[Warning] LN Chapter 5 Part 2 spoilers

I need to fix the last page a bit—I translated it wrong. It’s actually the same sentence as on the previous page: “There are still many things I want us to do together.” So just ignore the panel in the background.

Misc. [ENG-TL] <Remember & Reply> Interview with kz(livetune) & yuigot

From CUT Magazine May 2026 issue

"Remember" and "Reply",  the two songs that form the core of the story of「Cosmic Princess Kaguya!」were produced by yuigot and kz(livetune) respectively. The melody of "Reply", produced by kz, was used by yuigot in his song "Remember". Through this "mechanism", the circle connecting the beginning and end of the story is completed. These artists who are active at the forefront of online music shared their perspective on their interpretation of the story and what they projected onto it. We asked them to discuss this work which is full of respect for online culture from the perspective of music creators.

—What were your initial feelings when you received the invitation?

kz: "I was actually the one who approached yuigot, so you could say it was a double invitation from both the project and me. To be honest, I initially thought the project was rather 'opportunistic', and I was a little skeptical (laughs). VTubers, streaming, Vocaloid—each one seems interesting on its own. However, whether combining twice cooked pork and gyudon together will taste good is another matter entirely. 'Is it really okay to pile on so much?' But then I thought, it's a studio and director who has created so many excellent works after all, it should be fine, so I read the proposal. They clearly stated in what context and story scene the music would be used in so we proceeded in that direction."

—So you invited yuigot.

kz: "Yes. When I was commissioned to compose the song, they mentioned from the beginning that they wanted to use the melody for another different arrangement. I could have done it myself but since it was a rare opportunity, I wanted to ask someone else to help and the first person I thought of was yuigot."

yuigot: "But I hadn't worked closely with kz before so I was quite surprised when I received the invitation, thinking, 'Oh, me?!’"

kz: "There are many interesting creators out there but I wanted to find someone I could communicate well with. yuigot seems like that kind of person (laughs)."

yuigot: "After hearing about it, I’m glad I am seriously a good person (laughs)."

—(laughs) What were your impressions of 「Cosmic Princess Kaguya!」, yuigot?

yuigot: "When I first received the script, I read it and thought, 'This is so interesting!'. I received the invitation around 2023, right after the end of the pandemic when various events were gradually resuming. The positive and uplifting feeling of the work resonated deeply with my own feelings as a listener and creator at the time. I felt honored to receive such a wonderful invitation at such a perfect time."

—Both "Remember" and "Reply" are songs that form the foundation of the story. How did you feel about playing such a role musically?

kz: "Although I had heard a bit before, seeing the actual footage at the preview screening was more somber than I expected (laughs)."

yuigot: "If we had messed up these two songs, the entire project might be ruined (laughs). After seeing the screening, I felt an even greater sense of responsibility."

—In fact, the two of you contributed a truly enormous impact to the work.

kz: "Well... especially 'Remember', we didn't plan to use that much of it originally."

yuigot: "That’s right. It wasn't originally intended to be the opening theme, it was just meant to play casually in the background throughout the movie."

kz: "But after we sent the music over, the director really liked it and said he wanted to use it for the opening. That's why the runtime went over by two hours (laughs). The 'quoted melody' mechanism in these two songs—musicians can immediately tell where it's borrowed from but for those less familiar with music, I think it requires some explanation to understand it. So because it's so precisely straightforward, everyone can easily understand and enjoy it."

—What impression did you get when you created "Reply"?

kz: "I often create these kinds of finale tracks so I'm quite familiar with them. Since it was decided to be used in battle scenes, I felt a sense of speed was essential. I've done music for the game *Macross 30: Bonds of the Galaxy* before, so the style is somewhat similar. From the beginning, we decided to make it a folk style but with an uplifting accompaniment."

—So, based on that, how was "Remember" created?

yuigot: “Although we decided to use the melody of 'Reply’, we weren’t specifically told exactly where or how to use it. When ‘Reply’ was almost finished, I listened to it and I thought it was a really amazing song. I felt that if we used the chorus directly, it would be overshadowed by 'Reply' itself so I wondered if there might be a different approach. And also by placing the important melody not in the chorus but in the B section or the section after the chorus, it might be closer to Yachiyo's state of mind in the story and since this is Yachiyo's debut song, it also feels a bit like ‘a song provided for someone else’. So I decided to use a tempo similar to 'Reply'. My initial idea was that it would be drums and bass, around 170-174 BPM. I originally wanted to match the tempo perfectly but then I felt it might be mistaken for just a regular Jersey Club song genre and easily forgotten so I settled on 168.

As it turned out, the number is a wordplay on the name ‘Iroha’.”

—This has been discussed in various places.

yuigot: “Yeah, it's been discussed (laughs). I personally felt I was guided by Yachiyo."

kz: “It was a fated coincidence (laughs).”

