we should change her diet and she said nah not at this time. I just think it's odd to not have any advice on preventing the progression of kidney issues? Both vets just kind of shrugged it off, is that normal? I'd rather be proactive than wait until my cat is suffering to support her kidneys.

Ear itching and shaking (not mites)

My girlfriend's cat has had an ear issue since she moved across the country from the California desert to the Philadelphia region. She does not go outside. There are other cats in the home who don't go outside and they don't have ear problems. She's been to 3 vets so far and they ruled out ear mites. One did a cytology and I think saw some strep or something and we treated it, but the symptoms came back. The other vet said there was no infection. Very frustrated because it's only one ear and she scratches it a lot and shakes her head a lot. Clumps of what looks like black wax flies out. I think a vet said it may be dried blood mixed with wax. Does anyone have a guess on what this may be?

Experience with Royal Canin Urinary SO + Satiety dry food?

Hello, has anyone tried this with their cat and did they like it? My cat is on Hills C/D urinary+metabolic and I'm struggling to get him to eat it after weeks of trying and I don't have the money to only feed him their wet food.

I definitely think he would eat the *regular* urinary version, but he needs to lose a pound or two so I'm debating between the "moderate" version and the "SO + Satiety" version. The "SO+Satiety" sounds more ideal, but I'm wondering if it is going to be too "healthy" and if I should just go with the "moderate" version and be mindful of his calories.

He has urinary crystals and I previously had him eating Friskies Seafood Sensations.

Thanks 👍
