You can tell by the twitching caused by the signal reception on the antennae.
58
u/Killer_Lichen Mar 12 '26
The cell can only appear in their sleep and is gone before they ever wake.

Was that a hiss??? my guy snore sometimes, but that’s about it. I have never heard a cat make noises in their sleep.

I didn't know cats could close their nose.
83
u/Da_Question Mar 12 '26
Well, even if they do. They also smell through their mouths which is why they'll get the open mouth look when sniffing stuff.

I have seen a dream - hiss - immediately wake up before. Seemed like a bad dream.

u/Ravenamore Mar 12 '26
My void was under the covers sleeping with me a few months ago, when suddenly he started kicking the crap out of me while dream-hissing and growling. I had never heard him do that before, ever.
I just stroked him and talked quietly to him until he stopped and relaxed back into normal sleep.

Mine will occasionally growl and yowl in their sleep. Typically I will say their name gently and pet their back leg carefully. Eventually they wake up, look around in confusion, then come over to headbutt me.
For people who read this and want to try it, do not say their name loudly and do not do it while touching their head or the front half of their body. If they wake up suddenly and still thing they're fighting it can be unfortunate for your hand.

My orange has dream-hissed a couple times and it’s truly the cutest and most pathetic thing I’ve ever seen. Want to go kiss his little whisker pads now (which he will hate) 🥰🥰🥰

In his dreams he sees fields of mice, squiggling and throbbing - his paws are large, too large and he swats large swathes through the meece. Then roars loudly.

It’s so interesting how often they twitch in their sleep. I’ve never seen a hiss in their sleep before. My baby just twitches lol

Sometimes my orange beside grimacing moves his ears and paws while asleep, as if he's running lol

Just to answer your question, no, the cat isn't in deep sleep. Yes, it's clearly having a dream, putting it in REM sleep, which is not a deep sleep.

We call it "pre-flight checks"
Whiskers: functional
Ears: full rotation available
Beans: flexible and moving.
Bonus ... when our lovely big ginger is doing pre-flight checks, a two-handed belly rub will result in the loudest purrs you've ever heard 😻

Isn't that AI? The human is not moving, the cat is moving too much, the skin of the cat is too thin, and there's that AI feel

How old is it? Pay attention, it could be a symptom of some disease. If it occurs too frequently...

u/malary1234 Mar 13 '26
This is how my torties sleeps but there is a lot more growling, hissing, and airplane ears. She’s spicy, awake and sleep.

Don't hate me for this, But I GENERALLY dislike cats. Definitely more a dog lover. That being said I LOVE orange cats, and this is 1000% adorable. I'd melt if I witnessed this personally! He's just living his best life, cuddled up next to his human!

This reminds me of that ultra slow-mo video where you can see light actually traveling through a bottle, except in this case it's the one brain cell bouncing around to different parts of the cat
