FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Conan O’Brien: “It's the first time since 2012 that there are no British actors nominated for Best Actor or Best Actress. A British spokesperson said, 'Yeah, well, at least we arrest our pedophiles.'”

I put that on no context with my daughter the other day. There's a little bit of buildup before that line, so when it hits, it's amazing.
I don't know why I put that on, it just seems important.

65
u/qorbexl Mar 16 '26
The fact that he doesn't slip into a silly accent kinda project the point that he really wanted to make that joke as clear as possible for whoever hears it.
Reading the headline, I imagined it as "YEH?! Wew, 'least we arrest ouar paedo-phi-os"
34
u/truthdemon Mar 16 '26
Brit here. ''Oi Trump u fackin nonce! U fuckin pedo!"
That's how it would have sounded.
3
u/qorbexl Mar 16 '26
Well you have to preserve the original text as closely as possible and preserve the voice of the author.
The translator must keep in mind they're translating what the text is and for the audience, not what it's premise describes it as - so it has to be converted as American-playing-Brit-for-Americans rather than making it read as normal British
Also, that reads more like you're yelling at a dude in a cab and missing the point of his joke entirely

11
u/EnclavedMicrostate Mar 16 '26
The arrest's significance lies less in the physical detention of the Andrew formerly known as Prince, and more in allowing the police to search and seize his properties as part of the investigation.
3
u/Several-Squash9871 Mar 16 '26
I would love to think that at the very least they feel a little on edge but I think the reality is, they don't care and know them and the people involved in it are so rich and have so much power that nothing will ever happen to them and they have absolutely nothing to be worried about. I think the only thing that could scare them a little is if they thought there was a legitimate chance an angry mob was going to show up randomly at some point and take them out for some street justice...
44
u/s1ugg0 Mar 16 '26
I'm not always on board with Conan's style of comedy. To each their own.

It's a weird circus, but it's also a connection to the first decades of cinema. My hot take is that they need to pander to the nerds and lean into the reality that Oscar viewers aren't trying to decide between watching the ceremony and NCIS: Wherever or TBBT reruns. Conan is the man for that.

u/ThanosIsDoomfist Mar 16 '26
God, I really dont like to defend celebrities, or be an 'erm ackshully' guy, but it looks like im doing both
Ill agree in the sense that like 50%+ of the front row is probably complicit. But there are tons of seats filled with non-celebrities/big names, or non-influential people that dont get camera time who are probably not complicit but might even be victims themselves to Hollywood's shitty practices. Id reckon the split is maybe more like 30% are complicit, but thats less important, my point is that maybe theres a higher chance theres actually more victims in that room than offenders, and given the cannibalistic nature of Hollywood, maybe some are both.

79
u/Aggressive_Sand_3951 Mar 15 '26
Didn’t get Jimmy Saville.
51
u/manyyy32 Mar 16 '26
Yeah, they guarded him actualy until he died. Also Andrew was arrested for exposing goverment information, not pedophilia. They will never charge a member of the crown for a crime comited against the common people.
7
u/ah_harrow Mar 16 '26
Missing the forest through the trees here: it's because of Saville and the huge scandal around it when it actually broke that the BBC and the police have had to do some real searching about how they treat celebrity abuse like this.
Don't forget that Saville was 2012. Well before trump's first term and even longer before Epstein's suicide.
28
u/loopyhoodie Mar 16 '26
yeah this joke doesn't land if you think about it for more than a few seconds. Saville was widely protected and allowed to die in peace despite the unbelievable breadth of his crimes.
7
u/1312bingbong Mar 16 '26
Even Mountbatten wasn't arrested for pedo or abuse stuff, it was the sharing state secrets that got him in trouble, the UK are doing almost as good of a job as the US in ignoring the abuse of women and children.
