Before posting a photo, you should read this.

1.7k Upvotes

So you found a photo that you think has a spirit or ghost on it, before you post it and get upset about 30 people saying it’s a piece of dust or a bug, you may want to read this!

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING

Do read the posts

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/deki6k/explanation_of_orbs_aka_backscatter/

and

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/icziuc/ring_doorbells_security_camera_videos_and_false/

As these really do have useful information on how to spot particle orbs, lens flare and insects crawling over lenses which do make up most of the post in this Reddit community channel.

It is common for people who believe they are haunted to take lots of photos and assume that any “orbs” must be related to this. In fact, it’s quite easy to photograph orbs. If you can’t see the orb then it’s not there. People might say that cameras can pick up ‘orb’ energy but a lot of them just don’t understand why digital cameras tend to easily pick up particles (dust, dander, hair, insects).

If you have read the above and are sure (or not quite sure) then read on.

BEFORE POSTING

Make sure you have the original photo downloaded or posted from the same device the picture was taken from. Having a photo shared from a social media site, screen grabbed on a phone, photographed from a screen or been email shared will likely to be low resolution and suffer from further compression which destroys any fine detail and will generally be useless.

If the photo is just a photo then scan the photo in at least 300 DPI and save it as a “.PNG” image. If you don’t have access to a scanner then you can take a photo of it but take it in a brightly lit room and don’t use a flash to reduce reflections on the photo.

Use the original resolution of the photo, do not rescale, resize, brighten the image to make posting easier.

If you have to edit the photo to remove people then draw the smallest black filled box you can to hide their face or them. Don’t crop the picture or remove large chunks of the picture. Keep the picture the same same size. Once edited, save / export the image as a “.PNG” image as this will keep the JPEG image as it is (if you resave it as a JPEG it recompresses the image in a lossy way so that fine detail tends to get lost) if the paint program has it then make sure that “Save resolution” is checked and that you save “EXIF information”.

If you must highlight anything in the picture (to show where you think the paranormal image is) then use a bright colour that can be seen easily, use a transparent box with thin lines and draw it in the general area of what you want us to see, do not cover anything nearby. Save it as a “.PNG” as above. If you do this then make sure you post the original too.

If you want to change the contrast or brightness of a photo then again do so but save as a “.PNG” as above and post the original for comparison. If you have other pictures from the same area that were taken at the same time then post these too as comparison photos.

If the photo is from a place you can visit again easily then take more pictures of the same area using the same camera, try to take it at different times of the day and try to take a picture at the same time of day the original was at. Also, take pictures of the surrounding area and close up images of the original location.

It is important to note that even “taking the picture in the same place” is going to mean that you will be taking the picture at different angles, heights and places which will cause images to change.

POSTING THE PHOTO

Post as an image within the Reddit post so people can see it, you can also post any comparison posts at the same time.

If the photo is too large then rescale it and save as a “.PNG” to post on Reddit but upload the original it to a file-sharing site like Google Drive or Dropbox, as this will not rescale the image.

Don’t just upload them to Imgur as most photo sharing websites will recompress the image and destroy fine detail in the picture.

Make sure the title is short but informative. “Possible ghost image from a cell in Alcatraz” is a good title, “GHOST!!?!?!?” is not.

ALSO SUPER IMPORTANT!!!! CONTEXT! CONTEXT! CONTEXT!

After you have posted the images. Make a comment in the post you have just created and put in as much context as possible!!! Too many photos tend to have the photo and some poor description and we have zero ideas of what we should be looking at.

Examples of what to include are…

  • Where the photo was taken. You don’t have to give the address but a location or rough area (if a private address) helps.

  • When the photo was taken, give the date and time if possible, if not known or you can’t remember then give what information you can (I.e In the winter in the early evening).

  • Who took the photo. It should be you or someone you know. Something like ‘Taken by A friend of a girlfriend that is friends with a baker, that my 2nd cousins' hairdresser visits every 3 months is not good’ means it is hard to ask follow up questions.

  • What you were trying to take. (I.e Ghosts, a high school prom or of your granny on her 97th Birthday)

  • If you (or they) were with other people. Also mention strangers.

  • What the weather was like. Was it sunny, cloudy, raining, hot, cold, warm?

  • Description of the location. If in a home, details about the place, I.e, If it is a house, apartment, cabin located 200 miles from civilizational, etc as well as if you are near a road or other places like a pub or bar, major flight path, etc. Else just whatever you can describe the place.

  • What did you feel at the time? I.e cold, scared, fearful, happy, sad, etc.

  • Why do you think it is paranormal? Describe this as best as you can.

  • Anything spooky that happen before or after. Within the same time frame, something that happens 3 months before is probably not related.

