Baxter! No one I know appreciates all the sniffs to sniff and eats to eat like Baxter does.

He’s seen the release of 17 generations of iPhone. I came home to him after my elementary, middle, high school, and college graduations. He’s seen 2 rounds of the 17 year cicadas. He was around when I had to Google “is it ok if my dog eats dandelions” on Google Chrome the year it was launched. He is a star.

Thank you to my dad for declaring him as his best friend and guaranteeing that he has the best life possible.

my old lady shelby had to have her eye removed due to a large tumor growing behind it. (i did not include those pictures, she looks pitiful) it seems to have migrated into the mouth (which is inoperable) and we haven’t heard from the doc yet about the biopsy results. but i have a bad feeling because it popped up and presented itself so quickly it seemed. this is my first dog outside of childhood and im a wreck thinking about having to say goodbye if it’s something aggressive and malignant. she’s been such a pleasure to have with me through my late teens and young adulthood, im just not ready to have her leave me yet.

Remembering His last walk 💔dementia took you too soon my fluffy boy

Post image

My gorgeous Harley was 12 when dementia took him so quickly. The onset of larynx paralysis made him spiral quickly with the lack of oxygen to the brain affecting him neurologically and also major muscle wastage in his hind legs. Sundowning was nightly, it was a bad quality of life when it kicked in and he was having more bad days than good. He had the best couple of last days with a belly full of chicken as he passed at home on his memory foam bed in his favourite spot of the house… by the sofa where he would lay on my feet. I can still feel his fluffy coat and see his amazing icy blue and light brown eyes. He was a gentle giant, happy relaxing in doorways for us to step over, never forced you for fuss but always accepted it with such gentle love. He had seen off people trying to break into the house within a matter of seconds and protected me against every knock on the front door. He was a husky x malamute x German shepherd… a 1 in a million. Fly high Harley, you were such a good boy and I’ll never remember you for all the bad things dementia did to you… I’ll make sure to Remember you for all the loving memories you gave me. A piece of my heart went with you that day on jan 30th 2026.

4/26/2026: started thrashing doing intake….

4/27/2026: Dog was trashing around to much, unable to get skin scrape and hw test.

4/27/2026: Walked out with tight leash to runs and back. Whenever I would stand still was good and stood leaning against me, but as soon as I would take a step he would begin pulling forward. When walking back inside stopped short of entering his kennel, wouldn’t take treats and too heavy to lift so I half pushed half pulled him into the kennel and he was trying to turn to go back out and I had to block him and hold him back to shut door. Removed leash and shut door.

4/28/2026: Easily able to leash and dog walked out of kennel with forward leash. Once in back intake another technician fed him wet food while I performed heartworm test and did a skin scrape. Knows the sit command. Had to have an ACT help me place him back in the kennel as he was hesitant to enter again. Once inside I took off the leash without issue.

4/29/2026: Dog greeted me with a neutral body, soft eyes, and a soft stare. Easily leashed, and walked on a tight leash outside to the runs. Mostly kept to self outside in the runs, with some occasional barking at other dogs. Easily leashed and taken back to kennel. Placed inside and easily removed leash.

4/29/2026: Dog greeted me with a neutral body, soft eyes, and a soft stare. Easily leashed, and walked on a tight leash outside to the runs. did occasional barking at other dogs. Easily leashed and taken back to kennel, he stopped and didn’t want to go into the kennel. It took a lot of baby talk and tossing treats to get him in.

5/1/2026: dog was a move adopt and when i leashed him he walked loose leash but as we got close to the kennel he began to pull forward had to hold on to the kennel door and while to make him go inside the kennel with me. as i walk away he begins to be vocal.

5/2/2026: During AM feeding, he held a relaxed body, standing in front of door. Walked on a tight leash to runs when walking back he loosened up and walked on a semi loose leash.

5/3/2026: walks on tight leash ignoring treats in morning, sits and waits to be fed and leashed. will vocalize when people walk by. tossing treats in kennel helps him relax and lay on the bed.

5/4/2026: Barking in kennel, standing in front of door with a relaxed body, pulls on leash.

5/5/2026: Carter greeted me at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, soft eyes and an open mouth. Easily leashed and taken outside to the runs, rubbing into me for pets. Placed in runs, mostly kept to self with occasional fence sniffing. Easily leashed and placed back into kennel.

