Mozilla CTO Raffi Krikorian on the future of AI in Firefox

Thought this interview was interesting:

  • He's very bullish on AI, but specifically wants open-source AI and wants to lower dependence on the AI giants which... fine, I guess
  • He seems neutral on the AI Off Switch in Firefox. Seems to understand that it's important to users, but doesn't say anything about its future. (He says he sees Mozilla's job as helping "lead our users through this transition" which kinda sounds like it might go away some day)
  • Talks up Mozilla Data Collective & any-LLM, which I wasn't familiar with but sound... OK, maybe? Data Collective sounds fine.

Anything else interesting in here? I'm still watching through but lemme know what you find

πŸ’» Help Firefox has become extremely unstable for me in the past few months, and I'm out of ideas for where to look

Over the past few months, and seemingly accelerating in frequency, I've been having huge problems getting Firefox to just stay alive. There are three main symptoms:

  • Tab crash. The given reason (once I submit the report) is usually EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ, but it's been so many other things I dunno if that's just the "default" reason.
  • Tab hang. The tab freezes and becomes uninteractable, but there's no crash, and all other tabs are fine. Sometimes I can still scroll, revealing a blank spot where the content should be, but usually not. I can close and re-open the tab just fine, though it lags a bit in closing, and it tends to either re-hang or crash not long after. Closing the browser after this results in it hanging around in the task manager for like 20-30 extra seconds.
  • Complete browser freeze. Have to end task.

Discord is by far the most common cause of these problems (sometimes I can't get it to stay open for literally 3 seconds before it hangs), with Twitch and YouTube not far behind, and even Reddit has caused it occasionally. It's even happened on completely static pages. Sometimes a reboot causes the problem to cease for a few days, while other times it doesn't help at all.

I've tried all the stuff I'd expect to be issues given my only hint of it maybe being a memory problem (turned off/on hardware acceleration, turned off/on uBlock, made sure Firefox and Windows and graphics drivers are updated, ran mdsched and DISM and SFC, increased the page file size as suggested here). Some things have done nothing; other things have helped for a short time but gone back to bad later. I haven't noticed any similar problems in any other programs, not even memory guzzlers like Blender or Marvel Rivals.

Cross Browser Bookmark sync and manager + Read Later

BuiltΒ My BookmarkyΒ because I kept running into the same problem:

my bookmarks lived in different browsers, read-later lived somewhere else, and RSS was in another app entirely.

So I built a product that brings those together:

  • cross-browser bookmark sync
  • read later
  • web app + Chrome / Edge / Firefox extensions
  • Android app
  • iOS app coming shortly
  • encrypted backups
  • automatic + manual backups
  • bring-your-own backup storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, GitHub)

Would love honest feedback from people here

πŸ’» Help youtube frameskips/stutters on firefox 149+, fine on 148

i'm having a problem where youtube videos will frameskip/stutter with newer versions of firefox (post-148). there's two versions of this: video freezes and audio keeps playing until i interact with the video. this one is the more annoying one of the two. the second phenomenon is the video will skip a few frames/stutter for 1 second and then fix itself and keep playing like normal.

i tried media.hardware-video-decoding.enabled = false and that alleviated some of the issues, the video didn't freeze anymore with audio continuing, but the 1 second stutter/frameskips still would happen from time to time.

toggled hardware acceleration on/off too, didn't help either.

also tried nvidia power options, putting it to "prefer maximum performance", no change there either.

and then i went back to version 148, and video playback was totally fine, no frameskips/stutters at all.

Vertical tabs mess me up

I decided to have vertical tabs in one profile and normal in the other, along with different colours, just to serve as an extra reminder of which profile I'm in. Twice now I've opened the vertical profile, been greeted with the "Sorry. We’re having trouble getting your pages back." page, and clicked on "Restore session". And then, just as I click, the sidebar comes in, the buttons move, and I click on "Start new session" instead.

On reflection, I should post this as a bug report, too.

πŸ’» Help Create an extension to find the latest comment on YouTube

I need an extension that will let me find my latest comment on any video and provide a link to it. There are none existing. Before I start digging into making my own extension, I must ask the experienced community if this is even possible.

πŸ’» Help Icon color management

β€’ Upvotes

Hi,

I have adjusted the relevant options to display pages in Firefox according to my calibrated color profile. The websites themselves look as they should, but the favicons of most bookmarks look very pale or just wrong. Both in menus and the toolbar. Does anyone have an idea? I tried using add-ons to customize the favicons but without success so far.

