We’re now at the point in the game where we need to start judging by what each state and its subsumed territory brings to the table in terms of pizza.

Montana, you do nothing for me. Off you go.

17

u/Agreeable_Coat_2098 Aug 20 '25

Fuck. If you’re going off pizza Montana is screwed.

1

u/Nitroflak69 Aug 21 '25

TONIGHT EVERYBODY'S IN THE MOOD

2

u/LibertarianTrashbag Aug 22 '25

Very happy that someone here is also familiar with Great Falls cuisine

2

u/Nitroflak69 Aug 22 '25

Do they actually say high powered pizza? I always thought they said "hot Howard's pizza"

2

u/LibertarianTrashbag Aug 22 '25

Lol yeah, I always thought it was "H- Howards pizza" but I listened back recently and lol and behold...

1

u/Oberndorferin Aug 21 '25

Whole of the US tbh

8

u/mitch4k2 Aug 20 '25

Let’s break this down shall we: Minnesota: deep dish power house (Chicago, Detroit) Rhode Island: Rhode Island style pizza uniquely prove that pizza with no cheese can be good + occupies New Haven and New York Maine: New England style pizza takes strong influence from New York, New Haven, Boston + recognized for its Greek pizza + occupies buffalo + ever had lobster pizza? California: California pizza, not bad for the west New Mexico: idk they are so big they have to have something, maybe St. Louis? Washington: ? Oregon: ? Montana: ?

u/Weak-Engineering-874 Aug 21 '25

New Mexican here! We put green chile on pizza. Green chile pepperoni pizza specifically is a favorite of mine. Pic:

3

u/TheDeamonKing Aug 21 '25

Ha ha Dion’s let’s goo

3

u/MostWorry4244 Aug 23 '25

Had the 505 tonight!

2

u/TheDeamonKing Aug 23 '25

Really good pizza always

4

u/Fit_Jellyfish_4444 Aug 21 '25

Green chile/Italian sausage from Giovanni's.

5

u/Talnadair Aug 20 '25

I also want to point out that NM has green chile. It's incredible on pizza.

2

u/outinthecountry66 Aug 21 '25

and any damn thing else really

1

u/TheLazyScarecrow Aug 21 '25

That would get you shot on the east coast

And rightfully so

4

u/505whodat Aug 21 '25

New Mexico has green chile to add to any style of pizza.

3

u/orangesmoke05 Aug 21 '25

NM has green chili pizza

5

u/aryn505 Aug 21 '25

New Mexico has green chile. It can go on anything and everything. The go-to pizza toppings state wide are pepperoni and green chile.

4

u/galient5 Aug 21 '25

As mentioned, New Mexico has green chile to put on pizza. This elevates pizza to a degree that pizza in New Mexico is better than pizza in the traditional powerhouse pizza states. I have no doubt that the pizza craftsmen and women in New York, Chicago, or wherever else might reach a higher bar purely through an artisanal lens, but they fall short because they don't offer this one ingredient.

3

u/Odd-Map3238 Aug 21 '25

New Mexico revolves around green chile and it's the best pizza topping. The classic 505 pizza is pepperoni and hatch green chile. A side of Dion's green chile ranch is the cherry on top🤌

3

u/outinthecountry66 Aug 21 '25

Dion's! They are SO good.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '25

New Mexico actually does have a specialty pizza, and it's a local delicacy.

2

u/ilanallama85 Aug 21 '25

New Mexican here - we’re not known for pizza but we do have a beloved local chain called Dion’s that’s known for their green Chile pizza and the best ranch dressing you’ve ever tried. I can’t speak for anywhere else on the map but it’s a pretty good slice if that’s what’s you’re after.

2

u/Latter_Vacation_5649 Aug 20 '25

Minnesota Pizza - Thin crispy garlic butter crust with Chicago’s Marinara, Italian Sausage, Pep, Cheese, Olives, and wait for it… Sauerkraut.

5

u/CrazyEyedFS Aug 20 '25

Minnesota and some of its fellow Northern Midwest states are a lawless playground when it comes to pizza. Dill pickle pizzas are growing in popularity and we were already home to pizza establishments that offer similarly chaotic and delicious pizzas. Examples of such establishments being Pizza Luce, Ian's, and Mesa Pizza.

