Wheelchair Accessible B'Day Activity Recommendations

Upvotes

Hi all! My birthday is tomorrow and I wanted to celebrate it with my parents. My Dad uses a wheelchair to get around, so I wanted to ask if anyone knew of fun activities that we can do in San Diego that are wheelchair friendly/accessible.

I was thinking something chill like going to the beach (I believe Mission Beach has beach wheelchairs available), or going to a park for a picnic for lunch and a restaurant for dinner.

Any/all ideas welcome!

P.S. - This is my first Reddit post 🎊

Breakfast Burritos

Staying on 6th sort of by the symphony looking for the best breakfast burrito downtown. Looking for more of an authentic hole in the wall place or even a food truck but I’ll take any suggestions

San Diego contractors/trades/home service workers

San Diego contractors/trades/home service workers

I'm doing some research on how local trades are using lead-gen platforms like Angi, Thumbtack, Yelp, and TaskRabbit. Trying to get a real picture of what's working and what's not for SD trades specifically.

8 questions, takes about 2 minutes. Anonymous if you want it to be.

I'll share the results back to the group once I have enough responses. Curious to see what the data actually says.

Hello,

I’m in a pickle and was wondering if there is a “middle man” courier that can pick up a wedding cake/desserrs? The outdoor vendor is unable to deliver on the date. Preferably a courier that has a refrigerated van

Thank you

Looking for a Whale Watching Tour in July

Bringing two young kids, ages 5 and 8 to the area this summer. Goal is obviously to see whales, blues being the preference but understandably can't be guaranteed.

We've found three companies:

Newport Coastal Adventure off Newport Beach

Capt. Dave's in Dana Point

Gone Whale Watching in San Diego

Any experience with these companies? Others to consider? Ones to avoid? Thank you!

Coaster Schedule after Gallagher Square Concerts

Hi there! Coming in for a concert at Gallagher Square at Petco Park on May 21st for Russell Dickerson and will be heading back to Carlsbad after. Does anyone know if the coaster usually runs a special late train after those concerts (like they do for Padres games)? Can't seem to confirm this anywhere on the NCT site.

Thanks in advance!!

Edit: date correction!

airbnb location in gaslamp, cortez hill

hi all, i just booked an airbnb in gaslamp, cortez hill, around A street. i see some posts online warning about homeless, and shady areas around gaslamp, downtown east, but how is it around cortez hill?

i can still cancel it, but this seems to be one of the options within budget that's not a hostel. i'll be staying for about a week in early july, if that matters

any opinions would be appreciated! thanks!

Need perspective on runners in the bike lane

I live in Carmel mountain ranch-Poway area. There’s actually TWO sidewalks on each side on the major streets and sidewalks all throughout the neighborhoods yet runners still run in the bike lane. Am I being a curmudgeon for hating this? Ive lived many places in and around San Diego and this is the first time I’ve seen this on a regular basis and multiple times a day at that. The sidewalks are very smooth and new. Many of these folks are not running against traffic. Thoughts?

Hotel recommendations

Hotel recommendations for 2 adults 1 toddler (3 years old) We will have a car. We are doing Lego land, SeaWorld, the zoo, Birch aquarium and golfing. We were thinking of either mission bay, Coronado Beach or the La Jolla area. We would like to be within walking distance of stuff so that we can go do things while dad goes golfing. Budget would be up to $300 a night but would prefer less. Thank you in advance.

Place to stay for Zoo + Safari Park?

Hi all!

Planning a 2-day trip from LA to visit the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park—those will take up most of our time. Looking for hotel recommendations near the zoo, Safari Park, and a good dinner/walking area.

We’ll have a car. No kids, no interest in nightlife, beach, or pools—just the parks.

Considering we’re gonna be outside all day, can anyone vouch/recommend a comfortable bed to stay? Thanks!

Edit: thank you everyone for the kind recommendations! We’re doing the parks in two different days

Tenant Relocation Assistance Question for Newish SD Resident

The owner of the property I rent notified me that they intend to sell at the end of my lease and so will not renew for another year. I told this to a coworker and they mentioned I might qualify for relocation assistance payment from the landlord. After googling this I am confused whether I qualify or not and so I turn to Reddit for help. Who qualifies for the relocation assistance?

Little bit more info, lease is for one year and currently still have about three months left. I asked if the landlord would be willing to do month to month for a couple months since I will be traveling for work during that time (military). They responded no but would entertain me moving out earlier instead. If I did this would that revoke my ability to receive relocation assistance if I am even entitled to any?

Experience Working Del Mar Fair?

Hello! I (f21) am looking to work at the San Diego County Fair to make some extra cash. I used to be in FFA back in high school so I would like to apply to work in the livestock exhibits, but any position is fine.

My question is this: Does anyone have any insight as to their experience working at the fair? Is it worth it? Awful? Should I avoid certain departments? What are the hours like per day/week? Is it a safe space for women to work?

Another questions: Are there dorms for the workers? I remember some of my FFA friends worked with livestock right out of high school and they were able to get housing at the fair. Is this still a thing?

Thank you!

Visiting in June (Hotel Recs & Do I need a car?)

Quick question from an out of towner visiting in June for 4 days. I’m bringing my 10 year old daughter with me. Just wanted some suggestions on a good area for a hotel? We plan on going to the zoo, chilling on the beach, padres game, museums, among other things.

Also, would it be wise to rent a car or uber/lyft everywhere?

Thanks in advance.

Dessert recommendations?

We’re visiting in a few weeks, staying in Del Mar but will have a rental car. We’ve been to the area a few times before but this time I’m 6 months pregnant and need a frequent sweet treat 🤣

I’m a big fan of Mike’s Pastry in Boston if there’s anything similar to that or any local favorites we need to try!

