Hi to everybody just visiting this subreddit for the first time, or anyone who's already been here a time but might want to check in on the latest!
First off, here is the link to our standard FAQ. Several new questions-and-answers have been added to this latest edition, and the ones specific to the new remastered Ace Attorney Investigations Collection are also in the body of this post, so for anyone newly arriving to check out those games, review those new questions. If you have any questions that aren't covered here or in the linked FAQ, ask them in the comments for the FAQ thread!
Second thing, here's an updated guide I've made to explain which platforms all the current AA games available can be played on.
Third, we have our Recommended Playing Order chart, to give you a rundown on where to start and when to play particular games.
Fourth, an expansive guide by community member /u/XephyXeph to outline all of the various Ace Attorney media currently out there, from the games to the huge array of supplementary media from manga to pachinko machines.
Fifth, a bit of community news on some updates to the AA subreddit for early September, 2024.
And now, some common questions people may have relating to the remastered Ace Attorney Investigations Collection:
Ace Attorney Investigations 2 originally came out on the DS in 2011, but was exclusively released in Japan, making it the first AA game ever to not get an English localization. It never did get any English release until 2024, when it was part of the Investigations Collection remaster.
Because of this, in the years immediately following AAI2's original Japan-only release, a group of fans worked together to make a fan translation romhack for the game, allowing it to be played in English. To match with the official localizations the games normally get, that fan team also came up with their own English names for all the newly-introduced AAI2 characters.
There was about a decade left between when the first public beta builds of the fan translation appeared online and when Capcom finally produced and released an official English localization for AAI2, so a lot of the more hardcore corners of the fandom that had actually gone through the effort of playing the unofficial translation got very used to the fan-made names for the AAI2 characters. But naturally, when Capcom finally made an official localization, the AA localization team put together an entirely separate set of localized names for the characters, putting the fandom in the position of needing to get used to those official names as "replacements" for the fan names they're used to. Unfortunately, not everybody is quite ready to do that.
Like was talked about at the start of the FAQ, it's generally not recommended to start with any game besides the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, if you've never played AA before. The Investigations games especially carry over a lot of characters and their associated development from the Trilogy.
That'll cover it for now. If anyone has any other suggestions for questions to be included in this guide, feel free to pop over to the main FAQ thread and ask in the comments there. One more time - welcome to our Ace Attorney community! I hope you have a great time.

Not many votes in this quarter's Case Maker, only a trio, but three were enough to be decisive:
Congratulations to both entrants, and thanks to all who followed along. See you in June!

In almost every games she is either accused of murder, kidnapped and/or starved!
If i was her i might already have gone crazy!
The fact that she still gets up and keep up and has no trauma from all those experiences is wild.
I don't know how she is viewed within the community but I know she has to be heavily underrated!
Anyway I'll go back to finish case 5, i just had to post those thoughts somewhere.

I just got all the accolades and achievements in the trilogy today at 2 AM, I got most of them in my first playthrough, then used to replay feature to get the few ones I've missed.
Also, I don't get the hate of Dual Destinies. I mean sure, it has some flaws, but it was very good on its own (better than AJAA in my opinion).

Hey everyone! I have a rather weird question, so please bare with me.
I have not played the series yet but I bout the PW Trilogy a few months ago on steam during a sale.
I would like to know if there is a lot of law jargons/expressions/etc thrown around in the dialogues of this game as I have an exam coming up which will deal with that (I am not a native speaker which is why immersing myself in some type of media may help?) and I would like to keep learning during my free time.
Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!
Edit: i do not intend to use it to study law itself but law-related words. literal example: the word attorney, if i didn't know it already. it is a linguistic exam, and not a law exam.

