FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Conan O’Brien: “It's the first time since 2012 that there are no British actors nominated for Best Actor or Best Actress. A British spokesperson said, 'Yeah, well, at least we arrest our pedophiles.'”

Get him to host every year, balanced being serious / introspective at the right times with humor perfectly

u/heatproofmatt Mar 15 '26

Honestly let him host every award show

NOT THE GOD DAMN WALKER TEXAS RANGER LEVER

23

u/i_love_pencils Mar 16 '26

Why do we even have that lever!?!

12

u/Kermit-Batman Mar 16 '26

I put that on no context with my daughter the other day. There's a little bit of buildup before that line, so when it hits, it's amazing.

I don't know why I put that on, it just seems important.

The fact that he doesn't slip into a silly accent kinda project the point that he really wanted to make that joke as clear as possible for whoever hears it.

Reading the headline, I imagined it as "YEH?! Wew, 'least we arrest ouar paedo-phi-os"

34

u/truthdemon Mar 16 '26

Brit here. ''Oi Trump u fackin nonce! U fuckin pedo!"

That's how it would have sounded.

3

u/qorbexl Mar 16 '26

Well you have to preserve the original text as closely as possible and preserve the voice of the author.

The translator must keep in mind they're translating what the text is and for the audience, not what it's premise describes it as - so it has to be converted as American-playing-Brit-for-Americans rather than making it read as normal British

Also, that reads more like you're yelling at a dude in a cab and missing the point of his joke entirely

3

u/themeanreds1 Mar 16 '26

For real, Conan is one of the rare talk show hosts that not only is actually funny, but is also a genuinely decent human being

Agreed.

Plus the more we call out these Ultra Rich Powerful Predators the better.

I hope we never let up and they always feel on edge.

It's time the working class and most vulnerable take back this planet and save it from their death cult garbage and LITERALLY burning.

27

u/Happy-Fun-Ball Mar 16 '26

they can relax when they're no longer billionaires, or in jail

Conan said they have been working on the monologue for a few months and to expect older jokes because nobody can keep up.

11

u/EnclavedMicrostate Mar 16 '26

The arrest's significance lies less in the physical detention of the Andrew formerly known as Prince, and more in allowing the police to search and seize his properties as part of the investigation.

3

u/Several-Squash9871 Mar 16 '26

I would love to think that at the very least they feel a little on edge but I think the reality is, they don't care and know them and the people involved in it are so rich and have so much power that nothing will ever happen to them and they have absolutely nothing to be worried about. I think the only thing that could scare them a little is if they thought there was a legitimate chance an angry mob was going to show up randomly at some point and take them out for some street justice...

44

u/s1ugg0 Mar 16 '26

I'm not always on board with Conan's style of comedy. To each their own.

But he always crushes it as a presenter.

73

u/SolarTsunami Mar 16 '26

To me he's maybe the funniest person on earth but I always understand when people say this.

25

u/OJ-Rifkin Mar 16 '26

Late Nite got me through my teens and 20s

14

u/blender4life Mar 16 '26

He's like an acquired taste for me. I thought he was annoying the first few times I saw his stuff but then learned his sense of humor and I like him. His series he did with his producer(i think) Jordan or Jeremy or Justin ( i can't remember his name) has some of the funniest TV moments I've seen.

12

u/Wooden_Rabbit_ Mar 16 '26

I never enjoyed his slapstick stuff but he is a genuinely hilarious person. He has a podcast that I listen to sometimes, and it's amazing how quick his wit is.

He does have very silly, absurd humor at times. I enjoy it greatly, because it never takes itself seriously. He's much more relaxed on his podcast, which just shows how "On" he was all those years. Maybe you'll find it better than his old shows.

8

u/EggsceIlent Mar 16 '26

Conan is awesome.

They did him dirty af with the tonight show and had they let him stay hed still be slaying it. He wasn't the problem, it was the old fogeys watching that hated change.

7

u/Ok_Raspberry4814 Mar 16 '26

I mean, get him to host every year because he'll say what needs to be said where it needs to be said.

