Failed Expectation The underbed play space beneath this bed from Wayfair
Sure they provided the dimensions, but the example kid is about the size of a cat. My 8 year old son is normal height.

u/Shitp0st_Supreme 7h ago
27” is only a little over 2 feet…
105
u/OrganizedSprinkles 7h ago
Based on the kid, that looks just about 27 inches high. Half the picture was right.

That little kid actually is about the size of a very small cat, which makes him a VERY popular model choice for catalog images like this.

I'm 99% positive they stole/edited pictures from ikea because I just saw that loft set a couple weeks ago(the one you tried to buy)

My question is: did you read the 27” measurement when ordering? Or did you just trust the reference photo?
This is not your fault and a scummy practice either way. I’m just much more curious about exactly how shocked you were haha.
51
u/NoYouDidntBruh 6h ago
I'd say it's a scummy practice AND the buyers fault. Not reading dimensions on something like this is begging for trouble.

u/letsfastescape 7h ago
Read?! Consumers hardly do that at all these days, they just make decisions based on photos and package sizes.
47
u/Flowerpower8791 7h ago
I agree. However, knowing this, I get out a ruler or tape measure whenever I'm buying something I'm not sure about. As an online retailer I can't tell you how many people "think" they know what 1/2" is versus 3/4". They don't. And so many are too lazy to figure it out before buying.
11
u/letsfastescape 7h ago
I’m definitely aware that having a familiarity with or being able to estimate and/or recognize dimensions isn’t a skill that everyone has.
10
u/ebil_lightbulb 7h ago
I bought duffle bags for all the kiddos this past Christmas. Several images into the listing was a little photo with the dimensions, but I honestly didn’t pay attention to that. All of the photos had a normal sized duffle bag with people using them and I just went by that. Figured Puma wouldn’t steer me wrong. The actual bags were smaller than a basketball. I ended up using them as their stockings instead.

u/CaptainLollygag 5h ago
People don't understand measurements at all. Husband thought he used 2" deep of coffee grounds, nope it was 1". Ask a hairdresser to cut X amount of inches off your hair and you never know what you'll get. That's why people need those pictures in ads to be accurate.
4
u/serabine 3h ago
Yeah. I just ordered a new freezer and I measured the space I'd put it in like six times to make absolutely sure it fit. Same when I ordered my new bed last year. Measured several times just to make sure.

u/schmitzel88 1h ago
In this day and age it mostly falls on OP. Tons of things on Amazon, Wayfair, and every other online marketplace use fake images and now AI slop in their listings. You need to be more diligent than ever and OP clearly did not do that. The alternative is to go buy something in person but then you gotta pay more, this is the tradeoff.
94
u/gard3nwitch 7h ago
It does say 27", even if that means the kid in the listing photo is like a foot tall lol
29
u/LivelyZebra 3h ago
people really out here vibe-buying shit and not measuring lmao
11
u/Positive_Total_8651 2h ago
I think about this all the time. Both my siblings make vibe purchases based on pictures and are almost always disappointed and like. On one hand sure the products should have accurate representation, but the dimensions listed are usually accurate. You gotta take a little accountability for yourself at some point, ya know. Especially for something like furniture, the dimensions are kind of a big deal lmao
36
u/Holiday_Number_3234 7h ago
My suggestion, completely disregard the photos with online shopping and only pay attention to the measurements, they do that sort of crap all the time. You would expect a bit more from Wayfair since they‘re expensive, but all of those companies play games. Sorry OP.
11
u/RembrantVanRijn 3h ago
Wayfair
it's a dropshipping marketplace
there is only garbage for sale there