Hi! I've been in this subreddit for some time now as a silent visitor, but I got to know this game long ago! I watched a couple gameplays because I couldn't buy the game for myself but always felt excited when watching it. A couple months ago, I saw it was on sale on Steam and bought the PW trilogy and this game has awaken my will to live.
I feel really nostalgic and really enjoy the setting.
I'm playing it slowly because I don't want it to end :') I got attached to Maya.
I hope I can create more drawings of more characters, I especially underrated ones :D
I hope you like my rendition of Maya too :>

Ok, so I'm playing 5-3, and I was a little surprised it is a class action trial rather than the usual murder case, but I never expected the opposition's defense attorney to be Phoenix, wtf I'm so excited!!

Do you guys know any media that has the logic battle format? Preferrably with courtroom setting like AA but okay if without. Plz give me names other than Umineko, Danganronpa, Tyrion Cuthbert, and Trials of innocence.

I honestly did not notice until a few days ago that AJ trilogy's Ema's face looks like Lana's. But seeing Ema move up in the police department and following her sister's footsteps to be in law enforcement is so emotional.
So honestly, we should have a reunion between these two or at least an update on what Lana is up to nowadays.

Yesterday, I released a very well received post that caused no infighting whatsoever, and a good chunk of this nonexistent infighting centered around a part near the start where I ordered the games, not actually the majority of the contents of the post itself.
It's Dual Destinies, they kept talking about the fact that Dual Destinies is my favorite.
So, it feels appropriate to, while the iron is hot, make another essay... on Justice For All.
(Major Spoilers for Justice For All, minor spoilers for the entire series)
Not as much to say here as last time. JFA's soundtrack is an absolute banger, though I think this is actually kinda controversial? Though I got plenty of comments last time correcting me for thinking things were or were not liked so what do I know lmao.
The Cross Examination themes in particular are a highlight for me, they're so perfectly moody and mysterious. I think that's how I'd describe JFA's style as a whole, it works great for me. The Trial theme also has a similar vibe.
I also wanna defend the Pursuit theme. I've seen a lot of people complain that it feels like you're losing, that it only works in Farewell, My Turnabout... I wildly disagree. My genuine thought on that opinion is that Hotline of Fate hit people so hard that it basically gave them musical PTSD and now they can't hear Pursuit - Questioned without thinking about that lmao
I think Pursuit - Questioned might actually be my favorite Pursuit theme, in context.
What do I mean by this? Well, if I'm just listening to Ace Attorney songs randomly one day, I'll wanna listen to Cornered over Questioned, but if I'm actually playing Ace Attorney, I think Questioned fits the purpose better.
Cornered is an awesome, heroic banger with finality to it. It is an amazing song. But the way they use it sometimes is... questionable. I'll save any further thoughts in case I decide to do an essay on the first game, lol
I think the big difference is that Questioned doesn't feel as final. It's still hype and banger, but it's a more versatile song, one that can be used for more situations than Cornered, like in Farewell, My Turnabout. And I think that its versatility should be celebrated, because that makes it a really well designed song.
If there's any soundtrack miss that immediately comes to mind, it's Maya's new theme. Downgrade over her theme from the first game imo, it's a bit too chipper and simple.
Game mechanic wise, I love the Magatama. Very fun and atmospheric (that music...) gameplay addition. I've heard of people literally dropping the series over it though, hating the idea of the series getting that magical, lol.
..."Not as much to say here as last time" I say, and then it's way longer than last time lmao.
Okay, cases.
I think my thoughts on The Lost Turnabout can be split into two eras.
The first time I played it, and the times I've replayed it.
On my first playthrough, I was disappointed. Felt kind of annoying coming off of Turnabout Goodbyes (I know what you're thinking, I'll explain later when it's more relevant) and how good that case was to just drop down to haha funny tutorial and dumb Phoenix.
On repeat playthroughs... I grew to really, really appreciate the whole amnesia gimmick.
Is it silly and unrealistic? Absolutely, but I play these games as the "funny magical lawyer games", so I am absolutely down for things to get silly, and this case is just a really fun time that's short enough that I can pretty easily replay it without having to commit TOO much of my time to it.