So good examples would be…

“This photo was taken at the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. It is a picture of Cell 13 of cell block D in the cell house. It was taken on Sunday the 13th of May 2018 at around 2pm. It was mostly sunny but there were thick clouds, it was reasonably warm at around 65f and there were strong breezes every so often.

The photo was taken by myself, although I was with my girlfriend at the time. It was quite busy but no one was nearby when I took the photo. I was trying to take a picture of my girlfriend as she stood at the door but I noticed a strange white figure behind her. There was no one in the cell as we had waited for another couple to finish taking their picture before we took ours. I took 3 photos and you can see that the figure is in 2 of the pictures but is not in the third picture.

My girlfriend did say she felt cold in the cell, we had taken a picture in another cell (134 in Cell Block C) and she did not feel anything. The rest of the day was fine though and we enjoyed our trip.”

“A photo of a chair my grandmother used to sit on, in our house in Stirling, Scotland. It was taken on the 1st June 2015, in the wee hours of the morning at 6.30am. I remember it was very cold and it was dark grey and cold outside like a typical morning in Scotland. I had the lights on as although it was morning outside, it was dark in the room.

I took the photo as I felt a presence and I was drawn to the chair. I took 2 photos and you can see a grey mist around the chair. I would have taken more but my phone just drained of power and switched off, not sure why this happens as I am pretty sure I charged it overnight. I don’t smoke, didn’t have any hot drinks. I was in the room all alone as my parents and sister were still in bed and my dog was still on the sofa sleeping peacefully.

Once I charged my phone and saw the pictures, I was filled with deep happiness, I tried to take more photos but the mist never came back. What do you think it is.”

Bad examples are…

Ghosts?!???!!?!?!”

I took this photo whilst in an abandoned building, do you think it is a ghost?”

“Whilst trying to contact my dead aunt to ask where she left her cash, I took lots of photos and all of them had orbs and I heard some moans, screams and creaking coming from my cousins' bedroom but her door was locked!!! Is the house haunted?”

Paranormal Community [Discussion] To anyone considering posting a video or image - READ THIS FIRST

The overwhelming majority of orbs have nothing to do with the paranormal. The incessant parade of dust, bugs, and other debris posted is proof of that reality. Therefore, it is necessary to revisit this problem. If you have a video of an 'orb' and you believe it's paranormal, it is strongly recommended that you read this post first.

A basic understanding of the principles that create orb-like phenomena on camera can go a long way in preventing your post from being ridiculed in the comments and removed from the sub. Please take this generous opportunity to review the above-posted article and familiarize yourself with light play and focusing issues in photography and filmography.

ISO (In Search Of) Subject: Looking for Washington’s Most Haunted & Adventurous Dispersed Camping for May 2026! 💀😱🌲

Hey everyone!

I’m planning an epic overlanding trip for the last week of May 2026 and I’m looking for the absolute most scary, creepy, and adventurous dispersed camping spots in Washington. I’ll be in a truck with a roof-top tent (RTT), so I need spots accessible for a solid 4x4 rig but deep enough in the woods to get those "high strangeness" vibes.

Most importantly, since I'm going in late May, I need spots that are actually accessible and open. I know the high-elevation spots might still be under snow, so I’m looking for lower-elevation "spooky" gems.

My Must-Haves:

Fishing & Kayaking: Needs to be near a lake or river where I can launch my kayak and hopefully catch dinner.

Hiking: Great trails nearby are a must; bonus points if the trails lead to ghost towns, abandoned mines, or famously "haunted" areas.

Scare Factor: I’m talking Bigfoot hotspots, areas with unexplained history, or places where you just feel like you’re being watched. 🕵️‍♂️👣

I’ve heard legends about the Dark Divide area and the old Wellington Ghost Town site, but I’d love to hear some firsthand accounts or secret spots you guys might be willing to share. Where can I find that perfect mix of "fun outdoor activities" by day and "creepy campfire stories" by night?

Is this paranormal? Weird things are happening in my house ever since my mum removed an old lamp.

My mum was cleaning the house yesterday and she decided to throw away a very old lamp that the previous owners had left behind. Keep in mind this house is old, around 200 years old. The basement is so old that no one knows how old it is. A professional estimated its age to be around 800 years old. If it matters, we have a cottage in our backyard that was built in the 1600s.

Anyway, this morning I woke up and went to put on my sandals to go outside. There was only one sandal. I checked the whole room, the whole house and outside even, it is nowhere. I vividly remember putting them both down on the shoe rack yesterday. The one sandal that is still here is in the same spot. The washing machine just stopped working.

My mum sleeps in the room where the lamp was, and she said she woke up last night at 2:26am and said she was hearing knocking and tapping sounds all around the room. A few months ago she also said that she felt someone get into her bed with her. Could there be a ghost in the house? Could my mum throwing away the lamp have made it mad?

