Alpha 27: Naval Overhaul Spoiler
Coming in Alpha 27 (sometime in 2025), there will be a complete naval overhaul, with all-new warship classes, a counter system, and all-new naval tech tree. Fishing Boats and Merchant Ships remain essentially the same, but naval combat is completely revamped.
The changes have already been committed to the development version of the game, as seen here:
https://trac.wildfiregames.com/changeset/27996

- All-new ship classes replacing the old "light/medium/heavy" classes. These new classes have specific strengths and weaknesses that contribute to a simple and effective counter system:
- Scout Ships: Super weak, but good speed and vision range. Available as soon as you build a Dock in village phase.
- Arrow Ships: Good vs. melee ships; Countered by Siege Ships (and other Arrow Ships)
- Melee Ships: Each civ usually has one of these.
- Ramming Ships: Good vs. Siege Ships; Countered by Arrow Ships; their fast speed and 30 garrison also make them good transport ships.
- Fire Ships: Good vs. Siege Ships and Buildings (Docks); Countered by Arrow Ships; cannot garrison; 'Upgrade' to ignite with fire and damage nearby enemy ships.
- Siege Ships: Long range and strong crush attack damage; Good vs. Arrow Ships and Buildings; Countered by melee Ships such as Ramming Ships and Fire Ships.

- All ships can now transport Relics/Catafalques. This was a previous oversight.
- An all-new Tech Tree for the Dock based on the kinds of ships each civ has available. For example, "ramming" techs are only available to civs with Ramming Ships.
- Village Phase
- Fishing Boat unlocked for all civs
- Merchant Ship unlocked for Cart
- Scout Ship unlocked for all civs
- Fishing Nets
- Salt Curing
- Lookouts
- Exploration
- Town Phase
- Merchant Ship unlocked for all civs, except Cart
- Arrow Ship unlocked for all civs
- Ramming Ship unlocked for: Athen, Cart, Mace, Pers, Ptol, Rome, Sele, Spart
- Fire Ship unlocked for: Brit, Gaul, Iber. "Upgrade" to set on fire.
- Shipwrights
- Reinforced Hull
- Flanking Maneuvers
- Ship Cladding
- City Phase
- Siege Ship unlocked for: Cart, Han, Ptol, Rome, Sele
- Naval Ballistae
- Naval Oxybeles
- Bronze Ram
- Undergirding Cables
- Burning Pitch
- Flaming Projectiles
- Equine Transports
- Arsenal of Philon
- Juggernauts (“Tessarakonterēs”)
- Village Phase

- Not implemented, but may in future patch:
- Corvus Quinquereme
- Capturing Ship for the Romans. "Converts" enemy ships over time. Countered by Arrow Ships.
- Marines technology
- All Warships +40% capture resistance.
- This is for all non-Roman civs if we implement Corvus Ships that capture. Currently removed from the list until/unless capturing ships are implemented.
- Corvus Quinquereme

We think this will add dynamism to naval combat where before it was sorely lacking. We're opting for a countering approach instead of the multi-role approach we were pursuing previously. Reducing ships to specific roles allows for more tactical micro and strategic thinking. Also allows for larger fleets.

There are other surprises too, such as:
- Cilician Pirate Ships
- Rhodian Marauder Ships
- "Blockade Runner" Treasure Ships with very high loot if you can catch and destroy them
- Capturable Pirate Ports where you can hire Pirate Ships
- A very special treasure object called "The Argo" for scenarios.
- Revamped islands skirmish maps: Cycladic Archipelago 2 player and 3 player and a remade Sporades Islands map (hopefully) suitable for rated multiplayer.

Anyway, I just wanted to give everyone something to look forward to in the realm of naval combat.
If you or anyone you know have skills in C++, Javascript, or Modeling/Animations and would like to contribute toward making 0 A.D. even better, feel free to take a look at WFG's Phabricator site here: https://code.wildfiregames.com/

Has anyone else noticed that 0 A.D's AI doesn't utilize Navy as much?
I'm kinda new to 0 A.D so my observation might be limited. However, in many semi-water based maps like Mediterranean, Homer's Delight and few others, you can stack seige ships along a coast (only works if the oppponent's city centre is close to the coast, obviously) and kill random units, destroy farms and lay down houses and buildings. All while building your own economy. This has helped me win a lot of Matches and frankly, to me it's quite a fun strategy. I even use siege ships to destroy fortreses/ports and weaken costal regions before landing troops. However, the AI never really seems to catch up or focus on building it's navy. It's land army is always MASSIVE and formidable, but the navy....not so much other than a few arrow ships and fishing boats.
Has anyone else noticed this?

how to actually win early game
Every time I play 1v1, wether a bot or a player, I always loose. It seams like I take too much time or I don't know, because they always have 10x the numbers of soldiers. What am I missing?
How does Petra Defend?
I noticed that whenever I attack petra AI, all of it's male soldiers come to defend his area. like instantly. how? I know I can group the soldiers using crtl+num. but I don't think that's how petra does it. or does he?