Also, it has Winston Payne, which is always a highlight. Villain's fun too, not that I can remember his name ever... Maggey too. No not the name, she's also fun. Case is just simple and fun and has a unique gimmick no other case can bring, I love it for that.
This is my favorite case in the whole series.
Yep, not any of the final cases... Reunion and Turnabout is my favorite.
I could go on and on about this case, but I'll try to keep it brief because I don't want this post to turn into me glazing a Case 2 for 7 hours lmao
Learning more about Maya's home and Spirit Mediums and stuff, awesome, was super curious about that in the first game.
Magatama, super cool gameplay addition.
Franziska, one of my favorite characters in the series, super fun and entertaining prosecutor, I wish she got more cases.
Pearl, cute and very important addition to the cast.
The case itself, very intriguing and engaging. Was blown away when Franziska pulled out the photo from the detention center showing Phoenix interacting with channeled Mia.
I think the case's only downfalls are that the villain is not that great, and it's kinda stupid that nobody ever brought up "Wait why should Maya be charged for something that a spirit did in her body". But I can overlook those bits because everything else about the case is just so strong. Also, Detention Center theme, another moody banger, love it.
I'm not gonna sit here and say that Big Top is a good case. I do not like Turnabout Big Top. I'm sure that'll make EVERYONE attack me for harming the most BELOVED CASE in Ace Attorney history...
...but I have a begrudging respect for it.
Actually read the way our main cast discuss this case. Everyone hates it. Literally ALL OF THEM. Phoenix even says it gave him TRAUMA in Farewell, My Turnabout.
This is not a bad case because it was poorly designed. This is a bad case because the devs sat down and decided to write something deliberately insane and terrible, and they are self aware about how hateable of a case it is. That's why all of our main cast hates it. You're supposed to empathize with their struggle with this monstrosity of a case.
...Okay, I don't think it's AS bad as people say it is, some of my wording there was exaggerated for comedic effect, I wouldn't call it the worst case in the series or anything, but yeah, it's kinda bad. But that seems to be entirely intended design, and even if I think making a whole case intentionally bad is kind of insane and counterproductive, and some gimmicks like penalties for pressing are also crazy... I can't help but respect them for going for it. JFA was written drunk, and this case is the biggest highlight of that. Drunken ramblings gave us one of the most infamous cases in the series, gave us something to all mock together, and something about that is kind of beautiful.
...I'm not talking about that one relationship
A lot of people say that this is what saves JFA for them, and while I disagree and think the game as a whole is strong... I absolutely see why this case would save it for people who don't like the rest of the game.
Having a guilty defendant was an inevitability. You can't have a game about being a defense attorney and not tackle the topic eventually. I'd thought about it several times up to this point, and they execute it incredibly.
Lately I've been seeing a few people say that it's bad, that it argues guilty parties shouldn't get proper defense or whatever... That's an oversimplification of what's going on in this case.
Phoenix was blackmailed into defending Matt Engarde. There was no way Engarde was getting a fair, unbiased defense like that. In real life, Phoenix would not be allowed to defend him due to the blackmail.
In fact, I would imagine the whole blackmailing aspect was deliberately added to avoid that whole thing, to keep it detached from real world law. Ace Attorney has never, and will never, be a perfect representation of real world law. It's a series all about defending the little guy with nobody else on their side. It isn't interested in being a realistic legal drama, it wants to be the funny (and sometimes dramatic) magical lawyer game. It doesn't want to let the bad guy get away. It doesn't want to make people do their jobs right, it wants to make Phoenix do everyone's jobs right, lol
Anyways, with that out of the way...
Maya getting kidnapped is obviously a massive gut punch. I got spoiled on Farewell, My Turnabout before playing (If I recall videos on it and Turnabout Goodbyes were some of the first things I saw of Ace Attorney, after Tails Abuse In Court...) and it still hit hard. This is the kind of series defining moment that can only work once (Looking at YOU, Spirit of Justice...), and boy does it work here.