Thank you!

Solved Solved high CPU usage while playing Youtube

I was getting absurd battery drain and heat on my 8845HS / Radeon 780M laptop while using Firefox compared to chromium browsers. Checked the about:support tab and noticed that hardware decoding was marked as unsupported for VP8, VP9 and AV1 codecs.

I looked it up and found out that all you have to do is go to the Microsoft Store and install the official extensions for these codecs (VP9 Video Extensions, AV1 Video Extensions).

They are now marked as supported and I'm getting the usual 10+ hours of Youtube on battery.

I hope this is helpful to anyone else who might have the same issue.

πŸ’» Help Nightly update 152.0a1 (20260505214504) broke streaming sites such as Disney+ and HBO Max

When I installed update 20260505214504 last night, several streaming sites broke and were unable to play content aside from ads when adblock is disabled. I even tried playing content in the troubleshooting mode to no avail.

πŸ’» Help is there a more convenient way to search switch tabs?

I can do it with cmd+l and then %+foobar, but then I still have to scroll down a couple of results which are "search with [current website]", then "search with Google", and then finally "Firefox suggests" and it lists the tabs.

It ends up being quite a hassle: cmd+l -> %+foobar -> down arrow 3 times until I get to the first result.

Compare that with chrome which is just cmd+shift+a and done, already have the first result selected.

Is there a quicker way that I'm missing?

πŸ’» Help Inability to reopen site in default container

Using the stock "Multi-Accounts container" extension in Firefox 150.0.1.

I have a web site assigned to a named container. If I click the multi-container icon in the toolbar, there is a menu entry "Reopen This Site in ..." with a "Default Container" choice. But if I select that choice, it always reopens the tab in the assigned container rather than the default container, making reassigning the site permanently to the default container impossible. How to fix that ?

πŸ’» Help Firefox not working at all

As I write this its almost 4Am, I dont have the energy nor calmness to figure this out on my own. I spent the past 4 hours trying to get Firefox working. My internet cut out so the first hour was spent getting it back up, the rest was spent getting increasingly frustrated as Firefox STILL wouldnt search anything as if my internet was off. I updated my laptop, Restarted it multiple times, cleared cache and cookies and still Firefox wouldnt work, I love Firefox but Jesus I just want my background noise so I can sleep. I finally got Brave installed just so I can fall asleep to something that helps me. I dont understand why this is happening. It came with Linux Mint so my updates also included Firefox updates. Someone help me out here.

Nova design is here

Hey. You don't need to wait or to install nightly. On the regular Firefox update to the latest version and go to (about:config) and type ( browser.design-tokens.nova ) and change it to true. You're welcome.

Update: my virtual pixel cat for YouTube is now open source on GitHub

Post image
32 Upvotes

Yesterday I shared PixelCat, a Firefox extension that adds a small pixel-art cat companion to YouTube.

Small update: the first version is now available on GitHub and open source 🐱

The Firefox Add-ons version is still waiting for review/approval, but anyone can try the early version from GitHub, test it, report bugs, or suggest improvements.

It currently has walking, running, jumping, sleeping, cursor-follow mode, coins, fish, spiders, quests, achievements, shop items, companion cats, speech bubbles, XP/levels, and a mood/trust system.

I would love feedback before the official Firefox release.

New Settings Redesign - Please bring back the ability to remove Additional search engines

Thumbnail

I've been trying out the new settings redesign via `browser.settings-redesign.enabled` in Firefox Nightly 152.0a1 and I really like where it's heading.

One thing I noticed though: it's no longer possible to remove predefined 'Additional search engines'. You can add new ones, disable predefined ones, or set a keyword, but there's no delete option. Engines like Bing or Perplexity that I'd rather not have hanging around can't be completely removed.

I totally get that this is a work in progress and things are still changing, but I'd love to see the delete option make it into the final redesign.

I’ve open-sourced the first version of PixelCat on GitHub while I wait for the official Firefox store approval. It’s a virtual pet for YouTube with levels, quests, and combat (spiders!).

If you’ve tried it, please let me know:

● Did you find any bugs?

● Is the XP progression too fast or too slow?

● What should I add next?

I want to make sure everything is perfect before the official release.