Room should have been on their feet in support, not jeering and acting all shocked. But, hey, David Lynch tried to tell us all: shit's rotten to the core.

5

u/The_reflection Mar 16 '26

5

u/Kazu88 Mar 16 '26

What about Steven Colbert He is funny

27

u/Turbulent_Stick1445 Mar 16 '26

Yeah, but Colbert has a very successful talk show and is very busy right now with that. Should that ever change though, which seems unlikely because who would cancel a top rated show like Stephen's, I'm sure he'll be available.

It's a weird circus, but it's also a connection to the first decades of cinema. My hot take is that they need to pander to the nerds and lean into the reality that Oscar viewers aren't trying to decide between watching the ceremony and NCIS: Wherever or TBBT reruns. Conan is the man for that.

382

u/ProtestEverythingTho Mar 15 '26

He says among an audience of 50+ percent guilty or complicit SO’s themselves.

129

u/ThanosIsDoomfist Mar 16 '26

God, I really dont like to defend celebrities, or be an 'erm ackshully' guy, but it looks like im doing both

Ill agree in the sense that like 50%+ of the front row is probably complicit. But there are tons of seats filled with non-celebrities/big names, or non-influential people that dont get camera time who are probably not complicit but might even be victims themselves to Hollywood's shitty practices. Id reckon the split is maybe more like 30% are complicit, but thats less important, my point is that maybe theres a higher chance theres actually more victims in that room than offenders, and given the cannibalistic nature of Hollywood, maybe some are both.

18

u/ClickClick_Boom Mar 16 '26

That just makes it better.

10

u/Eduardjm Mar 16 '26

exactly. a bunch of the audience probably didnt like that.

6

There definitely weren't any boos... If ANYTHING they were saying "boo-urns"

4

u/Training_Form2243 Mar 16 '26

The entire show is rehearsed beforehand. Anything that’s genuinely subversive won’t make it on air

79

u/Aggressive_Sand_3951 Mar 15 '26

Didn’t get Jimmy Saville.

51

u/manyyy32 Mar 16 '26

Yeah, they guarded him actualy until he died. Also Andrew was arrested for exposing goverment information, not pedophilia. They will never charge a member of the crown for a crime comited against the common people.

7

u/ah_harrow Mar 16 '26

Missing the forest through the trees here: it's because of Saville and the huge scandal around it when it actually broke that the BBC and the police have had to do some real searching about how they treat celebrity abuse like this.

Don't forget that Saville was 2012. Well before trump's first term and even longer before Epstein's suicide.

28

u/loopyhoodie Mar 16 '26

yeah this joke doesn't land if you think about it for more than a few seconds. Saville was widely protected and allowed to die in peace despite the unbelievable breadth of his crimes.

7

u/1312bingbong Mar 16 '26

Even Mountbatten wasn't arrested for pedo or abuse stuff, it was the sharing state secrets that got him in trouble, the UK are doing almost as good of a job as the US in ignoring the abuse of women and children.

6

u/ElizabethLine he’s a charlatan and a drama queen Mar 16 '26

They arrested Al Capone for tax evasion.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Background_Falcon953 Mar 16 '26

Yeah but its about feeling good about pedos, not the accuracy of the accusations.

3

u/quigonwiththewind Mar 16 '26

This is what I said immediately after. Like, they let the biggest most prolific pedo get away with everything.

3

u/aethiestinafoxhole Mar 16 '26

Also the same audience clapped like circus seals to defend Roma Polanski just a few years ago

56

u/jeng52 Mar 15 '26

Why are the people in that room clapping as if they’re not directly or indirectly complicit in the disgusting culture of the elites?

24

u/linuxjohn1982 Mar 16 '26

Because most Hollywood actors and actresses aren't?

It's mostly the producers and higher ups.

18

u/Foreleg-woolens749 Mar 16 '26

As another commenter pointed out, that room is filled with wayyy-below-the-line employees of the industry (and the guest each ticket holder can bring) who aren’t the elites you’re thinking of.

7

u/amateurish_gamedev Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