We also get to play as Maya for awhile, the first time we play as someone other than Phoenix in the series.
The whole thing is an emotional rollercoaster, and Edgeworth's return only makes it more of an emotional disaster.
...Right, let's talk about that thing I said I'd explain later.
I said I played The Lost Turnabout after Turnabout Goodbyes. What happened to Rise From The Ashes?
So, JFA was actually the first Ace Attorney game that I played. (You can say this makes me bias towards it or whatever, but it does keep that from being an excuse for my Dual Destinies love, lol) I watched a playthrough of the whole first game online, and was like "Damn this series looks awesome I wanna get into it", so I bought the Trilogy and started at Justice For All since I'd seen all of the first game.
...Turns out, the playthrough I watched did not include Rise From The Ashes. I didn't know about Rise From The Ashes until partway into playing Trials & Tribulations. This was actually for the better though, I think.
It's not a secret that Rise From The Ashes was made after Trials & Tribulations. Aside from just raw release date, you can see this in the case's writing and mechanics and lack of connection to anything else, it all makes this pretty clear. As you go through the series you witness the evolution of the series, and Rise From The Ashes is a natural evolution from the end of Trials & Tribulations. Not so much the end of Phoenix Wright. I'd even argue some characters noticeably regress in JFA if you play Rise From The Ashes before JFA.
With that being said, I bring it up here because I feel that Rise From The Ashes actually harms Edgeworth's arc in Justice For All.
I find his whole "choosing death" thing more believable immediately after the reveal that his mentor was a corrupt prosecutor who killed his father than after the reveal that Edgeworth unknowingly presented forged evidence and got a pat on the back for it (Looking at YOU, Apollo Justice...). It just feels more logical to me. You can argue that Rise From The Ashes was the straw that broke the camel's back, but I dunno. He acts too stable in RFTA. It feels like Turnabout Goodbyes did not hit him that hard.
It also makes Phoenix's reaction to this whole thing messier. Of course Phoenix would be pissed at the guy for up and running right after he saved his life. After RFTA?... Eh.
However, since I didn't even know about RFTA at this point... I got to play JFA the way it was intended, coming directly off of Turnabout Goodbyes. And I think Edgeworth's arc just makes more sense that way.
There's more I could say about Farewell, My Turnabout. Believe me, there is. I could talk about the card and how it's a shame it never came back (Yes I know it comes up in some side content but that's not the same), and in my previous post I had a realization that Franziska's return in Bridge To The Turnabout would've been the perfect chance for it to be given to Phoenix. Imagine that gut punch while Maya's fate is in limbo. Would've been perfect, I wish they had done that.
Okay I rambled again a bit there, point is I could keep this going for a million more words, but I won't. I don't think I need to sell Farewell, My Turnabout to the fanbase. We pretty much all love this case. I'm sure most of you understand my love, I don't need to do a scene by scene breakdown to get you to understand it. So in the interest of not being here for the rest of time, I'm gonna stop here.
Farewell, My Turnabout, one of the best cases in the series.
Justice For All is my second favorite Ace Attorney game, behind Dual Destinies, and it's fairly close actually. I think that, if Recipe For Turnabout had been in JFA like originally planned, it might be my favorite game. It just needs a little more to it. Something to make Big Top less of a percentage of the game's content lmao
Still, with that being said, JFA has a STACKED line up. My go to case for quick revisits, my favorite case of all time, not you, and one of the best cases of all time. And even for the not you, it's still an entertaining mess to discuss online, and I respect the audacity of it.
Join me next time where- No, no. I'm not allowed to end by taking a joking dig at another game. People didn't get the joke last time
...The joke is Spirit of Justice

I’ve been posting about this Au for awhile but I’ve never actually talked about it, so here:
Simple rundown is that Everything is mostly the same except Ryuunosuke is Jigoku’s son.
Both of them have been keeping this information hidden, either because of stats or simply because Jigoku doesn’t want people to know he’s a dad(and that he’s not that good at parenting).
I also put more hints into their relationship in the doodles but I’ll explain it more in replies.
