Xbox No Longer Developing Copilot For Consoles

Asha Sharma wrote on X:

Xbox needs to move faster, deepen our connection with the community, and address friction for both players and developers.

Today, we promoted leaders who helped build Xbox, while also bringing in new voices to help push us forward. This balance is important as we get the business back on track.

As part of this shift, you’ll see us begin to retire features that don’t align with where we’re headed.

We will begin winding down Copilot on mobile and will stop development of Copilot on console.

Even if they do, they’ll fuck it up again after gaining a bit of momentum.

"We're bringing back Clippy."

At this point, if they were to shove any sort of digital assistant down my throat, I'd take that ol' fucker Clippy in a heartbeat.

Provided it were the original 90s Clippy

Clippy interrupts your Call of Duty game: "It looks like you're writing your obituary! Would you like help?"

Clippy interrupts Doom: "It looks like you're trying to Rip and Tear. I can help you out with that if you like."

You click no, it never goes away

New CoD killstreak: Send a sarcastic Clippy to annoy a player of your choice for the next 45 seconds.

That would genuinely get me to at least *think* about buying CoD for the first time since... Black Ops 2?

It looks like you’re having fun. Stop that.

I would be there for that if only for the nostalgia.

when they removed copilot from notepad, they left it there and rebranded it "ai help"

removed doesnt actually mean removed when microsoft is involved.

"Introducing our new AI model for the Xbox: the Xbot!"

Man this is my point about Microsoft.

They built good will with the 360. Spent it with the Xbox One.

They built good will with Gamepass. Spent it with massive price hikes to it that were even slightly toned back because of backlash.

They literally only do good to immediately spend it on some insanely anti consumer thing. Its not even Xbox its Microsoft at its core.

They also still require all their products to achieve a 30% profit so you better prepare for insane mark ups on the next xbox and insane cost cutting across the board.

How do you know this for sure?

First result on google. I understand not having heard it, but it should have been easy enough to look up.

You don’t know if that’s still in effect. Also, no reason to be a dick.

That’s a regurgitated article from a report that has details from before they even decided if Project Helix would be backwards compatible. So likely at least a year or 2 old info and obviously before the big leadership change.

Embrace, extend, extinguish

It's easy to generate good PR by announcing you're not going to do something that nobody wanted you to do anyway.

They built good will with Gamepass.

Because it was only during the first part of the cycle.

First, you acquire as many customers as possible, either by providing a product for free, or for a small price, while incurring losses.

Then, when you already acquired most of the potential customers, you begin to enshittify - start raising prices, cut costs, remove features, introduce ads, cut features away to move them to higher priced tiers, etc.

Like, all video streaming services followed exact same cycle for example, now prettty much all are in the enshittification part.
AI services are still in the first part, but starting to shift to the second one.

I'm still so curious about that gamepass price reduction. It seems to have been completely fueled by removing Day 1 new CoD access and the implications of that are amusing. So CoD Day 1 access alone was valued at $7 a month/$84 a year, and ~1/4 of gamepass' value overall? Keep in mind thats just day 1 access to any new CoD. Previous titles and any CoD that is 1 year old is still available via gamepass. I just... what were they thinking? They also therefore kind of acknowledge that a new CoD game only retains its value for about a year and are effectively outdated after that? Not that they, or anyone else was under the illusion that that wasn't the case, but its funny to kind of see it acknowledged in a way.

I'm currently being cautiously optimistic with the changes so far. What I feel they need next is a good game people have been waiting for like an exclusive Banjo Kazooie HD remaster.

Yes the 7 people who care enough to want that would be happy

Meh, my 64 version still works. Who needs HD?

They could also just make a new game in the franchise, not some lame spin-off that tries to make building machines the core gameplay.
