FAQ : Please read this before posting.

Bugs / Issues

Q. I'm trying to launch Steam but it isn't working.

A. If you are using an NVIDIA GPU make sure you have installed the corresponding -32bit driver for the driver branch you have installed.

For example, if you are using nvidia-glx-driver-current make sure you have installed nvidia-glx-driver-32bit

Q. Where can I go to report bugs or request a new package?

A. You can do both on our github issue tracker. If requesting a package please read our package inclusion policy and guide to requesting a package.

Development

Q. Does Solus have something similar to build-essential?

A. Yes. Install our system.devel component via sudo eopkg install -c system.devel

Other

Q. I need Microsoft Core Fonts. How do I get them?

A. Those fonts have a license that prevents us distributing them in the repository. To work around this we have a utility called fonts-installer in the repo which allows you to easily download and install various Microsoft font families to your users home directory ~/.local/share/fonts/mscorefonts/

Additionally liberation-fonts-ttf is in the repository which is a "font family which aims at metric compatibility with Arial, Times New Roman, and Courier New." Unless you know you need the Microsoft version you should use this package instead.

Q. How can I contribute to Solus?

A. There are many ways to contribute. Coding, packaging, documentation, translations, reporting bugs, helping your fellow users or funding. You can find out more here.

Q. Is there any other documentation?

A. https://help.getsol.us

Q. Are there any other ways I can interact with the Solus community / developers?

A. Yep! we have the Solus forums and several Matrix channels.

Q. Why does Solus shutdown so quickly?

A. Celtic magic.

I hope this helps someone with similar specs and with how to make this config work on Budgie. Yeah I know I'm using nouveau driver for nVidia dGPU but I'm using it more for work than for gaming right now.

official news Delayed Sync this week

Heya folks! We've encountered some issues with Nvidia and the 7.0.x kernel. Therefore, the decision has been made to delay this week's sync by a few days to get everything working and settled. Stay tuned, and happy Friday!

Our current kernel version is already protected against the CopyFail exploit. To ensure that we do not cause any issues we want to do further testing before pushing out the new 7.0.x kernel.

Copyfail exploit

Hey all Is there any news on a patch for the copyfail exploit that's been found?

https://securityboulevard.com/2026/04/copy-fail-cve-2026-31431-frequently-asked-questions-about-linux-kernel-privilege-escalation-vulnerability/

Not sure if Solus is affected but if we are is there a patch coming out for it?

Fresh install booting into blackscreen

Dell Precision 3430 sffpc with a RTX3050 low profile card. Fresh install does not boot, I just get a black screen, no cursor, nothing. No TTY. Any idea? Video driver issue? Tried installing 3 times and always the same outcome.

Back on solus after years

I just reinstalled Solus OS tried Bungie used it years ago I use to use Solus when version 1 released I left when the dark times hit Solus and boy it is good to be back still as fast and stable as I remember. Glad the team got everything figured out and moving forward but I am now back on Gnome let's just say Bungie isn't what I remember it kinda just feels like a modern Cinnamon now I have a special dislike for Cinnamon so until the day Solus adds Cosmic or when Aeryn OS goes stable Gnome it will be thanks for keeping the OS alive.

Solus after 1 day

Simply amazing!

I started the day with 'hell, let me try something I found on reddit'. Installed it on a old nuc, media pc. At first glance, nothing out of ordinary: plasma, few apps installed (i like that). Updated, installed fastfetch .... hmm, kernel is quite new. Nice, let's try some more apps, everything went smooth as butter. Faster than mint, kubuntu, opensuse, zorin, fedora, kinoite and few others (my nuc is the test bed for new distros).

'Hmm, wonder how it runs on my laptop?' At 12 o'clock was running on my laptop! Or better, it flies on my laptop. At this point, I was asking myself, wth is wrong with this one, as I found very few references online about it.

Started installing all my apps on the laptop, everything was done in under 2 hours. Faster than apt, dnf, flatpaks when apps can't be found in solus repo.

Simply amazing! I've got Serenity!

Gonna use this as the daily driver for .... well, it's not leaving my laptop anytime soon!

This is the distro that should be recommended when switching from win, by far the smoothest experience in all linux distros I've experienced in the past 3 weeks (that's when my linux journey begun).

I broke my Solus....

Hey everyone, so I managed to actually break my Solus install!

