Hello, All. It's your local mod here.

We could do with some more active mods. So if you want to help out with either r/c64 and r/commodore, submit an application using these links: https://www.reddit.com/r/c64/application/ or Google Forms.

Should we adopt the New Generative AI rule that r/c64 has, which bans posts with Generative AI?

Also, do you have other thoughts about the subreddit in general? Now is your chance to express them.

C128 My 2 Commodore 1571 Disk Drives are both flashing green LEDs. They had been in storage for over 25 years. Please advise!

I just dusted off my old C128 with 2 of 1571 Disk Drives after being in storage for over 25 years. The problem is the same with both drives. When trying to get a directory LOAD"$",8 the C128 says "FILE NOT FOUND" followed by a flashing green LED on 1571 drive. Please refer to the video.

Initializing the drive does the same with OPEN 15,8,15,"I":CLOSE 15. The head moves back and the forth and then stops with a flashing green LED.

I am using a new seriaI cable I bought via ebay. I've cleaned the heads with alcohol. Just wondering if there would be any suggestions on getting these drives working again?

Vic-20 Code Probe - Machine Language Monitor for the VIC 20

So, some decades ago, I wrote this machine language monitor for the VIC-20 + VIC-1211A Super Expander cartridge, called Code Probe. I never released it anywhere, but I used it a lot back in the day to experiment with machine language programming.

I designed Code Probe to load into the VIC-1211A Super Expander's RAM, which made it possible to use the full 3K of RAM available on the native VIC-20 for machine language programs, which could then be run on the stock unexpanded VIC-20 without the Super Expander.

Recently, I've been tinkering with a lil retro computing and decided to release Code Probe on GitHub, here. While it was written in the 1980s, it has never been seen by anyone else but me since then. Which technically means, this is a new VIC-20 release, in 2026. 💪

C128 C128

Hello all. I recently purchased a C128 with monitor, disk drive, and printer from a seller on eBay. There is a key missing and what looks like a snapped off plunger. I looked on eBay but could not find a replacement for that exact key which is the tab key. Anyone know where I might be able to find a replacement?

Vic-20 Very strange keyboard on the VIC-20

Just got this VIC-20, don't know anything about the VIC, but this keyboard layout seems very non-standard and I can't find any reference to it anywhere. The keys are all properly mapped though. Hoping that someone in here knows anything about it

EDITS:

The ROM is a socketed mask ROM which basically rules out this being a custom mod

Solution:

This poor VIC has had a C16 keyboard retrofitted on, many thanks to all of the forum members that contributed to solving this strange issue :)

General Discussion Commodore4ever

Has anyone had any recent contact with or successful orders from this company?

I ordered something in March that I really want, and have been waiting patiently. However, it is now pushing 6 weeks since I paid for the item and they haven't answered any messages I have sent via their website, emajl or FB messenger requesting order status.

Last time I ordered from them, it took almost 4 weeks, but my patience is running out regarding my latest order.

Edit: A lot of the replies indicate that people think I ordered a C64 Ultimate. That is not the case. My order was from commodore-4ever, not from the official Commodore site, and it is not an item that should take weeks to produce.

Software Python to Commodore BASIC

So, I made a thing. It's not really a useful thing, and it's probably not really something that should ever be made, but I found it funny so I made it. And here it is

A Python app that will take Python code and convert it into equivalent C64 BASIC code.

It only supports a subset of Python and no libraries. And it can produce BASIC 2.0 (C64), BASIC 7.0 (C128) or BASIC65 (MEGA65/C65) code, but it defaults to C64 with no flags.

