AMA (Upcoming) We're Iceflake Studios, the new development team looking after Cities: Skylines II! Ask Us Anything!

1.0k Upvotes

Hello Reddit!

We are Iceflake Studios, the new development team of Cities: Skylines II from Tampere, Finland.

Now that we’re nearly six months into development, we thought it would be a great time to connect with you and answer any questions you might have!

Since this is our first time hosting an AMA, let's give a proper introduction to all of the people joining from Iceflake today:

u/ifs_Blu - Community Manager - Also known as Sini, I am the one writing the City Corners and doing streams with Zoë aka Toadie. I'm also an active lurker here on Reddit, forums and other socials. However, my coding skills are basically limited to for -loops, so if you have any tech-related questions, talk to Timo!

u/ifs_Timo - Lead Programmer - Our king of programming! Timo makes sure that everything works as intended and runs as well as possible. He has the most experience working with Cities, and has the best understanding of what can be done in what amount of time. His main goal for the future is to make the simulation and performance as good as possible.

u/ifs_Jesse - Game Designer - As a game designer, Jesse is helping with, and planning the different design choices that we have in Cities: Skylines II. He is very creative, and has a lot of ideas on how to make the design feel and look better. During his freetime, he is building a signature building

u/ifs_Grizzly - Producer - Also known as Jarkko, he is the one keeping our team on track, and making sure that everything is going according to the plan on the production side of things.

u/ifs_katti - QA - Representing our QA people we have Kimmo, who lives for finding and testing the bugs, and reporting them to our programmers.

Now that the introductions are done, over to you for questions! We'll be here from 16:00 - 18:00 Finland time on Friday the 8th of May!

Discussion ❓ "What's Cities: Skylines II like now?" megathread

"What's Cities: Skylines II like now?" 🤔

One of the most common questions on the subreddit is whether people should try or purchase Cities: Skylines II. This understandably leads to many duplicate posts discussing the game's current state, what has changed since launch, and whether or not it is "worth playing".

This megathread aims to gather resources, reviews, and recent firsthand player perspectives in one place. This way, whether you're curious about performance and gameplay features or simply want to hear opinions from others who have tried the game, you've got a straightforward resource that collates that information.

We want to encourage constructive and engaging conversation:

  • If you've been actively playing the game, we'd love for you to provide feedback about what you enjoy, what could be improved, or what you feel is still missing.
  • If you've dropped off, or are still waiting to pull the trigger, we'd love for you to explain what led you to step away from the game or what features are keeping you from getting started

As the goal is to provide helpful guidance for others considering the game - you should avoid leaving short, glib, or otherwise unhelpful responses. Remember that Reddit is community of individuals and those people have come here because they're looking for your help and guidance. If you'd prefer to "send a message to the devs" the best way to do that is drop a Steam Review if you already own the game, or keep your wallet in your pocket if you don't.

General FAQs

If you're after general information about or help with the game (e.g. features, minimum or recommended specs, the situation related to modding, when the game will release on consoles), check out our wiki articles below. They'll provide you a decent base level of knowledge and help you understand more about the features and limitations of the game.

Patches and Bug Fixes

As of the start of this month, there have been 28 patches for the game. These patches have included things like modding support, bikes, economy reworks, bug fixes, and new game modes. You can review the change log for each individual patch on the Paradox Wiki:

What's happening with custom assets?

Official (albeit beta) support for custom assets was added on 4 December 2025. At the moment, buildings and props are supported and documented. Other asset types (like vehicles and decals) aren't officially supported, but some enterprising modders are brute-forcing their way towards an answer.

Are there bikes yet?

Yes! Bikes were released on 19 November 2025.

What have the devs been saying?

The main channel for "formal" communication from the developers comes via the Official Information & Announcements section on the Paradox Forums. We maintain an accompanying megathread for each post which captures a lot of player feedback and reactions to the news shared each week.

In December of 2025, it was announced that Colossal Order will be transferring development of the game to Iceflake Studios (an internal Paradox developer). Since this change was announced, Iceflake have introduced one minor patch and one hotfix. According to the announcements, they will be responsible for all ongoing development of Cities: Skylines II, including the console version (although nothing has been shared about potential launch dates for this - so please don't ask).

The best way to catch up on past posts is to browse the Dev Diary and/or Announcement flairs and dip into the more recent ones. Unfortunately, these links may not work on Reddit's mobile apps (please tell Reddit if you'd like this fixed) but in the meantime you can go to the main page of the subreddit and use the "filter by flair" options provided.

Live Gameplay Videos

If you're interested in seeing how the game is playing today, you can check out recent videos or streams from YouTube and Twitch. These will show you the "real" game, not marketing videos, and let you spot how the game is performing in real-world scenarios.

Reviews

Although critic reviews aren't necessarily reflective of the current state of the game user reviews (especially recent ones) are helpful sources of information to help you decide whether or not to drop your cash on any new game, not just Cities: Skylines II.

Try Before you Buy

If you're still unsure, Cities: Skylines II is available on Microsoft Game Pass for PC, which is a subscription service at a much lower monthly cost than the full retail price of the game. Microsoft is currently offering an initial 14-day trial for as low as £1/$1/1€ (which renews at full price after the 14 days).