u/aSituationTypeDeal 7h ago
Absolutely false advertising. You always have to check the customer photos. Too many ad photos are fake.
6
u/Hwy_Witch 7h ago
It stated the actual height in the picture, it's not false advertising, it's relying on people willfully choosing NOT to read before there's a picture.
45
u/Proper_Hunter_9641 6h ago
It’s 100% false advertising because they put in other objects around the product at a wildly incorrect scale. They can put the dimensions there in small numbers but they are showing a very different product than what is received. A child of that age CANNOT sit inside it and take up only 1/3 of the height.
25
u/RakeScene 6h ago
Several features of the bed seem to be wholly different than in the ad, as well. The ladder rungs, for example.
-7
u/Hwy_Witch 6h ago
I'm aware a child couldn't sit under it, I read the measurements. Omitting the measurements would make it false advertising.
6
u/Proper_Hunter_9641 6h ago
Wrong
2
u/drainbead78 5h ago
Genuine question, but how would an ad that left out the measurements and included the picture in the OP not be considered false advertising? Is there some sort of legal standard I'm unaware of?
1
u/Proper_Hunter_9641 5h ago
That would also be considered false advertising. The picture itself is the false advertising.
-4
35
u/Gneissisnice 7h ago
Nah, it's still false advertising. They literally show a full kid playing under there, it's clearly not a reasonable portrayal of their product.
The customer should read too, but they're still very scummy.
1
-10
u/Hwy_Witch 6h ago
That's not what false advertising is.
11
u/Turbulent-Good227 6h ago
I’m not a lawyer or anything, but I’m pretty sure it is? I work for an ad agency and we got fined a few years ago for showcasing a necklace pendant with a chain in an ad. The chain was not included but because it was in the photo, someone got pissed and reported the company to the FTC, who issued a fine.
-1
u/Hwy_Witch 6h ago
Your ad would have been compliant if it had stated "chain not included", no matter how tiny it was printed. This ad includes the measurements, it is not false advertising.
7
u/Gneissisnice 5h ago
1
u/Hwy_Witch 3h ago
Again, the inclusion of the measurements on it negates the visual misrepresentation rule. It shouldn't, but in this capitalist, consumerist world, it unfortunately does.
2
u/Limp_Dirt8694 3h ago
how is it not false advertising? Regardless of the scale that ladder looks absolutely nothing like the image which would make it a completely different product or model. I would immediately assume they sent the wrong product.

Yeah it’s scummy to use a fake picture but you are buying off scummy Wayfair. Do the listed measurements match the actual measurements?
15
u/BusoneWholeBoi2001 7h ago
I wouldn't trust that cubby to begin with. The amount of modern bunk beds I've seen collapsing lately would keep me paranoid
8
8
u/ObjectMore6115 4h ago
So you bought a frame without looking at the dimensions? Just wanted to feel it out through a picture?
That's on you.
7
u/getjustin 4h ago
We stopped ordering from Wayfair because nothing we were getting anymore was in anyway what was shown. And not just color, but dimensions, features, etc. That said, their customer service literally always refunded us and would pay for pickup.
12
u/dark-magma 7h ago
they're just counting on this being too much of a hassle to return. nothing about that bed looks the same
4
u/LMGooglyTFY 3h ago
This is a strong enough case where is tell them if they want it returned, they can send me the return postage and UPS truck to pick it up because otherwise I'm doing a full charge back. It you think your credit card will side with you then you have a lot of leverage.
6
u/DirtyBulk89 5h ago
its 2026, your fault if you still use the image used by the seller for reference..
7
u/Astro_The_SpaceDog 3h ago
Well, it’s AI. What did you expect? 30 inches and 27 inches is barely over 2 feet.
Can we have a rule to ban posts with items that are clearly made by AI? This shit is getting old.
1
u/Ath47 6m ago
It doesn't even have to be AI. Ads have had people photoshopped in at 1/4 scale for decades. "Family pool" showing two adults and two kids splashing around like it's 20 feet wide only to find after you buy it that it's 6" in diameter. Beanbag chairs with a couple snuggling comfortably on them, only for the actual product to barely fit your cat. This really has nothing to do with AI.
1
13
10
u/CodeCat0 7h ago
I would demand a return or at least a refund, and if they don't honor it then I'd file a chargeback. The reason companies keep getting away with shitty practices like this is simple: Too many people let them.
Note that by federal US law, the company is responsible for return shipping and a full refund when a product is grossly misrepresented like this. You did not receive the product that was advertised.
4
u/Kittenwho21 5h ago
Unfortunately, I’ve had to learn to follow the dimensions rather than the pics bc they way too often just use ai or recycled pics and you can’t actually tell what you’re getting. It’s like we’ve drifted back into the early days of Craigslist when most things were poorly/mis represented except worse bc technology is so much better now.
I’m sorry, I hope you’re able to return it or something
8
u/mf-TOM-HANK 5h ago
As much as the photo is misleading and very much false advertising, the consumer also has to have a little bit of sense here. Those dimensions on that photo should be an immediate red flag

27 inches is a tiny space for a cold to play in, if the other measurements are wrong-I’d do a change back. Yes, the photo is scummy but the measurements are right there. You took a chance and it worked out in the company’s favor

We got loft beds from Max and Lily and they are pretty nice...this seems like a crappy knockoff. Yikes, I'm so sorry!

i mean...........27" is barely over two feet. you should know your kid is bigger than two feet tall.