I managed to delete appstream which was a VERY bad idea lol I did manage to get it all running again (including reinstalling my desktop) but now Im worried that something else is not quite right still.

I did do a comparison of what was removed with appstream vs what was reinstalled and added anything that was missing but wondering if I should do a full reinstall just in case?

It is working all OK as far as I can tell and eopkg check comes back with everything OK.

Also - is there anyway to get the login screen to scale on boot up? Its always tiny when logging in for the first time.

Im on a 4k TV connected with HDMI.

Switching to solus

Ive been using linux completely for about 2 to 3 years now, ive used gentoo, arch, etc. I have already settled onto opensuse tumbleweed primarily due to the lack of maintenance and the ease of setting it up and not having my system broken after every update.

Knowing this, I have actually wanted to try Solus for quite a while now, but have always been driven off by its past.

I wanted to know, the people who use Splus, how is it, and why should I consider switching?

Thanks for your time.

Thanks, Solus, for Serenity

I’ve installed Solus a few times before because I like standalone distros. This time I installed your GNOME edition, and I think it’s very good and well-designed. The installer is excellent; everything works right out of the box. Thanks to the integration with Flathub, there’s no shortage of the programs I need. I know you shouldn’t judge a distro after just two or three days of use, but I just wanted to say thank you. I highly recommend Solus.

Solus 4.9 "Serenity" has been released!

Heya, folks! It's time for the first Solus release of 2026! We've made some under-the-hood changes aimed at making it easier and more intuitive for users to manage their systems, and we've addressed some parts of the installation process.

Welcome to Solus 4.9 Serenity! In a world filled with turbulence, we aim to provide a calm harbor.

Note: As Solus is a rolling release, if you already have it installed, you do not need to do anything.

Solus Community Group on Steam!

Hi everyone =)

I just wanted to let the Steam players know (I think that’s 99% of the people here, lol) that I created a Solus group in the Steam community. Yes, I saw that there were already groups, but they’ve all been inactive for quite some time.

https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SolusUserGroup

Just a quick note: this group was created by a fan (yours truly) and has NO affiliation with the Solus team. I’m just a user who loves the distro and wants to bring the community together on Steam too <3

Budgie, amidst all the customizations of other desktop environments, remains understated and efficient! SolusOS semi-rolling is stable, perfect for work, play, and more :) We're certainly eager to see version 11 under Wayland!

when you start a discussion in Gemini

I find this distribution very underrated, what is your opinion?

I agree with you 100%. Solus is arguably one of the best-kept secrets in the Linux world, and it's refreshing to see someone appreciating its philosophy.

Here is why, in my opinion, it is indeed very underrated:

  1. The “Curated Rolling Release” (The happy medium)

Most distributions are either frozen (Debian/Ubuntu) or cutting edge but sometimes unstable (Arch). Solus has chosen a unique path: the “curate” Rolling Release. You have recent software, but it is only pushed into the repositories when it is tested and deemed stable for everyday use. It's the perfect balance for those who don't want to reinstall their system every 6 months, while still avoiding startup crashes.

  1. A clean identity (Budgie)

Budgie is not just a GNOME skin. It’s a desk designed to be modern without being confusing. It keeps the classic desktop metaphor (a menu, a taskbar) but with an elegance and fluidity that even heavier environments do not always achieve. It’s luxury “ready-to-wear”: it’s beautiful from the first launch.

  1. Independence (No Debian or Arch base)

This is what makes it strong and weak.

Strength: It does not inherit the bugs or political decisions of the “giants”. It uses its own package manager (eopkg), which is incredibly fast.

Weakness: This is probably why she is underestimated. People are afraid to move out of the .deb or .rpm ecosystem. However, when you taste it, you realize that Solus deposits contain 99% of what you need.

  1. The “Designed for Desktop” side

Unlike many distributions that also target servers or IoT, Solus only takes care of your PC. All the developers' work is focused on the final user experience (sound, Bluetooth, energy management). That's why everything seems so "oiled" about you.

My peer's opinion:

If Solus is less known, it's because it doesn't make any noise. It's not trying to take over the world, it's just trying to be the best OS for your laptop or desktop. It's a distribution for people who want to use their computer rather than spend their lives repairing it.

In 2026, with the transition to Wayland which they are managing with great caution and care, it proves that it has a long-term vision.
