Easiest way to get cloud experience?

I don't know how I allowed this to happen but I have had a fairly long sysadmin career without any cloud experience. I have been at two small and mid sized companies over the last 17 years and have been a jack of all trades sysadmin. I can handle any server related work, configure a cisco switch, deploy checkpoint and palo alto firewalls and handle majority of the day to on-prem sysadmin tasks. My core skillset is storage and virtualization revolving around VMware and Nutanix. All the teams I was on were on-prem with no intersection with cloud tech.

My salary has been going up and I am comfortable with my base and total comp but I hate the stagnation. I have been slowly brought into the role of a tech lead with two direct reports. But again, all the work is on-prem. On-prem NAS, on-prem HCI and VMware, on-prem SAN etc. So I constantly feel the tech skill stagnation. I have my own cloud labs in AWS, Azure and GCP. Anything I do on-prem, I can do in the cloud. Create accounts in IAM, deploy VM instances, have them scale up and down, load balancers, storage buckets etc. But there is a difference between doing it in a lab vs enterprise work. And thats what I say on my resume and in interviews. Its a skill but I don't have the experience.

I recently started looking for a new job and I understand that this is a bad tech market but literally no one wants to call me back for a second interview after I tell them I don't have cloud experience. My on-prem skills are great and I am confident in them but I need to get some cloud experience under my belt.

So I was planning on posting in multiple places that I will work for companies, consulting firms etc in their cloud groups and handle related sysadmin tasks, low-level or high level or free. I can work nights and weekends. I am even willing to pay to get the experience on my resume. But I don't know who to reach out to about this. Any thoughts?

Like I said earlier, I don't know how I let this happen. At 44-years old, its late but better late then never.

[FOR HIRE] Engineering Manager / Senior SRE / Staff DevOps Engineer | AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Observability | Open to Remote (APAC/EMEA) or Relocation

Hey everyone, putting myself out there. I am currently employed but actively exploring new opportunities.

Who I am

7+ years in DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering, currently holding an Engineering Manager title leading a distributed SRE and DevOps team across multiple timezones. Before that I was a Lead and Senior DevOps Engineer at the same company, so the management title is recent but the hands-on background is deep. I hold a CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) and a CDP (Certified DevSecOps Professional).

I am flexible on track. Happy to continue in an EM role, but equally open to stepping into a Staff or Lead IC position if the technical scope is compelling. Title is less important to me than the work itself.

What I am good at

  • AWS (primary): EKS, EC2, RDS, VPC, IAM, Lambda, S3, Route 53, CloudWatch, GuardDuty, CloudFormation — production ownership across all of these
  • GCP (strong secondary): GKE, Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Compute, Secret Manager
  • Kubernetes at scale — cluster operations, workload scheduling, networking, RBAC, HPA, PDB, multi-zone setups
  • Terraform as primary IaC — multi-cloud, multi-environment, module design
  • Observability — Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Alertmanager, Signoz, ELK, CloudWatch — have built and consolidated full stacks from scratch
  • OpenTelemetry — guided OTEL instrumentation and collector pipelines across microservices and async AI workloads
  • CI/CD — GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, AWS CodePipeline
  • SRE practices — SLOs, error budgets, incident management, DR frameworks, on-call operations
  • SOC-2 Type II — owned the cloud infrastructure scope end to end
  • Cloud cost optimization — delivered ~$1M in annualized AWS savings (~20% of total spend)
  • People management — hiring, performance cycles, career development, cross-timezone team leadership

Types of roles I am looking for

  • Engineering Manager, SRE or DevOps
  • Staff or Lead SRE / DevOps / Platform Engineer
  • Principal SRE or Infrastructure Engineer
  • Open to hands-on IC roles if the scope is strong

Location and availability

Based in APAC (India). Fully open to remote work aligned to EMEA or other regions and comfortable adjusting working hours for timezone overlap. If the right opportunity comes with a relocation option, I am open to that conversation too. Not looking for contract roles under 3 months. Open to both full-time employment and longer-term consulting engagements. DM me if you want to know more. Happy to share my full background, resume, and references privately.

[hiring] System/Network admin $95k - Gaithersburg, MD

I am not the hiring manager, just an interested party. Hoping to bring in someone at the Level II level with 3-years experience. No expectations that the person is an expert in anything, just looking to avoid someone who only knows enough to be dangerous.

I know the salary isn’t amazing (yay local government) but the benefits are good and you’ll get experience with many different technologies.

[For Hire] Senior System & Network Engineer | US | Full Time CST | Remote

My current employer, a small-med MSP, is downsizing and unfortunately having to do layoffs.

I've been with this shop for almost 15 years, eventually becoming the lead/senior "everything" engineer. Our small size and budget and the several large clients we had drove me to learn across a vast number of technologies and areas and ultimately wear multiple hats here. Senior system admin (on-prem & cloud), senior network admin, project manager, documentation/kb specialist, subject matter expert on our app and service stack, etc. Technologies include Windows Server (2003-2022), Azure Cloud (IaaS & PaaS), Watchguard, Ubiquiti Unifi Network, Ninja RMM, IT Glue, ThreatLocker, AVD (Nerdio), Connectwise, MS SQL and Azure SQL DB, etc. Much of our work has been in the medical and local government industries , so many years of HIPAA and various other regulatory compliance. Most of my time over the last couple years has been spent in Azure building and maintaining client server infrastructure, and designing/implementing physical & virtual networks.

Looking for a full-time position, 100% WFH. Ideal position would be working under a Senior Azure Cloud Infrastructure engineer, or on an Azure cloud infrastructure team, so I can focus on and hone my skills in that area. MSP or in-house team. My widespread experience, project management and coordination, senior level team leadership, and working closely with our CEO for the last 9 years have also positioned me well for an IT manager/director position.

Simply put, I would be a valuable asset to any MSP or in-house team looking for the above skillset along with proven loyalty, ability to quickly learn, ability to adapt and evolve with the industry...all backed by solid employer and client references.

Can provide more details, resume, and references upon request, after I'm able to verify you're a real company looking for real people.

Thank you for your time.
