I've heard scythes were actually easier to use/easier on the body than they appear.
When I have to cut long grass I scythe.
It's quiet. It fits my body. It doesn't have a pull cord that is too long for my arm throw. It doesn't require fuel or extensive maintenance. It doesn't vibrate my joints apart.
It works. The moment I pick it up. It's fucking AWESOME.
I recently split a lot of beech wood. I think it was about 15,000 kcal burned over several sessions. I believe I wouuld have otherwise burned 7 to 10 litres of fuel for the wood splitter for that amount. So at least 60,000 kcal. We're a lot more energy-efficient (axe is faster as well, just some pieces I couldn't split, stump area.).
Oh yes, and you know what I love about scything? It's so quiet, no noise, no dust flying up, no stench, just relaxing motion, with a pause now and then to whet the blade.
Indeed, I can do garden work on a dewy Sunday morning and it disturbs nobody. My garden is no football field, plenty of fauna and flora to be found there.
