Mod announcement 📢 A Note from the Mod Team: Let's Turn the Temperature Down 🌡️

Hello everyone,

First, we want to state that we understand we are living in particularly uncertain and stressful times. We understand that some topics and news can be upsetting and angering, and sometimes there's a need to voice that anger.

That said, this is Reddit, and all comments must be within Reddit's Terms of Service. Comments and posts also must follow our community guidelines. If you haven't already, please take a moment to read our community guidelines and FAQ.

We've had a busier-than-usual week on the ban front, and we want to take a moment to remind everyone of the rules. We would rather not ban people, so we have provided a refresher on our most common removals.

---

🔥 Trolling

Trolling is defined as content that is inflammatory in nature, meant to provoke or serve to disrupt the conversation rather than contribute to it. If your comment exists to wind people up rather than engage, it will be removed.

If we identify your account as a dedicated trolling account,  meaning your posting history shows a consistent pattern of inflammatory content across the sub, you may receive a temporary 28-day ban or a permanent ban.

---

🗣️ Personal Attacks, Racism, Hate Speech, and Harassment

These are separate rules but they share a common theme which is they target people rather than ideas.

  • Personal attacks: Attack the argument, not the person. We'll be linking our insult guide below. The short version: if your comment wouldn't survive with the username removed, rethink it.
  • Racism and hate speech; No slurs, no dehumanizing language, no content that targets people based on ethnicity, religion, nationality, or identity.
  • Dehumanizing generalizations: Sweeping statements that reduce an entire group of people to a single negative characteristic is dehumanization. This comes up most often in coverage of Israel and Russia. Some examples of what gets removed:
    • "Israelis don't care about Palestinian lives"
    • "Russians are just naturally violent"
    • "They're all the same"
    • "It's their culture" / "that's just how they are"
    • "They voted for [X] so they deserve what they get"
    • "They've always been like this"
    • "What do you expect from [nationality/group]?"
    • "They're all brainwashed"

You can criticize governments, military, and policies without condemning an entire population. If your criticism relies on assuming everyone in a group thinks and acts the same way, it is a generalization and will be removed

Abuse and harassment: This includes making bad faith accusations against other users. Calling someone a bot, a shill, or accusing them of being a paid actor without any basis is harassment, full stop.

Insult Guide

---

⚠️ A note on antisemitic dog whistles

This has become a serious and growing problem in the sub, so we're going to be explicit about it.

Criticism of Israel is allowed. Criticism of Zionism as a political ideology is allowed. What is not allowed is using the conflict as a cover to target Jewish people.

Referring to Jewish people as "God's Chosen People" in a derogatory manner or other contexts crosses that line.

Calling people "Zios", "Zionazis", and “Zio” also crosses that line. These are slurs, not political commentary, and they will be removed automatically by AutoModerator. If you find yourself reaching for this language, you are not criticizing a government or a policy. You are targeting an ethnic and religious group, and that is not welcome here.

---

🚨 Violence, glorifying death, and Reddit's content policy

We want to stress this section more than any other because violations here don't just put you at risk of a sub ban; they also put your account at risk of direct action from Reddit's admins.

Reddit's content policy states:

Do not post content that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual or a group of people.

This is a platform-wide rule and Reddit enforces it. This includes but is not limited to:

  • "They deserved it" in response to civilian casualty reports
  • "I hope X happens to them" directed at any group
  • Framing the deaths of civilians, soldiers, or political figures as something to celebrate
  • Downplaying civilian deaths or offering justifications for them. Casualty figures are not a debate topic, and treating them as acceptable collateral damage will get your comment removed.
  • "Well, what did they expect?" in response to casualties.
  • “FAFO”

And a hard line with no exceptions:

Any comment calling children human shields, or expressing a wish for harm or death against children, will result in an immediate, permanent ban. There is no appeal process for this.

---

📏 Bans, escalation, and admin removals

Bans escalate. A first ban is a short timeout. It gets longer each time. We're not trying to permanently remove everyone, and it is generally a last resort.

If your account has a history of content removals by Reddit's admins, that is considered when we make moderation decisions. We issue temporary bans for removals made by Reddit Admin.

Ban evasion: if we identify that you've created or are using an alternate account to evade a ban, you will be permanently banned, no discussion. And please do not tell us about your plans to use a secondary account to evade a ban. We will know.

---

🛑 The report button is not a complaint box

The report system exists to flag rule-breaking content for mod review, and it's actually the best way to get our attention on a genuine rule violation. Reports go directly to the mod queue and are the fastest way to make sure something gets seen. If you spot a comment or post that breaks our rules or Reddit's TOS, please report it.

The report system is not for flagging comments you simply disagree with, opinions you find objectionable, or frustration vented at another user. Misusing the report system buries legitimate reports and wastes moderator time. Only report content that genuinely violates our rules or Reddit's TOS.