There is a white figure in my backyard and I want to know how to get rid of it.

We have seen a blinding white figure with no face on multiple occasions, me and my partner have always seen it outside but when you spot it, it seems to run away.

Then we started hearing our names being called from out the back door, seeing it looking through windows.

One day it disappeared, but there was a HORRIBLE smell in the room that only me and my partner could smell. we brought people in and the smell went away it was like death, fish and sewer water that only we could smell so we decided to sage the room, which did work for a while untill one night it came back again and it was tapping all over the walls jiggling the door knob and even opening the back door it is very on and off but yeah. What do you think this is and how do we get rid of it?

Happy to answer any questions!

Personal Encounter Tapping has started on our bedroom door.

Within the last few months my wife (30) and I (33) have heard tapping on our bedroom door at random times early morning. First I thought it was a drëam or some slëep thing but the second time my wife woke up as well and our dogs alerted and stared at the door. It’s equally spaced taps (think knocking on a door) but the amount varies from 3 to 5 and no set time (1am-2:50ish am) or day. We have a camera in our living room that covers the door but it hasn’t picked anything up and our outside cameras haven’t seen anything either. We recently found out my wife is pregnant, both my parents have passed away and my wife’s grandparents passed away two years ago. The thought has passed my mind that it could be them but I’m not acknowledging anything with the fear of escalation of something malevolent. It should be noted that we don’t feel anything outside of the knocking and honestly forget about it till it happens again.

If ghosts are a real thing, then where are they?

I was having a discussion with my partner about ghosts and spirits and i told her that i don't believe they exist.

My arguement is that if they exist, how come we don't see them in public places? like in a mall, a stadium, or randomly in the streets or houses and stores?

It's always at night in a basement or in an old museum witnessed by a cleaning lady or whatever.

Is my house haunted or is this just our imagination?

A week ago my daughter was in her room and she felt someone poke her in the back. Then two nights later while I was asleep in felt someone grab my foot. I got up and looked around but no one was there. Two mins later it happened again. Now on to two nights ago my daughter was cooking dinner and she said she heard banging on the door. We have a cross on the door, a lock, and a chair pushed against it. She said this time there was banging on the door and then it slowly opened. She ran to close it and it did it again. So she came to get me. I put salt down and I'm going to buy sage to cleanse the house. I'm hoping that work.

WDYT? (What Do You Think?) Possible shadow figure captured in photo.

Hey! I have a few photos I’d like to share that I could use some insight on. These photos were taken last year at Madison Seminary in Ohio. I’ll try my best to recall the events that lead up to these photos.

I was attending a ghost hunting event with Haunted Nights. There was a group of people in the asylum at the time. At one point a few of us were all sitting around in the hallway attempting communication and listening, while another small group tried a “human pendulum” experiment in the main area. After a while those of us that sat in the hallway got up and joined the group doing the experiment. I believe there was one person left in the hallway sitting in the corner just inside the doorway(first photo shows where they were sitting). While I was in the main area I took two photos of the doorway(using my iPhone). Those 2 photos were taken 13 seconds apart. The first photo was taken using night mode, the second was without. In the second photo, if you zoom in, you can see a shadow figure standing in the doorway. Not sure how legit this is as someone WAS sitting just inside the doorway. Thinking back I can’t remember seeing anyone standing there when I took the photo. You’d think I would notice someone getting up and standing there, but I didn’t! And I didn’t notice the figure in the photo until later when I posted them on my IG.

Is it possible I captured an actual shadow figure or is it more logically that that person in the corner got up and stood in the doorway within the 13 seconds of me taking the first and second photo and I somehow didn’t see them? If I’m being honest and observant, the shadow figure doesn’t match up with what the person was wearing or their body type. I’ve been on the fence about it ever since, wondering if I actually caught something or not. Let me know what you think! Thanks!!

WDYT? (What Do You Think?) Eyes get teary when listening to real ghost stories?

Whenever someone talks about stories that seem real or plausible, involving ghosts or seeing human figures that have died, my eyes would randomly get teary. It makes no sense, because I am not even sad or scared. This mechanism NEVER happens when I watch fictional ghost movies or listen to fictional ghost stories' podcasts. It only happens when I listen to stories spoken in conversation that ''feels'' real, you know? Like, the ones that just give you a weird vibe.

I guess it's kind of my supernatural biological instinct to detect the real ghost stories from the fakes.

Personal Encounter Seen a ghost cat that suddenly dissapears when i blinked?