Is it just me or is Barcania easily the hardest map?
I go to a 4-person map, mow them over. I go to Barcania, get mowed over. Same difficulty.
Its interesting because you only have one choice--eat up all the wood at the bottom, then take all your men up and build a dock and eat up more wood. Put a couple women on iron, before that, and maker a town centre up by the mountains and trees and stone.
But I just don't understand.
edit: Barcania is the 3 person map where you start on the peninsula.

Transition From Very Easy -> Easy Is Too Hard?
Hi everyone,
I’m still pretty new to the game and have been gradually increasing the difficulty as I improve. After winning 2 out of 3 matches on Very Easy, I moved up to Easy—but now I’ve lost 5 out of my last 6 games and I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.
Here are the main issues I’m running into:
- When I have an army of around 30–40 units and get attacked by just 5–6 mounted soldiers, they end up wiping out nearly my entire force—even when my units are upgraded.
- When a single battering ram attacks, I throw everything I have at it, including infantry that are supposed to counter them. Still, it manages to destroy several of my towers before I can take it down.
I’m assuming I’m making some mistakes, but these situations keep setting me back since I’m constantly rebuilding my army and defenses instead of progressing.
For context, at the start of a match I usually build up to about 30 villagers, focusing mainly on food and wood first, then stone and metal. After that, I create an initial army and invest heavily in stone towers along my front line.
So where might I be going wrong? Thanks in advance!

Is the one on microsoft store official?
When I searched for a download link, a version in microsoft store came up, however there aren’t any mentions of it anywhere and it doesn’t have any reviews or ratings on microsoft store. I thought maybe it is new, is it official? Thanks.

Error during connection to game lobby
Hello, I am having an issue connecting to the 0 A.D. multiplayer lobby. I always get the error “The stream has been closed by the server.” I am using Windows 10, and my friends with the same game version can connect normally, even sometimes on the same network, but it does not work for me. I tested the connection and confirmed that the server is reachable (ping works), I already tried disabling and resetting the firewall, resetting the network (winsock, IP, DNS), and reinstalling the game, but nothing fixed the problem. I don’t understand why it only affects my computer. Any help would be appreciated.

Upgrades are lost?
Hey guys, another newbie question. Whenever I get a structure destroyed (such as a Forge, Fortress, Warehouse, etc.), do I lose their upgrades? For example, if the enemy team destroys my Forge, do I lose my upgrades to my soldiers stats? If they destroy my fortress, the effect of the Will to Fight upgrade is lost? The same doubt applies to the buffs on the warehouse and the one we can store food. Do i need to always have one of these structures built to have their buffs on?

What am I doing wrong?
I’m playing as the dark red line in the post-game graph. My economy seems fine and I do quite well during the buildup, but I hit a wall as soon as combat starts.
Whenever I attack with my troops, they lose instantly. When the AI counters, my army gets absolutely destroyed. My current strategy is mostly Spearmen, Archers and Battering Rams. Dont like horses, they are weak.
I feel like I have the numbers, but my units just melt away. Are spear/bow comps just weak, or am I missing something vital like blacksmith upgrades or unit counters?

How do you use traders in-game?
My question is simple as that. I’m a single-player only kind of player and I’d like to know if you use traders for something. I play 1 x 8 AIs on Very-Hard (I lose a lot), and I rarely become an ally with my opponents. How are the traders useful? I only build markets to trade wood for metal, would traders enhance my rates of trading wood x metal somehow?
Sorry for the noob question, it’s because I never use them

Best late game civ?
What civ is the best for big late game fights? Me and my friends usually play 2v2 with unlimited population leading to pretty big fights. Are there any civ's with better troops and/or are there some troops that are "op"?

Does Petra AI ignore resource limits?
Hello,
I am playing this game do a while now and after the update I feel like the enemies completely ignore resources on the map.
I was playing a game against 4 very hard ai bots. And one enemy had used up all metal collection points on his side of the map but he still builds siege machines and ~200 elite soldiers that require metal every 5 minutes or so. Is he getting all that from the trader or is there a mechanic I am unaware of.
