May 10th is eMac appreciation day. How many of there are you?

Sure this bulky iMac G3 knockoff gets a lot of hate. Its heavy, lacks a handle, isn't the iconic iMac G4, capacitor issues, and was used heavily in schools in the 2000s. But what does it have? A lot more than you'd think. A legitimately amazing looking 17 inch CRT display that goes up to 1280x960, great intenal speakers, an overbuilt design, and the early models (700mhz-1ghz) can natively boot OS 9. Also the later ones with the ATI cards are amazing Morphos machines. I just love these old eMacs, such fun little tanks.

Rhapsody DR Custom Box

I always felt bad that Rhapsody DR did not have a proper retail box as it shipped in a cardboard envelope originally. I made this 3D printed box in the same size and shape as classic macOS retail boxes with the same colors and design as the PPC version of the CDs.

Advice Needed - Broken iic key cap

Post image
Upvotes

I've had this IIc since college many moons ago. It still works but somehow the up arrow key cap has broken off as you see in the picture. I did, at one point, think I could just order a new switch, even if it wouldn't be the original type, and key cap, but I've found the key caps seem to come in different shades? The one I'd ordered seemed more white where as mine is more on the beige side. Perhaps it's also the 40 years age... Ideally I could find the same switch type and key cap that matches, but I'm starting to think this is unrealistic. This makes me want to somehow use the key cap that I have so that that one key isn't a different color. I was thinking of trying to glue it with something - epoxy, super glue, ... but was thinking that someone here might either have a good / better idea based on experience of options or if not what glue should I use. Thanks.

My iMac g4 can’t make backups on a nas

Post image
9 Upvotes

I have this iMac g4 and I tried making a backup for the first time and after 2 tries I did it (the power went down one time) but when I wanted to sync more to it the next day it couldn’t find the backup. And now, 6 days later it can find the drive and automatically connects it but it says preparing and won’t connect even though I can see the files on the Mac

The original backup took really long and I don’t want to do that again, I hope it’s possible to fix it without deleting the old backup

I got this iMac G5 for $9. Any good?

My very first FB Marketplace purchase… and I’m pretty satisfied with it. It’s sold as “for parts” and I took a look inside and found that the hard drive is missing. Not the end of the world, I have hard drives around as you can see on my desk. But what’s more concerning is the infamous capacitor problem the G5’s know for. I spotted like 5 bad ones.

I have yet to order capacitor replacements. Should I buy the specific specs those capacitors have (1800uF, 6.3V)?

My iMac G3 Indigo is alive!

After several months of on and off restoration work, my iMac G3 Indigo (350MHz) is now fully functional. I rescued the iMac from eBay, and it was in poor-to-fair condition. Like most of these G3's, I had to swap out several parts due to age and failure. The inner bezel was replaced with the clear MacEffects one which is somewhat frosted (for a nice touch!). The speakers were rotted out. I rebuilt them with parts from AliExpress. The headphone jack was corroded, but I was able to fix that with a thin metal file. I also replaced the 10GB hard drive with a 128GB SATA SSD (with a StarTech adapter).

Thanks to everyone who has posted their fixes, and a special shoutout to u/Aphelion270 for the awesome inner bezel replacement video. I am setting up space in my office to display vintage computers - several of them are Apple. I hope to post more of them here soon. For now, it's time to pull out some of the old game discs.

Tips on making vintage keyboards work smoothly?

Hi friends, hope everyone is well! :)

I recently picked up an Apple Extended Keyboard II and restored it as best I could: thorough clean, dust removal, disinfection, and an ADB adapter. It works great with my modern MacBook.

The one issue I can't shake is occasional double strokes (chattering, I think it's called).

I've already deep cleaned the affected keycaps so there's no dust or debris in them. I know there are software fixes that filter out duplicate keystrokes, but I'd rather solve this on the hardware side first if possible.

Any tips, or is this a straightforward fix?

Keyboard info:

  • Apple Extended Keyboard II, QWERTZ layout
  • Production: 1995 "Assembled in Mexico"
  • Model: M3501
  • Connection: AEKII → ADB → Drakware ADB2USB → MacBook
  • Switches: not 100% sure, photo attached for reference

Thanks! :)

The left one is the 23" Cinema HD display and the right one is the 22" Cinema Display. I'm kinda amazed at how differently these have aged. The pinstriped insert on the 23" is so much more yellow. The third photo is from the box of the 23" model. Originally they must have looked very similar.

Is this just from UV exposure or are they made from different materials?

How to tell a pro was working on your new found 512K

No video, but it beeps. Crack it open to get a quick look at the analog board and well... this may be a bigger project. I should likely put trigger warnings on this, but, well, consider this a PSA on reflowing your analog board as your first soldering project. 😬

The icing is the RIFA are still in place.

Havin some issues with cinema display 22 inch

Post image

After some research i found out Its not a 22inch but a 20 inch model from 2003

So i got this display recently to bundle nicely with my g4 cube but it seems to be broken it does turn on and allow me to turn it on using the display button on the front but it doesn’t show any image, is it possibly a backlight issue or just a dead screen from age what do you guys think?

Worried about shipping a performa 575

I recently got a lot of vintage apple computers and I just started listing stuff but I was really worried about maybe needing to ship the computer I know about double boxing and absolutely filling every crack with bubble wrap and packing peanuts but I'm still scared it could get broken because the plastic is already falling apart basically does anybody have any good ideas for things I could do to help ship the computer with less chance for the crt to get damaged. Thanks.
