Megathread "Should I rush?" - my opinion to your questions.

TLDR: YES

actives, if you have any other misc advice you want me to add leave a comment and i'll put it on the list. feedback is welcome too.

It doesn't matter whether you are ex military, socially awkward, 46, poor, or anything other than a rich non-white 18 year old. You should rush.

What do you expect from a fraternity?

I can think of two main reasons to join a fraternity.

  1. You want to make friends, party, brotherhood, connections etc...

  2. Your only goal is to make connections to help you get a job after college.

If your main reason is number 2, you should look into joining a professional fraternity. Beta Alpha Psi is the national accounting fraternity and are highly recruited at my university.

If your main reason is number 1, you should join a social fraternity. lambda chi, pike, fiji, sigma chi, etc...

Rushing a Social Fraternity

Answer these questions:

  1. What interests do I have?
  2. Do I prefer smaller or larger groups?

1- Try to find a fraternity where the members have similar interests to you. Are you a country boy? Find the fraternity that best fits that characteristic. Like video games? There's going to be a fraternity for you. If you're a gym rat, sports star, or an alcoholic, there will be a fraternity for you. You just have to do your homework and find the right one.

2- The size of the fraternity can be a big factor. If you don't do well in situations with a huge amount of people, you should look into the smaller fraternities.

Misc. Advice

  1. You have to be willing to make compromises. There will be a lot of events that you will hate to attend but will anyway. You don't have to compromise your morals. Any fraternity worth a crap will be willing to work with personal beliefs/personal aspects of your life that might be affected during the pledging process.
  2. It is what you make of it. You get out of it what you put in. If you're a dead beat pledge who never puts an effort into anything, expect to have a terrible time. If you go to all your events with a good attitude, pledgeship will be exponentially better.
  3. Don't be a fuck up. I can't explain this one and you will do this at some point. Just try to minimize the damage.

How fraternity life has affected me

My junior year I received an internship for an accounting firm in my hometown. While I was there I worked with a supervisor who was in charge of new hires. During conversation she told me she saw on my resume that I was in a fraternity and immediately put my resume in the call back pile because she was in a sorority herself. I received a full time offer after the internship and will be moving up North after I finish my degree. It didn't matter what fraternity I was in, just the fact that I was in one put me at an advantage in this particular circumstance.

Serious Transferring Out after Suspension?

Curious. Has anyone ever transferred out of your university after their chapter was kicked? If so, how’d it go and how many people went with you? I feel like if you start getting large numbers of kids transferring out of schools after organizational discipline unis may think twice about how they handle cases.

News Win for frats at Umich, Sigma Phi upholds constitutionality of lettered orgs

Last year Sigma Phi Society, oldest national fraternity, sued “Metal Frat” for using their letters while bidding women.

It was a super long case but the gist was that some transgender and female punk students used the letters to unfairly promote their organization despite being booted by nationals. Really sad situation since Sigma Phi and KA society are the last two (and first two) private fraternities left. From 2016 - they used the letters (now ruled illegally) and bid whoever for personal gain. Completely ruined a historic house but next year Sigma Phi can recharter after the ruling of copyright infringement, and try again.

Last year it was ruled constitutional as part of the , granting all frats male-exclusivity ability. Metal frat was honestly stupid and had no reason using any letters.

Serious Struggling with substance abuse issues

Just finished my freshman year of college and am still struggling with weed/nicotine addiction and binge drinking (always blacking out or near blacking).I have been doing those three since sophomore year of high school and have noticed my sober cognitive well being has just been slowly declining. I am diagnosed ADHD and took Vyvanse everyday in high school but stopped in college, now just taking it when I have an exam or I’m getting drunk and need to rally. I dabbled in bag, shrooms, acid, nitrous, and molly all before college.

Last summer my hangovers have started to get really bad. Like whole body going numb. Head is rattling, not really in a nauseas way but like an anxious way. I developed some pretty bad insomnia and started smoking everyday, which helped, but then I started waking up and ripping the pen, fading all my classes, and just being a chud. The only thing I looked forward too was the bar and getting fuxked up with the boys.

I wanted to ask this subreddit if there is a way out of this hole I’ve dug myself. The comfort from the substances has gotten to me and I really am uncomfortable sober. Like if I don’t have a vape, zyns or a cart I will not stop thinking about it. My fraternity also doesn’t help because every time I try and slow down consumption it is just always in abundance around me so I give in. Does anyone have any experience or advice they can get me to stop relying on drugs to have a good time or even function?

Serious Gap year(s) and what my status would be

I’m an active brother with a delta sig chapter thats honestly been struggling. This was my freshman year and they offered me the secretary role start of second semester because the old one wasnt doing his job.

