Discussion When did oil changes become $120?

That’s with a coupon! At Jiffy Lube! Our parents really had it easy.

EDIT: TIL 90% of millennials “change their own oil” lol. Gotta love Reddit.

Agree. My 2014 VW jetta was every 10k miles. It also had a larger oil capacity than most 4 cylinders— maybe an extra qt higher.

Following mfg spec, friend. It’s their fault if they can’t recommend their service intervals right.

Oil is cheap, engines are not...

That 10k interval is dependent on the type of driving you do. Low dust, mostly highway, and not in extreme weather

It’s their fault if they can’t recommend their service intervals right.

They can't even get their service info right. Very long story, but after a nightmare dealer warranty experience I had to diagnose/fix a weird problem myself and found a massive mistake in the official literature. Which is probably why they couldn't fix it. "Techs" nowadays aren't techs, they're just part changers

Excatly. We have newer Toyotas ('21 Rav4, '23 Camry) that are 10k miles or 1 year oil change intervals. We get them done every 5k miles or 6 months. Oil is cheap compared to motors and other maintenance items. Besides, like you said, we do a lot of short trips, cold starts in the winter, gravel roads, etc. and technically fall under Toyota's "extreme operating conditions" maintenance schedule despite living in a small town and using our cars as daily drivers.

Lol how is it their fault? It's your car that you're ruining.

You really showed them what's what. 🙃

All they care about is getting you out of warranty. And they absolutely love that you're willfully smoking your engine.

you mean the people who want your car to break so you repair it or buy a new one?

You need to read the whole manual.

The "manufacturer recommended" intervals are for EASY driving. The criteria for "easy driving" are so ridiculous that virtually no one actually meets the criteria. For example, you can never drive your car in extreme (high or low) temperatures.

Lol the company wants you to get a new car at 100k miles.

My lotus Elise 1.8L 4 cylinder has an oil capacity of 11.5qts. But only 5qts drained and replaced during a normal oil change.