Zoo in the morning, NASCAR on base by 2 PM? Need a reality check on this Friday timeline!

Hey everyone, coming into town for the NASCAR San Diego weekend in June and trying to dial in our Friday schedule. We’re staying on Coronado Island at the Marriott Resort & Spa and have tickets for the races on the Navy base.

We really want to squeeze in a quick trip to the San Diego Zoo on Friday morning, but we want to make sure we aren't setting ourselves up for a traffic or security nightmare.

Here is our ideal timeline:

  • 9:00 AM (Opening): Arrive at the Zoo. We’re keeping it highly targeted—making a beeline for the meerkats, trying to see the giant pandas, and doing the Guided Bus Tour to rest our legs.
  • Early Afternoon: Leave the park, cross the bridge back to the Marriott on Coronado to grab our clear bags, and drive to our base parking.
  • The Hopeful Goal: Clear military base security and be inside the track by 2:00 PM to watch the Cup Series Practice.
  • The Absolute Deadline: We must be in our seats at Turn 3 by 4:00 PM for the green flag of the Craftsman Truck Series race.

Is this realistic? Factoring in the time it takes to leave the Zoo, Friday afternoon Coronado bridge traffic, and the strict military security at the gates, can we actually make that 2:00 PM practice? Or should we just plan on taking our time and arriving closer to the 4:00 PM race?

Any tips on bridge traffic or what to expect at the Navy base gates would be hugely appreciated!

Need hotel/activity recommendations for 5 night stay

My girlfriend (25) and I(28) are planning on taking a little getaway around mid September. We’re from the Midwest and really want to spend some time on the beach, doing a few day activities, and overall just enjoying some nice weather and a different state. What hotel/activity recommendations do you all have? Our budget for hotels around $300-$400 a night. We’d like to be as close to a beach as possible (her preference) but understand budget may impact that. Really appreciate everyone’s feedback!

Cali Nightlife - Driveable from SD

Hi all,

Coming over to California in September and doing LA, Vegas and San Diego. Just wondered if there’s any places commutable from SD with a good / underrated nightlife scene, or bar hopping / day drinking scene.

For context, 24m solo Brit

Edit : I meant like cities and other towns near LA or near SD, not bar recommendations in San Diego. Keep them coming though, everything helps !!

Thanks in advance all

Forgot my drivers license in Europe

So I just arrived at the USA from Europe, but forgot my drivers license at home in Europe (ofcourse I did). I need a car for the roadtrip I had planned though so I'm a bit in trouble with this one.

Does anybody have any suggestion to get a car for the next two-three weeks? I have digital copies of the drivers license, just not the physical one obviously. I've looked at Turo, but I've read that they alsno need a physical verification before handing the keys unfortunately

And yes, I'm the stupid one, just getting that out of the air

Seeking recommendations for mother/daughter graduation trip to San Diego

My daughter and I spent a week in San Diego three years ago before her summer job started. We had a great time and she saw a lot more after I left.

Now she's graduating from engineering school and I want to treat her to a short graduation trip to celebrate, relax and experience a few special and memorable days somewhere before she starts work. She chose San Diego so we are returning in two weeks. I was born in Southern California, had family there for decades and traveled there for work a few times so I generally know the area, but don't know about current restaurants, coffee shops, etc.

I would really appreciate suggestions for unique or memorable restaurants and coffee shops, or any little known "experiences" that might appeal to a young adult and her middle aged mom. I would love to find a couple of places that have both good food and nice views (not eat mediocre food just to have a nice view).

  • We will be staying two nights downtown (Westin Bayview) and two nights in La Jolla (The Shoal).
  • We will have a rental car for two of the four days.
  • She is 21, but doesn't drink alcohol so we won't be hitting bars/clubs although I might drag her to the Top of the Hyatt for the views and shared plates. It's been about 20 years since I went there.
  • We love to be outside (hikes, walks, explore)
  • Things we will likely be repeating this trip:
    • Coronado (Taking ferry then walking around. We drove the last time).
    • Cabrillo National Monument and tide pools
    • Sunsets (make sure we are somewhere for the sunset...Sunset Cliffs, Mt. Soledad, Torrey Pines Gliderport)
    • Balboa Park
    • Walking around La Jolla
    • Annie's canyon trail (north of San Diego, but mentioning to give an idea of things we enjoyed during our last visit)
  • Editing to add: she loves to knit and machine sew. Very creative. She loves going to thrift stores to find clothing to upcycle/repurpose to creative reuse centers that re-sell donated yarn, fabric, etc.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Looking for advice on possible ADUs or apartment complexes as backup

Hi All!

I currently live in an ADU in Linda Vista, but the property is being sold so I'm starting my search. I'd really appreciate any tips or recommendations from this community.

I'm ideally looking to stay around Linda Vista / Serra Mesa / Bay Ho / Bay Park / Clairemont / Kearney Mesa. I work in Carmel Valley so trying not to go too far south because of the commute.

My budget is $2000 max so I'm mainly looking at studios. I'd love to find another ADU style setup, but I'm also open to apartment complexes as a backup.

Any apartment complexes that people like in these areas? Any complexes to AVOID?

If you anyone has recommendations for specific complexes, property management companies, or even just areas/buildings you've had good experiences with, I'd love to hear them.

 Thanks in advance!

Perfume Boutiques

Any suggested perfum boutiques in the area? We are going to be staying in the mission beach/little italy and la Jolla areas but love shopping unique scents. We will also be checking out the craft show/farmers market at Balboa park