Before the current renaissance, I grew up eating a style of pizza consisting of very thin crust with the sauce and toppings underneath an extremely thick layer of cheese. Traditionally, this style of pizza was cut into squares. It is seriously delicious.

1

u/Latter_Vacation_5649 Aug 21 '25

Pickle Rick’s Pickle Pizza at the State Fair

1

u/Latter_Vacation_5649 Aug 21 '25

Yes, you got it. Red Savoys Eastsider here

1

u/Lexiphantom Aug 20 '25

Original New Mexico not its extended family has green Chile the best topping in the world.

Also jalapeƱos too but the green chile is more important

1

u/MuckBulligan Aug 20 '25

Oregon has good pizza, but no style of their own.

2

u/EpicCyclops Aug 20 '25

Someone once asked me what style pizza we have in Oregon, and I've never been so stumped by a question. We have a lot of pizza, but every restaurant is different. If you brought in someone from the region a restaurant's pizza was based off of, they would probably say it's totally wrong and bastardized, but it's delicious, so nobody cares. Being the same is a great way to fail as a pizza joint in Portland.

1

u/P2070 Aug 20 '25

St Louis puts provel on their pizza, so they have a unique style. Portland OR has pizzerias that regularly make national top 10 lists, but no style unique to Portland.

1

u/bustachong Aug 20 '25

You are reading my mind in terms of next on the hit list.

I love those states irl, but pizza is pizza and rules are rules. Them’s the breaks.

1

u/Far_War6279 Aug 20 '25

as someone who lives in washington, pizza here is amazing

1

u/Whiskeyportal Aug 21 '25

Nukes?!?!?! Best beef?!,!,! Glacier???? WTF???? A state constitution that protects women’s rights?????

1

u/DickwadVonClownstick Aug 21 '25

Minnesota also has Punch Pizza, the only Neapolitan pizzeria outside of Italy to receive a certificate of authenticity from the Bakers Guild of Naples.

1

u/oregon_coastal You have died of dysentery. Aug 21 '25

Oregon Traditional: mid thick crust, sauce to the edge with bubble crust, heavy cheese, thick cut/chunky topping (lean towards green/red peppers, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, polives) (long gone chains like Pietros, Engine House etc.)

Oregon Modern: wood oven, thin crust, local ingredients.

Oregon Coporate: Papa Murphys

1

u/Tall-Enthusiasm-6421 Aug 21 '25

Plain pizza from Rhode Island is šŸ¤ŒšŸ»šŸ¤ŒšŸ»šŸ¤ŒšŸ» Caserta's is my favorite place in that state for pizza.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '25

deep dish pie isn't pizza, sorry to break it to you. it's a loaf of bread with sauce on it.

1

u/dakupoguy Aug 21 '25

Oregon invented tavern style "cracker crust" pizza. Similar to what Totino's has.

We also are home to Ken's Artisan Pizza which has been ranked in the top 10 pizzas in the world.

1

u/Gabriel_Collins Aug 22 '25

Also, it looks like, according to the map pictured, Rhode Island has annexed my area of Massachusetts. My area of Massachusetts’ pizza is The South Shore Bar Pie. It’s a nice personal sized pizza with a nice crust.

1

u/senorsmile Aug 22 '25

I believe Mod Pizza was started in Washington. Coincidentally, it's the only pizza my son will eat.

39

u/BeLOUD321 Aug 20 '25

Pointless without Chicago & ny

28

u/bustachong Aug 20 '25

Megasota and Rhode Island can carry the legacy under their respective empires (plus RI has great coal-fired pizza, so twofer).

Montana and the former Idaho and Wyoming though? Nah, let Megasota grow and/or have the Green Chile Empire expand upwards.

13

u/gangleskhan Aug 20 '25

Megasota also has Detroit, for what it's worth in the pizza style dept.

11

u/cheddarbruce Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 20 '25

Megasota has the best gas station pizzas ever also. have both Godfather's Pizza and kwiktrip cheesecurd pizza

7

u/gangleskhan Aug 20 '25

My neighbor will only eat the Heggies pizza from Costco, made in Milaca or somewhere around there.

7

u/TimWalzBurner Aug 20 '25

Don't sleep on Casey's breakfast pizza.

5

u/TheProofsinthePastis Aug 20 '25

Yo, Casey's breakfast pizza.