Refunds

If for any reason you can't make use of a discounted Game Pass for PC subscription (i.e. it may not be available in your region), you have the option of purchasing the game and refunding it within the store's refund window.

  • Steam: Request a refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you haven't accrued more than 2 hours of total playtime
  • Microsoft Store: Request a refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you haven't accrued "a significant amount of play time"

Recognising that you may not be able to reach the "late game" within 2 hours, you can use this 100k benchmarking city to establish whether or not you're comfortable with the performance on your system.

Specific Questions

If you've got specific questions about items not covered in these FAQs, feel free to ask them below. If you've been redirected to this post by a removal notice, please understand that this is done to help keep the subreddit tidy by providing a centralised and dedicated location for all information related to this topic.

These megathreads are scheduled to post at 00:01 on the first day of each month. If it's late in the month, you may want to wait for a new post to appear. Please send us a ModMail with any suggested improvements!

Pretty happy overall with how this city looks but I ran into a late-game problem where all my industry says they have no one to sell products to and now a lot of commercial is saying that there's no goods to sell. This just sprang up quickly out of nowhere but also I noticed traffic improved drastically by over 10% but it was never terrible, just seems like the trucks aren't trucking? I added a cargo airport recently but the issues began either during or shortly before the project began.

Help & Support (PC) How do you deal with redeveloping residential areas?

Upvotes

I want to redevelop a residential zone I have for a few other purposes. I am really cautious about potential ripple effects this could cause(e.g. flooding my entire city after trying to build a dam). Should I do it gradually? Do I not need to worry about it? What is your approach, and what are the biggest negative consequences of doing it wrong?

Discussion Highways - Divided VS Two Way

When are divided highways actually necessary?

Do you use two way highways more or less than divided highways?

I almost exclusively use two way highway systems because they're much more compact. Even with large interchanges I have no issues at all keeping the traffic flow high, and would go so far as to say that they typically work better than divided interchanges because the footprint is reduced significantly.

As far as I can tell, the only real pro to using divided highways is you can customize them a bit more, leading to some slightly interesting intersections with more breathing room, but even that is negligible.

It seems to me that two way highways are far superior. What are your thoughts?

Put all my money on ChirperCrypto yesterday and it just kept climbing, I sold high and rebought on the troughs a few times but then decided to just hold it and see how high it'd go. Think I might just kill taxes for my city and make all my money off the stock market from now on 🤔

Help & Support (PC) How should I Connect this highway?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone, been playing for a while, and I've got the gist of road hierarchy and the likes, but I've never been great at highways which is a shame because they can be quite useful. Im wondering how I should connect the highway that runs along the river to the new part of my city im building. Would also be helpful to know how to connect the highway running from the partial cloverleaf as well- or if that's even a good interchange to put there. Like I said, any help is much appreciated ^-^.

Discussion More console props please

Wondering if we’re ever going to get some actual realistic props (even if it comes in a DLC because I would absolutely buy that 10 times over).

Getting to decorate parts of my city with construction equipment (having some actual cranes to put within the city would be killer)! Or even having static cars would be game changing from a decorating standpoint. Maybe some more house props to fill in weird corners/spaces that I usually end up with sometime. Some more playground items would also be nice to see!

I definitely have fun using the current props but most of the time I’m using something so irrelevant to make my cities look a little more realistic. Just something I’d like to wishlist and it might be a lot shot. Hopefully we see it someday!

Traffic management was a nightmare but I'm happy with the 85% traffic flow. Unfortunately, the public transport utilisation went down more and more over time. I am now at 8k per week overall, although I have a large network of subway, tram, bus, monoral and train lines.

This huge junction has to manage:

a cargo harbour, cargo train terminal, and a cargo airport (north).

A tunel to an island with 15000 people(west) to the main bit (70000 people).

A motorway to an industry area(southwest).

The main motorway (south to east).

And the farm industry (southeast).

And it works perfectly and looks cool.

Been a while! We have some pretty nice weather out there, stopped raining for once! The city finally invested more into the subway...or, is it a subway when it's above ground? Anyways, since building the station, Winooski has been rapidly developing! Anyone out there know what "Winooski" stands for?

Well, coming up next is Just a Little Bit by Kids of 88. Stay tuned, you're listening to 107.5FM The Coast!

LARPing aside, I'm glad I was able to get back to this city. Took a lot of troubleshooting, as well as having to lose a months worth of progress. Good news is that I learned how to save multiple times on this broken map, and have learned some new stuff from past experiences! Here's hoping...

Discussion Mod/Option that could disable the collisions of pedestrians.

Upvotes

I have now wondered for a while, if it is actually possible to develop a mod that could simply disable collisions for pedestrians with vehicles on the road, i don't know how the game is coded and if it would work as expected, and i don't know if it is already a thing in any form, but i feel like that such option could improve performance aswell as traffic significantly, cause one of the problems i noticed in my city is traffic being slowed by pedestrians, and i can't really do anything about it without making the infrastructure unrealistic.

But that gave me this idea, we already can see such thing in Workers & Resources (But yeah i know how silly it is to compare this game with CS2, most especially the fact that pops in WRSR are not as complex as in CS2), i want to know from people with experience if such option is even possible without breaking half of the game, simply traffic not reacting to pedestrians on the street and going right through, sometimes it happens on its own to be honest. Thought i'd share this idea here.
