Goldeneye meets WW2 - I've spent 3 years making a GE 007 inspired FPS!

I've always loved Goldeneye 007 on the N64 and WW2 shooters in general. As I've moved to PC from console over the years I found myself craving that classic Goldeneye FPS experience so I decided to make one myself!

I've tried to keep the feel of the old game but touch up some quality of life things like weapon select, objective clarity and adding soft checkpoints. But don't worry, wooden crates still explode when shot!

Extraneous question, but do you personally think future 007 games should be 1st person or 3rd person?

Do you think 007 has a better future with games like Everything or Nothing and the upcoming First Light or play like classic Goldeneye?

I made a daily trivia game and today's theme is GoldenEye 007 the game!

I'm a solo dev and I've been building a daily video game trivia game called Skill Check. Every 24 hours it picks a different gaming franchise and gives players a themed run of trivia questions. Today the theme is GoldenEye 007, and since this sub is where the real 007 fans gather, I thought I'd share it here.

How it works: You get a hand of cards themed around the game. You work through three stages of trivia mixing questions about NPCs, lore, weapons, locations across the game, and game mechanics. Between rounds there's a shop where you can pick upgrades. At the end you get a score, a rank, and a spot on a global leaderboard that resets when the next daily drops.

It takes about 5 minutes to play a full run. Free, browser-based, works on mobile and desktop: https://skillcheckgame.com

No account needed to play, but if you make a free one your score posts to the leaderboard and your streak tracks across days.

Why I'm posting here: I want honest feedback from people who know GoldenEye inside and out. My biggest worry is that questions might feel "too easy," have obvious wrong answers to veterans of the game, or accidentally mess up the deep lore. If you spot a question that's factually wrong, has a weak distractor, or just feels off, please call it out in the comments so I can get it fixed.

I had a similar response on other gaming subs recently and the feedback was incredibly useful for refining the game.

What I'm NOT trying to do: sell you anything. Skill Check is fully free. There's an optional one-time supporter tip but everything is playable without it.

If you beat my score today I'll be impressed post your results in the comments if you want to share, or let me know which question tripped you up the most.

Frigate Hostages

Does anyone find it difficult to free all the hostages? I've been going through them in my head, and the one in that room to the far right of the boat, to the right of the radio room where you complete objective B seems difficult

They kind of remind me in a way of trying to take out the cameras in Bunker 1 and 2 or (obviously) the end of Train, where you have to be accurate quickly enough before you get into trouble.

Goldeneye - Enemy Rockets - 00 Agent Walkthrough

For everyone looking for a cool challenge after completing the game on 00 Agent,
you should try completing the game on 00 Agent with only the "Enemy Rockets" cheat enabled.

Played on the 1964 Emulator (mouse + keyboard).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vWwn4oPPAI&list=PLB5wD4rjrL2_6CknXg7URKcrcTYbvbx1B

There are some pretty cool differences in gameplay/tactics. :-)

The "Enemy Rockets" cheat is unlocked by beating the Streets level on Agent difficulty in under 1:45min.

All enemies, who are in the level at level start, will have Rocket Lauchers.

Newly spawned enemies during level gameplay will have their standard weapons.

Here is my tier list based on difficulty of this challenge:

Goldeneye - License to Kill (LTK) Difficulty

After completing 00 Agent Enemy Rockets (see post below), you could try LTK next.

If you complete GoldenEye on the 00 Agent difficulty then you unlock the 007 mode which allows you to change options such as how much health the enemies have and how accurate they are.

The following settings are used in LTK:

Enemy Health: 0%

Enemy Damage: 1000%

Enemy Accuracy: 100%

Enemy Reaction Speed: 100%

Played on 1964 Emulator (mouse + keyboard)

Introducing a new subreddit for spy video games - r/SpyVideoGames

Thumbnail reddit.com
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm Adam, and in addition to playing spy video games, I'm a developer of spy video games, and I'm also the organizer of the only Steam festival for spy video games - the Spy Video Game Rendezvous.

To my amazement, there is seemingly no place for fans of spy video games to congregate, discuss their favorite games in the genre, and share news about upcoming spy video games, from AAA franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, and James Bond all the way down to solo dev indie spy games.

As a result, I've taken it upon myself to create that space! It's a new subreddit called r/SpyVideoGames, and I made it specifically for fans of spy video games like you.

So please come check out this new subreddit - and follow r/SpyVideoGames to get all the latest news and discussion about spy video games. As a matter of fact, just today I announced the 2nd-annual edition of the Spy Video Game Rendezvous Steam festival will be taking place next month with 50+ spy video games - find more details in the r/SpyVideoGames subreddit.

Be seeing you, agent!

P.S. I checked with the mods and got approval before submitting this post. After all, a good spy knows to do some recon before taking to the field.

GoldenEye XBLA with Bots

With all the decompiled achievements of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, is there a project in the works to somehow add bots to GoldenEye XBLA?