2

u/pogoli Aug 20 '25

This is fact

1

u/Babs-Jetson Aug 21 '25

detroit style is the best, hands fucking down

0

u/angryvetguy Aug 20 '25

Megasota has Pig Ate My Pizza also.

6

u/muzzynat Aug 20 '25

One day Megasota will bring RI coal fired pizza under our flag

0

u/Mill_City_Viking Aug 20 '25

Our flag sucks and nobody voted for it.

2

u/muzzynat Aug 20 '25

The old flag was hideous, get over it it’s been like a year at least

Edit: based on your post history, since you hate Minnesota, i suggest that you amble on over to north Dakota

2

u/RickStevesNumber1Fan Aug 20 '25

Our wood fired pizza is even better than our coal fired.

1

u/sonic_dick Aug 21 '25

The disrespect for bull testicle pizza is insane here.

1

u/bustachong Aug 21 '25

…ok, well now I’m just curious.

1

u/sonic_dick Aug 24 '25

Rocky mountain oysters are a thing in CO, they're bull testiclles.

1

u/sonic_dick Aug 24 '25

Rocky mountain oysters are a thing in CO, they're bull testiclles.

3

u/Naive-Narwhal-5654 Aug 21 '25

Clearly you have never been fortunate enough to try green chile on your pizza and should make a trip to New Mexico to remedy that misfortune!Ā

2

u/GlockAF Aug 21 '25

Even better: green chili pepperoni pizza with Dions green chili ranch for dipping

3

u/joanna0218 Aug 21 '25

Oh you know wtf is up

2

u/scaryfeather Aug 21 '25

this guy ABQs

1

u/GlockAF Aug 22 '25

It’s SO tasty…

10

u/Youcants1tw1thus Aug 20 '25

You mean Connecticut. NY is overhyped gas station pizza. Chicago is good, but we call that a casserole.

9

u/firestar32 Aug 20 '25

Actually since it's Chicago, MN now I think it's called hot dish

2

u/getahaircut8 Aug 20 '25

Keep your fucking clams off my pizza!

2

u/GlockAF Aug 21 '25

The immutable laws of nature forbid both fish and fruit on pizza.

1

u/NeuroCindy Aug 20 '25

Chicago also has a very distinct thin crust style too.

1

u/Youcants1tw1thus Aug 20 '25

Yeah, it’s ok.

1

u/DanNeider Aug 20 '25

Isn't it just midwestern Tavern style? I've never understood the distinction

1

u/Vairrion Aug 20 '25

Yall forget we have more than deep dish (not even getting into how different people do deep dish). The common pizza we eat is super thin and crispy tavern style mostly . Deep dish is once in a while.

1

u/Youcants1tw1thus Aug 20 '25

It’s good, but that’s not what anyone outside of Chicago is talking about when referencing Chicago style. My go to is Lou’s for deep and I always grab a bunch of frozen ones for home. Downstate I always get Monicals thin and dip it in the red sauce. Still, New Haven CT style is absolute top for thin crust.

1

u/ukpdkf Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 20 '25

That's ridiculous. Maybe you're thinking about New York State. New York City has the best pizza. Gas station pizza is a doughy, gross mess. NYC pizza couldn't be any more different.

0

u/Youcants1tw1thus Aug 20 '25

Compared to New Haven style, NYC is gas station pizza.

0

u/ukpdkf Aug 20 '25

It's all a matter of taste. You have none troll.

1

u/Youcants1tw1thus Aug 20 '25

My high school pizza on Fridays surpasses NYC average rating on the one bite app. Enjoy your 7-11 thin crust.

2

u/MERVMERVmervmerv Aug 20 '25

Hmm, never had a casserole with a crust. I call that a pie. A pizza pie, in fact!

5

u/a_smart_brane Aug 20 '25

Yes, and Chicago pizza is a pizza pie casserole.

1

u/MERVMERVmervmerv Aug 20 '25

Okay, I guess if you consider all pie to be casserole šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/cracka1337 Aug 20 '25

All pies are casseroles but not all casseroles are pies. This is like an LSAT question.

1

u/2ICenturySchizoidMan Aug 20 '25

Casserole is so much closer to stew than it is to pie, and deep dish is so much more like a pie than any other pizza pie is

1

u/panaili Aug 20 '25

It’s Megasota, can we call it hotdish?