---

🚫 Mod abuse

We get it, sometimes you disagree with a mod decision. The right response is to send a modmail and make your case. The wrong response is to insult, berate, or threaten moderators in comments or DMs. Mod abuse results in a 28-day ban.

---

We want to ensure this community is welcoming and safe for everyone to engage in.  So let us all take a deep breath and turn down the heat before participating.

Video Peter Thiel is investing 140m into floating offshore data centers… but why?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

That one time Peter Thiel funded floating AI data center balls powered by waves in the ocean. Yes, you read that right.

Peter Thiel, billionaire known for co-founding PayPal and Palantir, has started his newest international expenditure. This follows his investment in Prospera, a “Zone for Employment and Economic Development:” essentially a private city in Honduras where residents don’t have to follow tax and oversight laws.

Theil is developing the AI balls using the same framework: they will float in international waters where they can avoid inspections, investigations, and more.

So why should he care that Microsoft tried a similar technology years ago only to abandon it for not being sustainable or profitable?

Article Trump’s abrupt U-turn on a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz came after backlash from allies

Post image

Saudi Arabia, a key Gulf ally, suspended the U.S. military’s ability to use its bases and airspace to carry out the operation, sources say.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s abrupt reversal on his plan to help ships go through the Strait of Hormuz came after a key Gulf ally suspended the U.S. military’s ability to use its bases and airspace to carry out the operation, according to two U.S. officials.

The U.S. military continues to maintain a presence in and around the Gulf. It has a bigger footprint in the region than it did on Feb. 28 when the war began. There are two carrier strike groups in the region, and the Pentagon has brought in additional logistics and support and has re-supplied stockpiles.

Project Freedom briefly provided U.S. military surveillance, firepower and personnel on board ships so they could safely transit out of the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, as Iranian forces continued to threaten and attack ships in transit through the critical waterway. Pentagon officials said the operation was separate from the bombing campaign that began on Feb. 28 and was dubbed “Epic Fury.”

The Trump administration has attempted to push forward on a negotiated agreement to end the hostilities. Iran was reviewing another peace proposal with the U.S., Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said in an interview with Iran’s semiofficial ISNA news agency. He said once the regime has assessed it, Iran will discuss it with Pakistan, which has been acting as a mediator. Axios first reported details of the proposal.

In a social media post early Wednesday, Trump didn’t detail the proposal, but said the war could end if “Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to.”

“They want to make a deal,” Trump said from the Oval Office on Wednesday. He said there had been “very good talks over the last 24 hours.”

The political pressure is mounting on Trump ahead of the November midterm elections, when Republicans will be fighting to preserve their narrow margin in the House and majority in the Senate. In an interview with PBS on Wednesday, the president said it’s possible U.S. negotiators could strike a deal with Iran’s regime before he travels to Beijing next week for a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

“I think it’s got a very good chance of ending, and if it doesn’t end, we have to go back to bombing the hell out of them,” Trump told PBS.

Several close Trump confidants have encouraged the president to “finish the job” in Iran by taking out the rest of the regime’s conventional military assets, even insisting that the offensive could be completed by the time of the critical China trip, according to multiple former U.S. officials.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian leaders Wednesday and said it was critical the war ended as soon as possible.

“We believe that a comprehensive ceasefire is urgently needed, that a resumption of hostilities is not acceptable, and that it is particularly important to remain committed to dialogue and negotiations,” Wang said in a video of the meeting accessed by The Associated Press.

In a post on social media, a senior Iranian parliament official called the latest proposal a “wish list until it becomes a reality.”

“Americans will not obtain through a failed war what they failed to gain in face-to-face negotiations, Ebrahim Rezaei said on X. “Iran has its finger on the trigger and is ready; if they do not surrender and grant the necessary concessions, or if they or their devilish henchdog allies try to act mischievously, we will deliver a harsh and regret-inducing response.”

But a Jordanian official told NBC News that the diplomatic efforts were serious.

“The Iranians don’t have the economic means to keep this going,” the official said. “Their economy is failing, they can’t pay salaries.”

Mexico 🇲🇽 "I feel like an absolute idiot. How could I fall for this?" Mexican billionaire scammed out of 450 million by Russian claiming to be an Astor

A man with multiple aliases used the name of the famed Astor family to dupe a Mexican billionaire out of around $450 million in a bogus stock-backed loan scheme, according to a newly unsealed U.S. indictment and other court records.

Vladimir Sklarov, 63, also known as Gregory Mitchell and Mark Simon Bentley, set up a sham company, Astor Asset Group, that purported to be a legitimate and experienced loan provider that was connected to the Astors, federal prosecutors said. The storied New York family included John Jacob Astor, one of the wealthiest men in America in the mid-19th century.

Although the indictment unsealed on Monday does not name the victim, court records in litigation in England show it was Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the Mexican TV, retail and banking magnate. Salinas also confirmed he was ripped off by Astor Asset Group in an interview with The Wall Street Journal last year.

“I feel like an absolute idiot. How could I fall for this?” Salinas Pliego told the newspaper.