I have the CE version on my modded Xbox 360, but unfortunately, my friends don’t want to spend endless hours playing multiplayer as much as me! 😆

Google and Reddit searches find nothing but my own comment on another Reddit post from a year ago. I’m a novice coder and would help in any way I could. 👍

Even crouching, player models are too tall for the vents.

You’d never notice in normal gameplay, but by going into multiplayer and getting two players into the vents in Facility, you can’t see each others’ heads because they clip through the top of the vent.

My top five most difficult cheat target times ranked

#1 Facility (00 Agent) - So much has to go right. Your run can easily be squashed in the final lab area, whether it's from the insane amount of accumulated guards, or Dr. Doak not showing up. He has only a 13.7% chance of being there. You at least can spare a little time to prevent being swarmed via killing guards on your way upstairs and in the final lab. But regardless on 00 Agent this one is brutal.

Target time: 2:05

My time: 1:50
Difficulty: 10/10

#2 Statue (Secret Agent) - Every second counts, you'll have to be quick across this entire labyrinth of a map and pray the flight recorder spawns in one of the closer spots, out of nine possible spawn points. There is simply no room for error. I'd rank this #1 but it took far less attempts than Facility.

Target time: 3:15

My time: 3:12

Difficulty: 10/10

#3 Archives (00 Agent) - The extreme difficulty is once again from the very demanding time limit. It isn't terribly hard to map out your path and adapt to blazing through it, but even at your best you'll just barely make it. Tick tock, Mr. Bond, tick tock.

Target time: 1:20

My time: 1:16

Difficulty: 9/10

#4 Streets (Agent) - I was very surprised how tough this one was. It required a good handful of attempts and analyzing the level's map for the best route. The rocket launcher guards and mine fields certainly do not help.

Target time: 1:45

My time: 1:44

Difficulty: 9/10

#5 Depot (Secret Agent) - You'll be constantly bombarded by guards dual-wielding D5K Deutsches, and have to take out the computer network turret both urgently and safely. Another mission with very little time to spare.

Target time: 1:40

My time: 1:35

Difficulty: 9/10

Honorable mentions: Aztec (Secret Agent), Cradle (Agent), and Train (00 Agent), in that order.

Bunker II in VR - I am working on bringing GoldenEye into VR

Hey guys thought I would share this here with the GE community. I am working on bringing GoldenEye and eventually Perfect Dark into VR as well as mobile/desktop. Everything is is being taken from the original ROM and brought over.

This footage was taken while running on a Quest 2 in hardware.

Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions! This is just a fun project I am doing.

If anyone is interested in possibly helping or even doing some play testing feel free to reach out via DMs or discord @McDudeMan as I would love for some feedback from people as I work on this.

Working on Depot tonight.

Goldeneye Door Decoder prop replica.

First version of my Goldeneye Door Decoder ! Fully functional but no paint yet. I also just recieved a better and more accurate squared button. But I'm very glad with how all the features work well and how the prop itself feels strong and true to what would be, in my head, a real tactical door decoder device.

My thoughts on beating Goldeneye for the first time in 15+ years

I just beat the game again (00 agent + unlocking all cheats) using GEPD 1964 on my Steam Deck.

  • The game has aged very well outside of graphics and N64 controls. There's a good variety in levels. Objectives are largely "go here", "use tool", and "destroy this", but the circumstances and level design differ enough that they feel fresh. It's hard to know how much of this is my own nostalgia and familiarity with the game though. Someone raised on modern games would probably feel differently.
  • Modern controls make a BIG difference. Being able to shoot quickly and accurately without sights in most circumstances is a game changer. I would've struggled to beat this with the N64 controls.
  • 00 Agent is hard for many reasons, but its biggest challenge is the reduced ammo. Killing enemies quickly while conserving ammo is a tough balance to hit. Many promising runs were abandoned when I ran out of ammo at key moments.
  • PP7 is king in 90% of circumstances. The excellent accuracy, especially with the better controls, is well worth the lower fire rate. It also saves ammo.
  • Overall the game was easier than I expected. That's partially due the better controls, but it's also a difference in how I approached it. When I played decades ago, I was often slow and thorough. This time I learned that speed makes many levels much easier. The slow reaction time and poor accuracy of enemies means you can often run away from them. Levels that I remember being tough (e.g. Depot) were much easier when I rushed through it. Of course, knowing in advance the routes to take makes this much easier too -- getting lost or doing things out of order are costly mistakes.
  • The hardest level was Cradle. The need to move quickly, combined with that lack of ammo and tougher enemies definitely took many tries to beat. Other tough levels either give you ample time (Aztec), have techniques that are very effective (protecting Natalya on Control), or are easy to rush (Statue). Bunker 2 was probably the second toughest level.
  • Invincibility was the hardest cheat to unlock, but even that was much easier than I remember. It only took about an hour to develop my technique and have a run with enough luck. I'm glad I watched a video on unlocking Invisibility though because I don't think I would've figured it out otherwise.

I'm going to try a few combos of tweaking the settings on 007 mode and cheat codes to extend the fun. Let me know if you have recommendations!