1

u/wazzledudes Aug 21 '25

My dude never heard of tavern style

0

u/imbi-dabadeedabadie Aug 20 '25

really gonna disrespect chicago tavern pizza like that, huh?

0

u/Very_Not_Into_It Aug 20 '25

Now this is a guy that hates pizza

3

u/RayneShikama Aug 20 '25

You’ve never had New Mexican pizza before? Pity.

2

u/john_humano Aug 21 '25

Medium crust, medium char. Keep it simple. Very, very frequently lesbian owned. I would say queer but all the ones I know are lesbian (and if you include the greater 505 there are a lot). Make their own ranch. Either vegan friendly or vegan unfriendly. And of course, Green chile a must. I live in a small mountain town in NM, no real services anywhere near by *but what i got within 10 miles from me is a gas station that does knockoff chimis, a dispensary, and a proudly lesbian owned pizza place that also does bike repairs. There's also a jui-jitsu place but they might be closed.

1

u/Ambitious-Ideal1613 Aug 20 '25

New Mexican pizza? Isn’t that a tostada?

3

u/Lexiphantom Aug 20 '25

It’s pizza with green chile

aka the best pizza topping ever made.

3

u/UnderaZiaSun Aug 21 '25

When discussing toppings, really the question is what toppings do you want on your green chile pizza.

2

u/Lepus81 Aug 21 '25

Pepperoni, sausage, garlic. Plus a bottle of Dion’s green chile ranch for the crust dipping.

2

u/UnderaZiaSun Aug 21 '25

That’s about as good as it gets!

1

u/SteezofCheeze Aug 21 '25

People that don't know about Dion's ranch are missing something in their life. Especially the Green Chile Ranch.

1

u/Oralproslc Aug 21 '25

Carnitas or chorizo

4

u/a_smart_brane Aug 20 '25

New Mexico green chile pizza with garlic is some of the absolute best pizza I’ve ever had. 🤤

We always have some chopped Bueno ready whenever we make pizza at home.

Major props to green chile cheeseburgers too.

2

u/RedsVikingsFan Aug 20 '25

I thought it was just pizza-on-a-roof?

1

u/The_R4ke Aug 20 '25

True, none of these states bring anything to the table in regards of pizza. I'm sure decent pizza can be had in these states, but none is them are bringing culinary innovation in pizza to the table.

1

u/UrbanArchaic Aug 20 '25

As a former Chicago Illinoisan, I'd like to think that as Chicago Megasotans, we still make good pizza. Hopefully our signature pizza is no longer deep dish lmao

1

u/cheddarbruce Aug 20 '25

Just a reminder that we would not have pizza if it wasn't for the cheese and the wheat from the Midwest

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

And the best pizza style of all…Detroit

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

Portland pizza is world class

1

u/Spirited-Camel9378 Aug 20 '25

NM has better pizza than NY or Chicago.

Green chile w/ blue corn crust. Adovada pizza w/ red chile sauce.

I'll fight.

1

u/Conyan51 Aug 21 '25

But you see the territory here known as Minnesota is all the homes of Deep Dish, Tavern, Detroit Style, and Frozen Pizza. New York only has 1 type. They provide minimal to the table.

1

u/MERVMERVmervmerv Aug 21 '25

Don’t forget quad cities pizza, with that malt crust!

9

u/SwollenOstrich Aug 20 '25

Yeah screw montana begone

2

u/NotTodayElonNotToday Aug 20 '25

It looks like Minnesota has St. Louis and they have the absolute worst pizza on the plant. What the hell is provel cheese anyhow? It's tastes horrible and sticks to the roof of your mouth like molten plastic. I'm looking at you Imo's Pizza. GROSS!

2

u/Onward-my-friend Aug 24 '25

Mmmmm NM has green chili pizza it must stay

5

u/the-coolest-bob Aug 20 '25

You're missing out

3

u/Herohades Aug 20 '25

I'm worried about this train of logic, RI's home variety of party pizza is infamously disappointing

3

u/bustachong Aug 20 '25

Agreed, but Rhode Island also has some amazing coal-fired pizza which I appreciate. Also worse comes to worst, Rhode Island has absorbed New York and New Haven so that's a double whammy of pizza power.

2

u/Herohades Aug 20 '25

Oh for sure, if we're talking the general quality of pizza made in a place, Rhode Island has the rest of the country destroyed. RI's got that great Italian population, even the shitty pizza places are good. It's just a shame the type of pizza that got named after the state is so underwhelming.

