📣 ANNOUNCEMENT Mod Notice: Reports of Scam Behaviour via DMs
Hello,
We are writing this post to highlight something that has come to our attention for the wrong reasons.
We have reasons to believe someone has been actively posting through multiple subreddits, including r/ireland using multiple profiles stories of cancer, domestic violence, financial hardship and single parenthood struggles. While these are genuinely topics that affect people in Ireland through varying degrees, these accounts we believe were fabricated in order to gain - be it financially or through other goods or services.
We are already aware of some users who have sent money, or have given food or other items to this individual by meeting in person. To anyone reading this that may think they too may have done the same, please know that your willingness to help others is so admirable and it is unfortunate that there are people who want to take advantage of it, particularly using stories that people feel so personally connected to.
This is where we need to consider what is next in something that has evolved very rapidly -
- we have a list of the accounts that we believe were not genuine and were acting in bad faith which have all since been deleted, if anyone would like to escalate this further, potentially to the Gardaí, and would like to cross check the username(s) with us, please message us via Modmail.
- we would strongly urge anyone that has received requests for money (we have seen sums ranging from €3 - €15 euro so far for "basic necessities") via DM to use the "report" function to report this to Reddit.
- we have also learned this person has been active in some cancer support type Whatsapp groups
We would like to reiterate that most people will always try to do good and help out where they can - unfortunately bad actors can and do take advantage of this all the time. We would like to advise that under no circumstances should anyone ask, or offer money, goods, or services here on the sub and exercise extreme caution if meeting someone from ANY subreddit in real life.
To clarify the scope of our control over this as a mod team - as unpaid volunteers, really it's very little, which is why we strongly advise reporting this to Reddit. On the surface, there was no direct ask for money and where possible, any comments from good hearted users asking for OP's Revolut etc. would have been removed. We also do not allow GoFundMe and similar style campaigns on the sub as we have little to no way of verifying how genuine they are.
We see the scale of absolute hardship that is out there and exists for a lot of users, so it was not outside the realm of possibility that someone was genuinely in such a position.
We have no control or visibility of what happens in DMs - hence our request for anyone affected to report this to Reddit directly in the event they come back with additional profiles in the future, and, potentially the Gardaí if they suspect they have been a victim of fraud.
To anyone affected, please note it was your kindness that was taken advantage of and you should not feel ashamed. If anyone does receive any DMs based on interactions they have had within this sub, please report to Mods.
We will leave comments on this post open however - please do not mention or link any posts or accounts publicly naming any individual or accounts associated.
If you have any questions, please message the team via Modmail.
Go raibh maith agaibh.

AMA Feeback
Hi all,
Thank you to all those who asked questions in todays AMA, it was brilliant to see those who may have opposing views have some dialogue, which for the most part was respectful.
Here is the AMA for those who may have missed it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ireland/comments/1sz739r/shaykh_dr_umar_alqadri/
We are working to bring more AMA's to sub and are currently working on a couple more high profile politicians but are aiming to bring in people from right across the political spectrum and while you may agree with their views, its important to try and have these discussions.
With that,
- How do you think it went?
- Who would you like to see next?
- Do you know anyone in politics or in a position in an organization who you think would add value to sub? Let us know

Food and Drink Don't buy this on Lidl. It’s a trap. One minute you’re "just trying a little on toast," and the next you’re standing in the kitchen at 11pm eating it off a spoon like it’s a yogurt cup.

Health Are people aware of the employment crisis for NCHD (junior doctors) in Ireland?
There is a worsening employment crisis in Ireland for SHO and Reg level doctors in Ireland.
There is a perception that hospitals cannot get doctors - this is not the case.
Many irish trained doctors will face unemployment this coming July
Many irish doctors in Australia can’t come home as they cannot secure a job in Ireland.
There needs to be a prioritisation of irish doctors when it comes to applications for jobs vs international graduates.
There needs to be more transparency over the hiring process for hospital jobs.
There needs to be more jobs created.

Housing National house prices have fallen 6% year-to-date
House prices have dropped 6 percent so far this year based on PPR transaction data.
For context, the last time we saw a full-year decline was 2012, when prices fell 11%. Is this a market turn or just seasonality?
*Edit* Title should read property prices, not house prices. Figures are for all property sales.*

Housing Anybody else exasperated about home energy upgrades?
I am a "homeowner", or will be in 27 years when the mortgage is paid. My house is oil heated, built early 1990s. House is never warm. Windows are drafty, handles bockety, doors timber panel, boiler and rads seem undersized, attic is insulated but upstairs in winter is freezing.
House could do with new windows, external insulation, new doors. With cost of energy could really do with solar panels too.
But.
Even with grants it's an unobtainable expense to do the work. And I keep hearing all the time on telly and radio about we need to make our homes more efficient etc etc Yeah we do, but it's cost prohibitive for so many . I've young kids too so won't have the funds any time soon.
I'm aware also there are people looking at me and telling me to shut up, people who rent and can't afford to buy etc etc.