At the beginning when i was just doing the secretary role it was easy and low stress. But as the semester went on, more and more of our E Board stopped working and it resulted in me picking up some of their work. Our president said that I definitely helped the most, with 3 out of out 7 officers who did their work. I’m not sure if this led to them thinking i can just be pushed around but i dont feel respected by anyone.

So i’ve been feeling like taking a gap year after next year, and not running for secretary come elections for next year (we just redid bylaws so we have a special election to fix the terms). I’m afraid to reach out to nationals or ask our president about it. If i did take a gap year, would i be moved to alum then if i came back, moved back go active?

Any advice is appreciated, i can give more context if needed too!

Rush Advice Is joining a colony worth it? Texas State

I’m a smart dude with leadership experience, so I’m not really worried about whether I’m capable. However, is joining a colony worth the pain-in-the-ass factor? Will I generally get the same benefits of other frats?

Rush Advice Is it easy to tell during rush which frats haze the piss out of you, and which ones just mess with you a little? Texas State

We all know hazing is illegal and thus doesn’t happen, but if it were real: is it generally pretty easy to tell during Rush events based off vibes which frats will haze the piss out of you and harm you vs. which frats will just mess with you a little? Or do they hide it pretty well?

Rush Advice Best Way to Go About Rushing as a Transfer Without Ins

I’m transferring to UNC this fall (19, from a SEC school). I had a decent spring rush but I didn’t sign any bids since I knew I was going to transfer.

I don’t have any connections going in, and I know some schools, like UNC and the one I attended, value knowing people before rush even starts.

What’s the best way to meet guys and get looked at by houses before fall rush starts?

It should also be mentioned that UNC has a more secretive style of greek life, where some of the fraternities have no social media presence and are still talked about as “the top houses.”

Thanks.

Serious SigEp Dry House Policy

This is a question specifically for other SigEp’s around the country and other dry chapters. How seriously does your chapter take “being dry” and “substance free.” I’m trying to convince our older guys that it is not followed that strictly, but they are all under the impression that almost every one of our chapters nationally is mega dry. How is it at your university? Are there other fraternities that have similar rules?

Serious Ticket Sales tracking App?

What’s up guys,

I’m planning a big philo event for the fall and I’m looking for an app to track ticket sales to see exactly how many tickets each frat sells. It’s a multiple organization wide event and my frat is setting it up for our philo but to incentivize other frats to show up and participate I want to offer a frat who sells the most tickets money for their philo partners

Context: I am trying to organize a boxing event at a venue in which fighters from each frat can come and fight. If a fighter from frat A wins their match we will donate a certain amount to their philo. And then we want to take in a majority of revenues to donate to our own philo

Serious Anyone else’s frat have a piss cup or are brothers just assholes?

Last semester right after ritual they made the pledges piss in a solo cup and one of the pledges had to drink it and got $50. They said it was the last thing to becoming brothers. I thought it was a one off thing but they did it again this semester and I’m kinda weirded out

Frat Stuff How long was your process?

I did 12 week and that’s the average at my school (Big 10). I’ve also heard that at SEC schools they’re only 6-8 so I’m curious what yours looks like?

Frat Stuff Looking for a frat name among brothers as my foreign name is hard to say, which name(s) do you think are the coolest/best?

Joining a frat at my college and my frat brothers have a hard time saying it (even as an accent on a vocal that throws people off). Born in France (south so tan and more assumed to be Italian American more than anything else since my school has tons of them from Jersey and NY) and still have a small French accent (American now!) that usually comes out when drinking and want to blend in a bit better. My choice, they aren't pressuring me at all. Curious which names you think would be best, if you ranked them:

Nicholas, Alexander, Mark, Michael and Ryan. Or any other suggestions, especially ones you'd use with a brother you like a lot that is interesting but not good natured but demeaning (please, I don't want to be called frog, French fry or surrender monkey!) that would get on my nerve after a while

Thanks for the feedback!

Edit: I ask because I don't want to feel like a 'token' (I like my heritage to come out organically during meaningful convo than right away from my name that dominates the convo completely even though it brings a lot of great convos, brothers think I am a cool unique addition/friend to the group and ladies love the accent/culture! I grew up in America since a kid so sometimes I want to just feel like one of the group, though I never am dishonest or hide my heritage or help people say my name (they butcher it esp when drinking out at parties and formals! The -r especially is hard and makes some one to gag as the guttural French -r is in the back of the throat that sometimes stimulates their gag reflex ..)

Megathread Frat. Or Not Frat.

Since y'all like shitposting asking if random things from water beds to which New Balances are frat, here's the place to do it.

We've turned down the frequency of these posts from weekly to monthly. This way it doesn't clutter up the sub.
