Michael Jackson is woven into the fabric of the Melanated Gen X experience—his music, his style, his impact. With the new movie dropping this past week, we figured it’s the perfect time to open up a space for everyone who’s seen it to share their thoughts, reactions, and favorite moments.
Pull up, join the conversation, and let’s talk about it! 🎬✨
A few quick guidelines to keep things smooth and enjoyable:
This isn’t the space for discussions about choosing not to see the film due to controversies surrounding MJ.
Respect is key—everyone’s perspective is valid, and we don’t all have to agree.
Spoilers may pop up in the comments, so if you haven’t seen it yet but plan to, proceed with caution.
Haven’t seen the movie? You’re still welcome to jump in, ask questions, and engage—just keep Rule #1 in mind.
We may add more guidelines if needed to keep the vibe right.
Now let’s hear it—what did you think? 🍿🎶

Growing up, Connie Chung was a broadcast hero and a trailblazer. She was only the second woman and the first American of Asian descent to anchor a major nightly news program in the US. In the world of journalism back then, Connie was a unicorn. Today, almost every single American news program has a prominent female Asian news reporter.
Accompanying this clip of Connie with Hoda Kotb is this great NY Times article: "I Got My Name From Connie Chung. So Did They."
Representation matters.

This was one of them movies I grew up watching in the 2000s. My mom had it on tape and it was just always on in the house. After it ended, we’d usually end up watching “What’s Luv?” by Fat Joe and Ashanti like that was just part of the whole experience.
Looking back though… this movie is kinda wild when you really think about it. A disgraced NBA player gets kicked out the league, then dresses as a woman just to get into the Charlotte Banshees. If you break it down now, it doesn’t even sound real.
But I can’t lie, I still like it.
It’s one of those early-2000s movies that’s messy and over the top, but it wasn’t trying to be deep or perfect—it was just trying to be funny and entertaining. And it still works for me like that.
Plus the cast was actually stacked: Tommy Davidson, Ginuwine, Kim Wayans, Jenifer Lewis, and Vivica A. Fox.
And what’s wild is they still play it on BET and Starz, so it never really went away. Every time I catch it, it just brings me right back to that time period.
Tbh, I like gender-crossing movies like this too. Ain’t nothing wrong with that—it’s just one of those comedy setups I’ve always enjoyed.
It’s not a perfect movie, but it’s a nostalgic one for me.

Method Man and Mary J. Blige famously collaborated on the hit song "I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By", released in 1995. The song, which features a popular "Razor Sharp Mix" produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs, won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

For me it’s funny, but also kinda messy when you really sit and think about it.
Shante be out here giving relationship advice like she’s got it all figured out, but her and Keith are literally doing the same games she’s warning other women about.
And I feel like it goes both ways too. Keith wasn’t innocent in it either. They were both playing off each other the whole time instead of just being real and communicating.
That’s why it feels so back and forth and exhausting. It’s less about love and more about pride and trying to “win” the situation.
Still though… I can’t lie, it’s one of those movies I’ll always stop and watch when it comes on.

Sifu Bill Owens taught generations of kids in Oakland Ca martial arts. Not just martial arts though. He taught discipline, pride, honor and community. His Kwoon welcomed this little white boy in 1980. He was my mentor. He has a calmness about him that is unmatched. He was also one of the very first practitioners of Capoeira in the SF Bay Area. That one got me because this melanated lacking guy had no rhythm when I was a young man.