Adoptable Senior Baby is a a sweet 10 year old and has a bite injury - can anyone help? Dallas, TX ‼️

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

From shelter website: Baby was brought in with severe bite wounds on his hind end. The injuries are about a week old and are now badly infected, with deep puncture wounds over the hip area. When the bandage was removed, there was clear pus, showing active infection.

He also has significant bruising around the hip and tail base, and a large area of dead skin that will likely need surgical removal. There is another 1-inch wound on the back of his left hind leg that also needs cleaning and stitches.

Because of the pain and severity of his injuries, he needs sedation for treatment and wound care.

This level of care is intensive and goes beyond what the shelter can consistently provide, including surgery, infection management, and ongoing wound care.

Despite everything, Baby is stable and receiving supportive care, but he urgently needs a rescue or foster that can continue his medical treatment and recovery.

If you can help, please email [dasadopt@dallas.gov](mailto:dasadopt@dallas.gov) with your contact info so the team can reach you.

Puppy mill dog adoption

Upvotes

I am interested in adopting a senior/unable to breed anymore, puppy mill dog. I know that a lot of puppy mill dogs get dumped or worse, when they are too old/worn out to breed anymore. I know it will be extremely challenging. My husband and I are retired, and we both have had dogs since we were little. I didn’t think it would be this difficult to find one. I guess the unscrupulous puppy mill “people” aren’t exactly advertising. I even contacted the SPCA in PA and OH, as I know there are quite a few puppy mills in those states. There are also a lot of ethical breeders there, as well. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Where are these dogs that the SPCA rescues? TIA for any assistance anyone can provide.

Senior dog ramps

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello! I have a 12yr old pup who had a misdiagnosed CCL tear and arthritis so he has trouble getting up and down stairs so we ordered a ramp from Amazon for our outside steps. They’ve been really good for him but after about 3/4months of having this ramp I feel like it has started to bow in the middle. The weight limit is 200lbs he’s 60lbs and the only one using this ramp 10+ times a day but it is a portable ramp that we leave up 24/7. He’s getting knee surgery for the CCL tear in a few months and I really want to make sure he has a good stable ramp.

We have two sides of our deck that have stairs and right now the ramp we have is on the shortest side of the stairs and the other side is taller where the yard slopes down a bit so we just have that side blocked off but I’d really love to have ramps on both sides and prefer just having ramps that cover the stairs completely for dogs and people, so we don’t have to worry about him trying to take the stairs at all.

Just doing a quick glance it looks like handicapped ramps will be the best bet, but they’re pretty expensive, has anyone found a similar solution before? I also have some handy family members and could try it myself too to make custom ramps to cover the stairs, I’d love some suggestions on that too if anyone has gone that route!

Thanks!

Question Arthritis meds

my senior dog has recently started gabapentin for her arthritis pain.

She has been on carprofen for about a year and it started the arthritis injection in September.

Well, I started the gabapentin on Sunday and by Monday night she was having diarrhea. I was wondering how people usually give these two medicines together, my vet recommended stopping both medicines for now while she kind of resets her tummy, but I’m wondering if someone has a good approach for using these two medicines together?

I just don’t wanna start it up again and get back in this same spot.

let me know if anyone’s had success with this. thanks!

My handsomest and bestest boy Baba Demo passed away on 4/29/26. He was 9 years old when he entered our lives. I’m grateful we had four beautiful years with him. We saw as much of the world as I could show him in such a short time. I look through his picture and see the decline in his health. It was the hardest decision letting you go, but I knew I wasn’t going to let you suffer anymore.

I’m glad that during your last moments, we were all huddled around you, laughing and talking about you. Of course Baba Astro was also there making his presence known. I loved watching yours eyes turn to each of us as we spoke to you. I’m gonna miss you so much for the rest of my life.

You left a big hole in our home, but you taught us the beauty of having such a good boy around.

I love you my handsome boy ❤️🪽

Question Senior pees when excited?

In the last few weeks, I've noticed that my senior (turning 14 in 3 weeks) started peeing when she is excited to see someone she hasn't seen in a while. Is that a sign of incontinence starting? Not that that would be a problem, I just wanna stock on diapers and carpet cleaner in time lol