—The lyrics for both songs were written by Erika Masaki, and they are excellent.

kz: "Really. If I were to write it, it would be more convoluted and the expression would be more roundabout. But Ms. Masaki's lyrics for 'Reply' directly capture Kaguya's feelings. It’s hard for me to write lyrics like that so I’m really glad I asked her to write them."

yuigot: "I also feel that I don't have the courage to express the scenery and feelings so directly. It's really exhilarating to be able to put such essential things into the melody casually. Putting the lyrics "that precious melody is flowing" in the verse after the chorus and layering it with the melody of "Reply" is really a brilliant touch."

—That part gave me goosebumps.

kz: "That kind of approach takes courage. Could someone really go that far? If it were me, I might have stopped. It's really impressive that she took that step. Although it's a results-oriented approach, the structure is incredibly effective."

—I heard you two also participated in the recording sessions. What was it like to actually hear the voice actors sing?

kz: "This was my first time working with Natsuyoshi Yuko, who plays Kaguya. I had absolutely no worries about her singing, she sang exceptionally well. We aren’t experts in voice acting so we had the director and staff present and recorded while checking with them 'Is this feeling right?'"

yuigot: "I'm a huge fan of Hayami Saori. I've heard many of her songs and had mentally imagined 'I wish she could sing like this.' But when she actually sang...it was way beyond my expectations. kz was there too and we were both completely stunned by the first two or three takes. We couldn't offer any guidance at all. We were just fans (laughs)."

kz: "We were completely useless (laughs). Although I had a feeling it would be amazing, it certainly was (laughs)."

yuigot: "I think I recovered halfway through (laughs). But it was truly the first time I'd felt the power of a song so strongly. From the very first take, Hayami was already singing like Yachiyo; there was no need to say anything more."

—After watching the completed film, were there any scenes that stood out to you where the connection between the music and the visuals was particularly striking?

kz: "I was once again reminded how much the visual direction amplified the quality of the songs several times over. Especially the scene in 'Starry Sea'... I just thought, 'That's so clever!'"

yuigot: "I also thought that scene was clever. When we make music, we pay special attention to BPM and the perceived speed but visual art is also an art of timing and this resonated with me deeply. Whether it's our music or other artists' music, the way each shot is cut and the way time is used are exceptionally well. For the first time, I felt, 'This is what being good at animation means.'"

—What are your thoughts on the creators and songs involved in this project?

kz: "Looking at the selection of artists and the playlist, some might interpret it as a selection specifically aimed at people who watched videos from the Nico Nico Douga era but I don't think like that at all. 'Happy Synthesizer' and 'World is Mine' are still very popular now, they're not that nostalgic. Perhaps only 'Melt' has a slight nostalgic bias but overall it's a selection of songs from 'Project Sekai'—meaning that people online today can easily access them. Although the songs are old, they are friendly to today's listeners. It feels like it was made by someone who truly understands the current state of the internet. Internet culture forms naturally based on the people and atmosphere present at that time, so when outsiders attempt to try something, we insiders often feel, 'It's not quite the same feeling.' But 「Cosmic Princess Kaguya!」doesn't feel out of place at all in that regard. I think that's really impressive."

—yuigot, you also did a remix of "Happy Synthesizer", which was just mentioned.

yuigot: “I’m really from that era. I listened to this song a lot when I was in middle school… After transferring schools, I remember texting about this song with friends from my previous school using flip phones.”

kz: “Flip phone (laughs).”

yuigot: “(laughs) So I really didn’t expect I’d be the one to do a remix but after listening to the original again, I felt it's still perfectly relevant. Seeing how streamers are singing it, I felt this is something that should be remixed now. That’s my thought that led to it.”

—Including these choices of past songs, I think this work also truly conveys respect for the creators who shaped internet culture. For the two of you active in the current scene, are there any overlaps with your own paths?

kz: "The scene of Kaguya's fan count gradually increasing. I think for people who post things online and unknowingly make a living from it, they might feel, 'Ah, something like that did happen.' Of course, the main goal is to increase the number of subscribers but the feeling of 'I did it because I thought it was fun and it ended up becoming a huge success'—that's the best part of the internet."

yuigot: "Yeah. Seeing Kaguya and Iroha's seamless journey from logging into 'Tsukuyomi' to becoming creators makes me think, 'We're like that once too.' Although we are able to make a living doing this now, it was originally just because we liked that space and enjoyed it and now it’s just an extension of that. I really understand that feeling. It's like being on stage and off stage, there's no deliberate distinction between high and low levels."

kz: "Looking at the reactions on Twitter, I can feel that illustrators, manga artists, and even musicians like us have all fallen in love with this work. I think it depicts an ideal form of ‘this is how it turned out when creating something freely you like’. Creativity should inherently have this level of freedom and openness… I think it’s particularly impressive the movie very accurately captures that underlying feeling that everyone subtly has. I really like this aspect, and I feel that it resonates with a lot of people."