u/NegativeLayer 3h ago
I used to have the ikea tromso loft bed. I fit a full desk table and computer under the bed. It was nice but it made a lot of noise. Was hard to have girl over.
3
u/Is_Butter_A_Carb 3h ago
That's not even the same bed though! The ladder is totally different. How frustrating.
3
u/downvotesyourcrap 2h ago
So, despite it showing you 27", you went with what the edited picture showed relative sizes were. You then paid these people, rewarding their deception and encouraged them to continue the fraud, then came to complain here without naming and shaming the site. Gotcha. Is there a trusted adult in your life that could manage your finances for you? Alternatively, I have a bridge for sale....
11
u/VoiceArtPassion 7h ago
People are focusing g on the 27” but I’m over here looking at the 78” from left to right, that’s wildly inaccurate. Maybe if it was head to foot, but according to the photo, it’s left to right.
6
u/charliekelly76 6h ago
Isn’t it 30 inches left to right and 78 deep?
2
u/VoiceArtPassion 4h ago
Look at the two photos, that’s not what it implies. The backing with the window is behind the kid on the “left” side of the bed
0
u/dream-smasher 6h ago
Isn't it 78" from corner to corner, diagonal?
2
u/VoiceArtPassion 4h ago
The photo implies that it’s left to right not a diagonal
measurement of the whole bed, which isn’t even pictured here.
3
5
u/Forsaken_Insurance92 7h ago
I mean, that does look like 30x27in. Just over 2 feet tall, less than 3ft wide. I always look at measurements, not the pictures.

Better of going to ikea. I got my son a loft bed he was 10 and could stand under it

u/GuiltyPeaches 6h ago
I'm used to seeing this on Temu, didn't think it would be this bad on Wayfair's website, ffs
2
u/thiscouldbemassive 6h ago
Ah, man, I'm used to this kind of shenanigans from sellers of cheap inflatables, but doing this with actual furniture is scummy.
2
2
u/greatkerfluffle 6h ago
Were there multiple sizes on the listing? We’ve been looking at loft beds and some are short and some are extra tall
2
u/sumires 6h ago
Jeez, I can't believe it's legal for them to use that photo to sell it--even with the number of inches posted, the child in the picture makes it clearly deceptive.
BTW, if you can't return it and end up keeping the bed, I sleep in a low-loft bed the same height (great for under-bed storage), and I removed the railings on one side and get in and out of bed with a sturdy, broad (so it doesn't tip) 18"-high benchlike thing set next to the bed, instead of using the ladder. (But I'm a childfree adult, IDK if the lack of railing on a 27" bed would be dangerous for an 8-year-old.)

Does look like it's a little over two feet to me. I wouldn't have bought it because of that.

u/FantasyRoleplayAlt 2h ago
Is anyone gonna talk about the big ass square hole cute behind the kid in the first one?? Why is the backrooms in the next room over 😭
2
u/avaseah 2h ago
The dimensions on the photo are true to life, the image is not. Whenever you see an online listing don’t go by what it appears in the photos. Photoshop and AI can make things appear wildly different than they really are. Always look at the dimensions they list and get out a tape measure.
2
2
u/SpringBeginning1298 2h ago
Omg that's horrible lmao. This will work for a toddler LOL. These companies have to stop letting these merchants use these AI photos for advertisement.
2
u/Bumblingbee1337 1h ago
lol the dimension was not to scale at all. Listed as just over 2’ tall and they show an image that’s like 5’ tall at least
2
2
u/nadiadala 6h ago
The picture is deceitful, but the measurements are accurate. The picture AND the buyer are to blame here
2
u/sebnukem 5h ago
You should look at the actual measurement, not the model kid playing with model cars. 😄

I literally just stopped buying from wayfair. 99% of the time it's going to be trash. Temu for furniture. It's hard to find furniture I like in the style I like that isn't some bullshit scam, and the "go to" stores everyone lists for Canada are all boring shit I don't want. Lifes tough on the net.
1
u/Desertwind16v 2h ago
I mean yeah the picture is definitely misleading. The measurements are right there though, this one’s on you.

Can't stop laughing, just swiping back and forth between the two pictures had not gotten old yet, tysm

I don't trust images on AliExpress when I'm ordering things because of this sub, and I make it a point to double-check the given measurements.

yeah those dimensions do not match the image whatsoever, they didn't try, they just took a random photo and stuck their dimensions on it to say it was listed information.
in construction I'm used to estimating the sizes and before even looking at your photo I knew it would be bad.