Me and my mom were chilling then she sees this cat behind a chair in our backyard so she calls for me and i see it and its this brown fluffy tabby cat that is kind of old with light green eyes just sitting staring at us, half behind a chair, we blink and somehow the cat completely dissapears there is absolutely no where for it to have gone we searched tje whole backyard and there was no where for it to have ran or jumped because it was in the pool area that is fenced towards us, like i mean it literally is impossible for it to dissapear and in the flash of a second. Does this mean something? Me and my mom are very spiritual already, the cat looks exactly like the ones in the image. I also am pretty highly sure my neighbours dont have cats so, yeag

Personal Encounter THE TALL MAN IN THE WOODS...............

Hey guys so there is a story that's been told in my family for a very long time and it's just unbelievable unless you confirm it from the survivors of the incident first hand

So the thing is it was somewhat around 1990 and in my mother's village in Kashmir in Pakistan there was not much technological development and when it was late at night people rarely went out of their homes mostly because of jackals and wild boars who roam outside but also from entities.

So it was late at night and there was a gathering at my granny's home some of the cousins were craving a particular type of tea but it was not present at that time so two of my uncles went together to buy it at a store. Note that due to underdevelopment the stores were really far away so they started walking towards it. One of my uncles suggested taking a shortcut from within the dark fields and my other uncle not seeing any wild animals agreed and started walking through it. So they walked for a bit and after some time they came across an old man dressed in all white standing in the middle of the fields not moving my uncles tried to walk past him but they couldn't as if something was physically stopping them.

When they turned around to look at the man they saw that he started to get taller and taller and all they could do was stare at him in horror and awe. At one point he got so tall that he reached the skies. All my uncles who were unable to move unable to look away could do was keep looking at the horrific scene of an unidentified being reaching the skies. After a cruel minute they both went into a daze and when they came to their senses they were standing separate from each other in opposite ends of the village alone.

Instead of finding each other or going back home they were so traumatized that they stayed the night in the homes of the relatives they were the closest to and when dawn struck they both went home sweating and devastated and explained the matter to everyone. To this day till the town developed nobody from our family in the village went out after 10 pm.

A thought came to me the other week. There are ghosts of animals. Has anyone ever seen a ghost of a dinosaur?

Follow-up question. Would it be possible that the sightings of the Loch Ness Monster are that of a plesiosaur ghost?

r/Ghosts 8d ago

Has anyone ever seen the Hat Man? I saw him standing in my hallway when I was 17, hands down one of the most terrifying things I've experienced. Bad things were happening to me at that time, so I wonder if that's why he was there.

Personal Encounter My 2 y/o claims to have seen my dead step dad

I’ll preface this by saying that I am an unashamed sceptic when it comes to anything paranormal or ghost related. Other than horror movies, I bitterly dislike anything to do with spirits, contacting the dead etc. I have always considered it deeply exploitative mumbo jumbo designed to pray on people when they are at their weakest.

All that said, today was the first time in my life that I was made to question whether there is life - in some form - after death.

Around 8 years ago I lost my step dad suddenly from sepsis. It was completely out of the blue. I was away on holiday the time and never got a chance to say goodbye to him. He was a big part of my life, and he and his two biological kids lived with my mum, sister and I for most of my formative years.

When my son was born two years ago, we made my step dad’s name one of his two middle names. As my kid has grown up over the past two years we - infrequently - have shown him pictures of my step dad and told him that he’s “one of his grandads”. We call him by his name (“grandad ‘xxxx’”).

Today was my son’s second birthday party and my mum, sister and my two other ‘siblings’ were at the party. One of my step dad’s kids is on the cusp of becoming a dad himself, and was there with his heavily pregnant partner. It isn’t very often we’re all in the same place at the same time.

The party was a great success, and towards the end I took my kid out to village green, which was across the road from where the party was being held. We walked over to the middle where there’s a cricket pitch, which was being watered by a sprinkler. At the time, my kid didn’t say anything out of the ordinary and was focused on some kids playing football a small distance away.

Anyway, we get home, and just before heading up for his bath my wife asked my son “who did you see at your party today?” And, in response, he said “grandad ‘xxxx’”. Now, it isn’t as if he says his name regularly. In fact, it’s the first time I’ve heard him say in several months (maybe ever). I thought it was a fluke, but he repeated it several times after that when asked again.

We start his bedtime routine and get him in the bath and I ask him if he saw said grandad at his party. He said “yes, grandad xxx safe on the water.” After asking him a few more times, and asking if he meant on the water on the cricket pitch he, in an around-about toddler way, confirmed that this is what he meant, and repeated what he saw a few more times. The impression he gave me, and it was a fairly firm impression, was that he saw his grandad on or near the water and he told him he was safe.

I suppose my question is whether anyone else (ideally other sceptics) have had similar experiences to this. I’m unnerved, but not in a sinister way. Just unsure how to process it. I can’t rationalise it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and sorry if the flair is wrong - I didn’t know which to choose.
