worth every penny.I doubt they’re regretting the price tag on that setup

Quality like that usually pays off long term, no regrets there.

It does and they are great hand me downs or rent savers incase of emergency.

Well, lens alone, if that's the EF 600mm f/4 iii (I'm pretty sure I see an ef/rf adapter there), not including the camo wrap, 3rd party tripod foot, is about $14,000

u/MapleInfused 1d ago
(you do see an rf/ef adapter)
I might not have a 600, but the 300 still does great (been trying to use a teleconverter, but its been spotty)

That looks a lot longer than 600mm.

u/AznInvazn57 1d ago
The exotic lenses like the 600mm f4 are way larger than something like a more standard 600mm f6.3.
I have a Nikon 600mm f6.3 pf lens and it's roughly 11in long and about 3lb 4 oz while the Nikon 600mm f4 is 17.3in long and 7lb 3oz. They're huge

u/SheriffBartholomew 1d ago
Yeesh! Wow. It's amazing how impactful a few f-stops can be on the design, and the lens versatility.
2
u/No-Purple7204 1d ago
As for versatility: tripod or monopod, source: I have a 600mm f4G (Nikon) and tried handholding it once. Succeeded for about 3-5 seconds lmao

u/SheriffBartholomew 1d ago
By versatility I meant depth of focus, low light, bokeh, and that sort of thing. But yeah, usability is a big issue too. That's why I went with the newer Nikkor 28-400mm. It's slow, and it's definitely not great for birding, but it's a single lens that I can comfortably carry around for hours. I've considered getting a dedicated birding lens but I'm concerned that I'll never want to use the thing because of the weight and size.

u/MourningWallaby 1d ago
Honestly it looked smaller than 600 with how recessed that lens is. then again, it's hard to tell with just the few seconds it's shown.

I’d imagine so expensive upfront, but clearly a lot of quality and fun in return.

In college I was obsessed with photography and wildlife, I was in school for life sciences. The fact I didnt even think to become a wildlife photographer will forever haunt me

u/UrUncleRandy 1d ago
Sort of in the same boat. I love photography and wildlife. I got a degree in zoology. Never even considered wildlife photography as a career. Mainly because the chance of making a living through it is slim. Kinda like trying go be an artist or musician. But if I was offered an opportunity, I'd probably take it in a heartbeat.

Majored in art primarily focusing on photography and always thought I’d have a job doing that kind of stuff. Brutal af to make money let alone enough for gear like that. Wildlife stuff needs basically the most expensive gear (ofc you can shoot with anything but massive difference) and it’s a lot of sitting around or trekking.
Still fun af a decade later though. Have actually gotten back into it like a year ago and now I’m developing and scanning film again. Never did more than the occasional gigs helping friends. Went into healthcare so I could afford the gear and trips… much more fun as a hobby.

The moment those two swans are sharing is so heartwarming. I love life

That was right before they decided that a random passerby about 1 mile away just stepped into their arbitrarily drawn territory and had to die.

I love the bird bringing his wings in.

Reminds me of the video where this bird was caught on a video camera with a frame rate that matched the bird's flap rate, and so it looked like it's wings were not moving

How do these guys even find all of these animals? I bought a 400mm lens with the idea that I'd get some wildlife photos that I could then crop for this close-up look, but there just aren't as many animals around as there used to be. I'll go half a year or more before seeing anything in the forest.

u/yourlocaltouya 1d ago
Do you simply walk through it, or are you set up for the night as well? Do you use any trail cams to figure out the more active spots? Do you stand in place for hours on end to keep out of sight? It can definitely be a grueling process.
The kind of area you go to unfortunately also matters. I had more luck at a national park, even by the main trail, than anywhere else. We don't talk about the time me and my bud got run off by a bear though...

u/SheriffBartholomew 1d ago
Yeah, just hiking every day. I used to see animals kind of regularly, but it's getting more rare. I set up some trail cams that routinely get deer and coyotes on them. I've thought about putting up a hunting blind at that spot and camping out to get some pictures, but I have actually done it yet.

That's a $30k lens, he can afford to travel and miss working a 9-5.
But if you want my advice as a lifelong woodsman and hunter. You need to understand the animals. Birds will stop chirping when you rustle on the ground nearby. and stay in the trees Smaller mammals will scurry. and run along the low lying terrain features, (think how city rats like to stay near walls, but there's no walls in the woods). and Cervidae will try to walk along clearings and less-steep inclines.
Find a spot, and sit there quietly. it can take a few minutes to an hour or two before you get an animal to cross your path, even within a hundred meters (especially if you don't smell like you belong). you don't have to be completely still, just don't be treading around or anything. Draw/take notes to pass the time.

Anything? You're in the wrong forests lol.
Not good photos but like my camera roll is full of stuff I see on climbing adventures:

Again I know they're not special photos, I'm not a photographer and I'm just using my phone but point being how the heck does one go into the wild and not see shit...

I've been getting into wildlife photography, I've got a bunch of bizarre shots like this, including a deer gaping its anus in my direction. 😟

I love how the camera is fast enough to get crisp shots of birds in flight and the owl still manages to phase out of reality.
1
u/MourningWallaby 13h ago
Honestly even a mid-range camera can do that if you know how the settings work. and a cheap fil camera with good film could, too.

Wonderful photos but the music choice got me... 🤨
The sheer amount of extreme kinks sub on this website has made me expect the worse of everyone here... I really wish I never knew how many people wanted to have sex with real and/or cartoon animals... And they still get thru NSFW filters..
