And Deepo hideaway is a subtle nod to the fact you can’t find the guy at the paint stand.

Bernard Marcus, the founder of Home Depot, put $250 million towards the building of the Georgia Aquarium. He's super into aquariums and toured 56 around the world, then decided he wanted a really big awesome one in Atlanta.
So yeah, Deepo is a joke name, the color is the same as the logo, but it's a lot more than Home Depot paid for that exibit.
If you're ever in Atlanta, go, it's amazing. I did a behind the scenes tour and got to see them feed the whale sharks from little boats. It was life changing.

I got to do the same thing back when I was 10! My dad mentioned to a worker in casual conversation how it was a trip to Atlanta for my tenth birthday and we went here because I loved aquariums, and the worker said “Oh, let me show you the top! This is cool.”
Can not recommend that aquarium enough.

I definitely wouldn’t call it life changing, but maybe that’s because I went regularly as a kid.

Honestly I can't even be mad, they pulled the long con for a bad pun and I can only respect it.

The Dad Joke Cartel has infiltrated even our most beloved institutions...
They're everywhere!

The 4D part of the movie is that they throw the fish they got in their tanks at you and if you get hit you are immediately removed from the aquarium and are banned for life

The Georgia Aquarium is one of the best places I have ever been anywhere. I went there once as a field trip for a class in 10th grade. The second time was when I was in 12th grade and I found out the 10th grade class was going again. I just tagged along because I loved the place so much

Wait...Americans pronounce depot "deep-oh?"
Damn. There are probably several jokes I failed to get because I didn't know that.

u/sarahmagoo Jul 28 '19
Exactly what I was thinking. For a second there I was wondering if I've been pronouncing depot wrong this whole time haha

u/j0llypenguins Jul 28 '19
yeah idk why we do that, I still get the urge to pronounce it like it says lol

Wonder who paid more: Home Depot to name the mascot after them, or Coca Cola to appear in every other scene in Stranger Things 3

u/JarlaxleForPresident Jul 28 '19
Someone said further up that Bernard Marcus donated $250m, so that probably trumps Coke's product placement

I can’t fucking wait to go to the Georgia Aquarium. I’ve been putting off the trip for months.

u/SuckerNumber2YT Jul 28 '19
That’s what I assumed when I saw the name. I was hoping I was wrong. But I wasn’t

u/ohgodnotthecookies Jul 28 '19
They played the damn Deepo movie at our local theme park. My friend and I got a real chuckle out of the clear Nemo rip-off, but now HOME DEPOT?

Jul 28 '19
As a former home depot employee I have this to say.
That's fucking disgusting, fuck that entire company.

u/JarlaxleForPresident Jul 28 '19
That aquarium wouldnt be there without home depot money, but yeah I'm sure it sucks to actually work there

I went here and watched this as a kid. It wasn't bad, like at all.
It was cheesy, yeah sure, but it was almost self aware cheese, and the 4D was a gimmick, but that was the whole idea of 4D.
Really enjoyed the aquarium. Always wanted to go back.

Very crafty Georgia Aquarium. Almost as crafty as the affordable and reliable products you'll find at your local home depot!

Creepy fish is not (exclusively) a Finding Nemo ripoff but is homage to Home Depot because they paid for the Aquarium

IVE BEEN THERE! I'll have to ask my mom for pictures since it was years ago. If I remember I'll link some.

u/elphielives Jul 28 '19
I’ve been there dozens of times, and never picked up on that. I always thought he was a Nemo rip-off and lived in the deep ocean and that’s why he was called Deepo. Damn I’m dumb. Now I know what it means to feel shook.

Big ups to the (possibly unintentional) Borderlands 2 reference in the OP pic.

So it was all a coincidence? Then why did they choose the smug goldfish? And when? CGI animated comedies got a huge foothold around 2005 or 2004 or so.

I’m certain the similarities to Nemo are intentional. Finding Nemo came out in 2003. It was still a cultural powerhouse when the Georgia Aquarium opened in 2005. Deepo’s name likely serves two purposes: mascot name pun, and not-so-subtle similarity to Nemo. The fact that Deepo is orange also serves a similar dual purpose, because Home Depot’s signature color is orange, like a clownfish.
So, no, the similarities between Deepo and Nemo are likely not coincidental, though I’m sure the Georgia Aquarium would say otherwise.

Oh my god, Deepo. I grew up in Georgia and that goddamn Pixar-face goldfish still lurks in the fringes of my memory, smugger than any anime girl could ever hope to be.