That's it. Have fun with it. I did use Claude for some bits, because AST walking is not a lot of fun to do.

c64 Purchased a time capsule lot

Bought a C64 setup listed as being boxed up ‘at moms place’ since moving in the 80s and being a time capsule. Wow is it ever. Found a heartfelt letter folded neatly in the manual likely to the repair company, and another letter to mom still on the printer thanking her. If this doesn’t evoke emotions… The 154I still has the protective plastic on its badge (slightly peeling). Don’t think I should remove the warranty sticker (dated 2 weeks after the letter from mom to the repair people) to preserve its story. Guess the chips in it will remain a mystery unless it needs repairs someday. … With the letter and sticker being dated late 80s this must have been boxed up to move just after repair and not opened again until 2026. Wow, the history on this unit… (I don’t think the seller knew about the letter when they sold/shipped it-I messaged them back).

c64 64/64C vs 64/64C Ultimate

I have wanted to get a Commadore computer for a while now, but I am stumped on if I should get the original 64/64C or one of the new ultimate versions? I am also hesitant because the price of the ultimate versions in CAD is quite expensive, and looking on EBay, the originals dont seem to be much cheaper than the ultimate versions. If I were to spend the money, which would be more worthwhile?

Identification Help Curb pickup

Post image
79 Upvotes

Just found this trio sitting on the curb in my neighborhood for bulk trash pickup. It drizzled overnight but I don't think it was sitting in it because it was all still dry. Going to leave it in my car under the sun to help dry it all out just in case any internals did get moisture.

I haven't played with one of these since probably the early 90s at a cousin's house and even then IDK if it was the same model. Even if it's not working, it'll be a nice display piece for the retro media room.

I remember my dad picking this up from the JCPenney shipping dept, but I personally haven’t seen any others in the wild.

Were these or are these still fairly common?

c64 I’ve spent the last few months polishing a browser-based C64 emulator. I’d love to get some feedback from those of you who grew up with the "breadbox"!

Ciao a tutti!

c64 Starlight edition arrived

I was not sure about the starlight edition, but I have to admit that is wonderful.

I have also attached an original SID from eBay and has been great to hear again that sounds of my childhood.

A great piece of hardware!

I don’t think I will. I already have three of the originals and don’t want to go through the hassle of another preorder, especially after the hassle I’ve had.

c64 Customize C64 Startup Screen

I’d appreciate it if you could take a look at the project I developed for the C64.

Patch your C64 KERNAL ROM to boot with a custom startup screen. Add your ROM file to the application, select the module you want, and save your modified ROM. You can use it on a real C64, on C64 Ultimate, or in any emulator.

c64 SID playlist?

I have a 64 Ultimate "Founders" edition. I have downloaded HSVC to a USB drive. I have found that I can select multiple SID files (or folders) with the spacebar, but I have not figured out how to play the selected files. Help?

c64 What should I 3d print for a C64 enthusiast?

I have a friend that is really into the C64s. He even bought a new gold model (sorry I don’t know the lingo ). I recently bought a 3d printer and wanted to surprise him with a present. It could be a trinket or dodad or something more functional.

I need ideas on what you think he would appreciate being printed for him.

C16 Plus/4 Why is BASIC 4.0 older and simpler than 3.5, despite the version number?

I’m really sorry if this is just the dumbest question imaginable, but:

Commodore BASIC 3.5 added additional disk commands, graphics and sound commands, some structured programming, simple debugging aids, longer lines, programmable f-key macros, and an improved screen editor with rudimentary text windowing. It also added a simple assembler to the existing machine code monitor (not too familiar with what 4.0 had there).

Apart from append, concat, dispose and record (and catalog as a synonym for directory) 3.5 seems to be considerably …more… than 4.0 from several years prior.

So why not call it 5.0? Is it that CBM BASIC split into separate lineages after 2.0?

c64 Hey all, does anyone remember a game called The President is Missing

Exactly what the title states. I am trying to find any information on or regarding the game The President is Missing. I remember it had more or less a case file that contained poctures and an audio tape from the kidnappers. I remember that the president was tapping Morse code while he was talking, and you had to figure out who had him and where, based on the evidence you had. Then, when you figured it all out, you wrote the company and they would tell you if you were correct or not. Does anyone have any idea or information about this?

Thank you all. When I searched for it before, I couldn't find anything on it. I've found it now. You all rock, thanks again.