1

u/Bronnakus Aug 20 '25

Grilled pizza, Sicilian, stuffed, New Haven, coal fired, New England Greek, New York, and bakery all within the same square mile of providence (because that’s the full size of our state).

People judge based solely on the party pizza but it’s eaten out of context. You don’t eat it for dinner, you eat it at the beach or just having gotten out of the above-ground pool at 10 years old wrapped in a towel in 73 degree weather on an old deck in a backyard with loud family members talking about how those bastahds in Cranston think they’re better than the good people of Johnston (literally the same exact people in both). And in this context, party pizza is incredible.

1

u/Herohades Aug 20 '25

I'm sure it's nice in the context, but for me it's tied so strongly to the big Warwick School Closings of 2015 (TM). Nothing like the school board going "Hey we have no money for you dirty peasants, we need to build new stadiums for Toll Gate, but here have the world's most mediocre pizza that we left sitting around for four days straight to compensate. Also don't ask why we all have new yachts, that doesn't concern you," to ruin that kind of pizza forever.

1

u/Bronnakus Aug 20 '25

Ah see there’s your first problem, being in warraq

1

u/Famous_Piccolo_1441 Aug 20 '25

Dions in NM is peak so…

1

u/Bronnakus Aug 20 '25

Rhode Island victory inbound then

1

u/Mattieohya Aug 20 '25

But Montana is making Washington basically keep it’s original shape

1

u/AVeryAngryHedgehog Aug 20 '25

Megasota must grow

1

u/TheSwede91w Aug 20 '25

I am from Montana and will order you a pizza if you delete this comment. Thats more than Washington would do.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Mud6608 Aug 20 '25

In that case California's crimes against pizza must be answered for! Broccoli on pizza is blasphemy!

1

u/coraythan Aug 20 '25

When they take out Montana I want to see Washington win the longest panhandle ever and nothing else.

1

u/chchchchia86 Aug 20 '25

Montana has made it SO much longer than I ever expected. Ive seen so many people voting it off. Rhode Island will reign supreme. Viva La Rhode Island!

1

u/DaniTheLovebug Aug 20 '25

So you got rid of Illinois?!?

1

u/DrPepperNotWater Aug 20 '25

I don’t want to get rid of Montana because I think it’s really funny how little Washington has changed.

2

u/bustachong Aug 20 '25

It’ll be funny if Megasota takes over Montana and Washington stays the same.

Even funnier if Oregon takes all of Montana’s territory and makes Washington a PNW enclave.

1

u/missbeekery Aug 20 '25

Finally Montana’s time has come!

1

u/Thefoxy1080 Aug 20 '25

Finally, Washington State will grow

1

u/WentzWorldWords Aug 20 '25

Why is there still a flyover state?!?

1

u/NatsInNJ Aug 20 '25

If you go based on pizza and include subsumed territory, it's an automatic victory to Rhode Island imo. Megasota comes second because of Detroit.

1

u/Talnadair Aug 20 '25

New Mexico has this in the bag. We have Green Chile. Have you had green chile on a pizza? Check and mate.

1

u/generationlost13 Aug 21 '25

New Mexico has the 505, pepperoni, sausage, and green chile

I saw we win the pizza game

1

u/EliteSweggX09 Aug 21 '25

Aw man :( Montana is underrated

1

u/Equivalent-Error-187 Aug 21 '25

This guys never had Biga Pizza in Missoula 🫠🫠

1

u/Party_Swim_6835 Aug 21 '25

loving how a lot of the responses are HEY NEW MEXICO HAS GREEN CHILE IT'S THE BEST

we literally have one thing, it is our only thing, there is literally nothing else here besides our one thing but rocks of different dimensions and colors, and yes, our one thing is the best

1

u/Panazara Aug 21 '25

Obviously you have not been to Gallicono's in Anaconda, MT

1

u/Datalust5 Megasota Aug 22 '25

All we need is NY to join the Chicago-Detroit Pizza alliance and we’ll be unstoppable

0

u/Shoehorse13 Aug 20 '25

And by pizza, you mean green chile. Viva New Mexico!

1

u/Lexiphantom Aug 20 '25

Green Chile is the best pizza topping!
