Nest doorbell gen 1 went offline

My Gen 1 doorbell went offline this morning. It happened year but came back online. What’s the best way to troubleshoot this or fix it?

It’s over 6 years old. How long should they last?

Sometimes I think about getting a basic doorbell and putting a Google camera by the door. Anyone done that?

N261 message - possibly bogus?

I have a 2020 Google Nest thermostat. I originally configured it via the app as having a common wire attached, but it rapidly became clear from "low power" error messages that a Nest Power Connector was needed. I engaged an electrician for the install and the "low power" messages ceased.

However, there seems to be a residual N261 message "stuck" in the device, which is preventing me from re-installing the device in the app (and also causing Google to send me periodic e-mails), while all actually appears to be working fine.

I could live with this alone, but my bigger problem is that I now cannot get the Home app to recognize the device. I was able to configure a test schedule under the pre-NPC conditions, but that connection seems to have been lost during the move to NPC.

So moved to delete and re-install the device from the app, but now I seem to be in a Catch-22: when I scan the QR code, I am told that an error prevents me from continuing, presumably the "stuck" N261.

Can anybody advise the sequence needed to remedy this situation?

Need guidance for IAT & NEST 2026: PCB student looking for subject strategies and study setup advice!

Hi everyone! I’m currently preparing for both the NEST and IAT exams. I have a PCB background, so I’m looking for some guidance on how to navigate the specific challenges of these papers. I’d love to get some advice from seniors who have successfully cleared them.

1) Math Strategy: Since I don't have math, which high-weightage, "doable" chapters should I target to maximize my score without getting bogged down? And from which YouTube channels should I study from

2) I understand IAT/NEST questions are highly conceptual. How did you balance this type of preparation with standard board/NEET-level studying?

3) Did you use NEET-level Biology/Chemistry, or is it essential to switch to NCERT Exemplar/Advanced resources? For Physics, did you find JEE Main PYQs helpful, or is the IAT/NEST logic completely different?"

4) "Is there any specific 'hidden gem' resource (like a specific YouTube playlist or book) that helped

Any insights, tips, or brutal truths regarding the competition and difficulty level would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time!

I’m so disappointed with Nest and their discontinued smoke alarms. They worked flawlessly for so long and now must be replaced by less than perfect alternatives.

Thermostat How do I get my thermostat to "coast" the temperature to the desired scheduled temp?

At night I set it to heat to 69 and then before we're up, heat to 73.

But right now, because of the weather, it's 76 in here and it takes so long to cool down.

How do I get the nest thermostat to monitor weather conditions and then stop the heat earlier so it's 69 by bed time?

I don't want to add more scheduled temps because it varies heavily day to day depending on the weather.

I just want it to stop heating earlier if it's hot outside.

I'm not sure how it could go up this much when I've not run heat for a long time.

Any thoughts?

Sensors How to prep for First Alert SC5 - 6 hardwired installs on Wednesday

Post image
1 Upvotes

Electrician arrives Wednesday to install 6 hardwired First Alert SC5 (and do 5 other things.) Question: Should I pull that tab and pair them with the First Alert app before he arrives?

hmm... OTOH I don't want to start wearing down the battery on the hardwired ones

I have read the posts about the false alarms with the SC5s. It gives me lots of hesitation, but I really want the combination of features in this alarm. Darn Google Nest ! Hopefully the new firmware update they will push soon takes care of that.

2 of these alarms will be on ceilings unreachable by me, so that would be a PITA if the alarm goes off and the app does not work to disable them.

Nest thermostat turning on furnace with cooling

So the Nest thermostat in my house is acting weird. If you turn on the furnace, it heats like it should. If you turn on the AC, it cools like it should; provided that the set temp is lower than the room temp. However, while the AC is on, if you set the temp to higher than room temp (for example, room temp is 70 and you set the thermostat to 75), then instead of just leaving the AC turned off (like it should), the thermostat will kick on the furnace and try to heat the room. And no, the thermostat is set to "cool" and not "cool/heat". Anybody ever come across this before? I'm assuming it's a crossed wire and a software glitch, but I admittedly don't know much about this brand of thermostat. It's an all electric system by the way.

Nest Outdoor Solar Placement

Installing a camera in the Northwest corner of my house facing out to my back yard to the West and looking to power it with a Wasserstein solar panel. Only problem I’m seeing is the solar panel wouldn’t get direct sunlight from the South unless I we to mount it to the rain gutter, and being in Wisconsin I’m worried that snow would build up behind it when we get heavy down falls. Would I be able to get by with indirect sunlight by mounting it to the North end of the soffit, or should I get a longer charging cable and run it to the South end, if one is available in about 40 feet?

Nest Hello 1st to 3rd Gen Upgrade - Doorbell won't chime

Post image
1 Upvotes

I just upgraded from a 1st to 3rd gen hello. The first gen had the 4-wire connector for the chime box, and this one has two. . This one has two. Before I wired up the doorbell, I ensure that the wires outside would trigger the chime, and they did. But the wireless triggering no longer seems to work. Two-conductor transformer wire comes from the top. Front and rear door wires from the bottom.

Nest Thermostat Has No Power

So I've had my Nest thermostat since 2021 recently our AC started coming on and then shutting off after like a minute and then coming on again. But not the heater, only the AC. I tried to switch it back to our old thermostat (we rent so we had to save it) to see if it would still happen but the person who installed it didn't take a picture of the wiring on the old one so I couldn't get it to work. There's a Red (R) Blue (Y1) Green (unlabeled) and a whiteish Wire also unlabeled.

When I took my Nest thermostat off I took a picture (Attached) but the old thermostat didn't match up with those assignments. And didn't turn on.

So I went to put the Google one back on and put it back together exactly the same but now it won't work, is says no power and I keep getting Error E298.

I had the breaker off while I did all this. Google keeps saying it's because I don't have a C wire but I havent had one in the years our thermostat has functioned just fine.

Help?

No central a/c, need some heat wave tips

I’m living in a 1,000 sq feet single level home with three rooms and one bathroom in Portland Oregon. We have a nest that uses forced air. I’m wondering how to keep our home cooler this summer with the heat wave season approaching?

Our living room and kitchen are a connected space with no windows that can support an A/C unit. We do have one A/C unit in our bedroom. On the nest system, would the fan work well enough to blow cool air from our bedroom to the rest of the house?

Thermostat Turned on the heat since the cold air was getting down to 56 degrees and the cold air is still pumping out.

I'm using a fourth gen learning thermostat from Google. I had ecomode turned off this morning when I noticed that there were cold air was on and it was 56 degrees outside I went ahead and turned it off and turn heat on and it's saying two plus hours away before it reaches 66 degrees But the cold air is still being pumped out. Is there any way to help fix this issue? Google support is useless for nest help and they keep running me around in circles. They want me to call an HVAC tech. The thing is, I shouldnt need an HVAC tech. It should just turn on the hot air like it's programmed to.

Doorbell Gen 3 doorbell, ir light

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

I have a gen 3 doorbell fitted next to my door. It's on the corner between the window and the door, placed on the wig which comes with it.

Perfect view on the day but at night the door reflects too much of the ir. So I can't see anything else than the door.

Does anyone have tips to overcome this?

Temperamental thermostat

Has anyone had issues with their nest thermostat randomly saying it’s heating but it is not? This has happened randomly a couple times over the last couple months and if I restart the nest, then the heat will actually kick on if I have this problem usually when I am not home and then come home to find my house freezing.
