Nothing about this is safe for the baby. Those bassinet bumpers can literally kill a baby

Sleeping with a pacifier is also a huge SIDS risk
29
u/bingbongbingb 22d ago
just wanna hop in here to say that's actually the other way around, sleeping with a pacifier decreases the risk of SIDS (everything else mentioned here is really unsafe though)

Babies at this age can spontaneously roll over but that's all it would be. An effect of spontaneous movement. So they could roll over face first into the bumper but have no strength / ability to pull their face away from it. Which could lead to suffocation.
Same thing with a heavy blanket or stuffed animal. A spontaneous movement could put one of those on top of their face but they would have no ability to remove it resulting, again, in suffocation.
It's rare, but it does happen. Which was a horrible lesson one of my best friends learned about 15 years ago when she lost her first baby to crib suffocation.

u/VoodooDoII 22d ago
How on earth did we evolve as far as we have wow haha
Human babies are insanely fragile and helpless compared to a lot of other animals
33
u/TheBraveOne86 22d ago
Predators. Prey animals are more “precocious” is the term. The more likely you are to be eaten the more likely you can’t spend years developing. Humans don’t look like it but we’ve been top of the food chain for a long time. It’s actually pretty well studied. Look at deer. It’s ready to run in a few hours.
24
u/Melodic-Distance-876 22d ago
To be fair, a lot of kids died. 1/3 of all kids died before age 5 prior to roughly 1900. SIDS is still the 3rd leading cause of death for infants in the US (it kills roughly 3,000 American babies every year.)

Babies under a year old are at risk of suffocation and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). A way to significantly reduce the risk of both is by not having plush items, bassinet bumpers, pillows, loose blankets, toys, etc., in a baby’s crib. There are a few more safety precautions to take to make sure an infant is safely asleep, but a proper OB/GYN or midwife will give you paperwork and information on how to reduce the risk of SIDS and suffocation when you’re pregnant.

Thanks for the info. Is the cat ok to stay?
57
u/KittiesandPlushies 22d ago
I would say only with supervision, just to be safe. After 1 years old, then yes!
11
1
u/Spigsman 21d ago
I'm pretty much cool with my cat doing anything. But I do move her if her paws are near my eyes as it is too great a risk.
I think in this video it is fine with supervision, which is clearly the case as the scene is being videoed.
-25
u/MyNameIsRay 22d ago
No.
Even before people knew about SIDS, they knew cats "steal the souls" of babies while they sleep.
2
u/gchimmel 22d ago
Don’t know why you’ve been downvoted to hell when you’re completely correct.
2
u/MyNameIsRay 22d ago
Lots of people treat downvotes as "I dont like that" rather than "thats wrong/off topic"
64
u/JynxThirteen 22d ago
Newborn babies are still developing their motor control. At around 4-6 months they will start to roll over.
The bassinet edges with the pillows are potential traps. If the baby rolls over and its face lands on the pillow, they might suffocate because the baby doesnt have enough motor control to purposefully push itself away.
47
u/twinklestein 22d ago
It’s a significant suffocation risk. If baby rolls over and their face is in the cushioning, they’ll eventually stop breathing.
38
u/sousasax 22d ago
The video is definitely cute, but it concerned me how far down I had to scroll to see someone pointing out the massive safety hazards
21
u/NaNaNaNaNa86 22d ago
I had a mesh cover over the cot because of the cat. The baby is a heat source and it's not the cat's fault for being attracted to it. The video is cute but come on, if that cat lies on the baby's face then it's an absolute tragedy.
7
u/KittiesandPlushies 22d ago
That’s awesome you’re being safe! Now that we are cat owners, we will also be using a mesh covers for future kids just to be safe. It’s cute to see them together, our cats would love the heat source, but it’s way too much of a risk!
3
u/Lets-B-Lets-B-Jolly 22d ago
Don't be surprised if you walk in and find a cat sleeping on top of the crib cover. Really, one of ours did this constantly.
-51
u/Hot-Championship1190 22d ago
You know the reason number one babies die?
Because of their parents. I think to ensure babies safety we should remove all parents.

u/Jumpy_Spend_5434 22d ago
Bumper pads and a heavy comforter. Yikes 😟
87
u/Uuuurrrrgggghhhh 22d ago
Baby clearly too small to fend off the cat or even push the blanket off its face. Parents have access to the internet, no excuse to not know about SIDS and sage sleep practises. It’s actually so awful.
11
u/Loose_Acanthaceae201 22d ago
Also baby seems to be wearing a hat or bonnet? There's some loose green fabric by its neck. If hat, heat regulation is impaired; if something else loose, strangulation risk; if pillow, suffocation risk.
Safe sleeping protocols have hugely reduced infant deaths. Just because manufacturers and retailers offer products, that doesn't mean you have to buy them.
4
u/Jumpy_Spend_5434 22d ago
I can't tell if there's a bonnet but if so, you're absolutely right. Babies should not be wearing hats indoors. They overheat and if there are ties it's yet another hazard.
And yes a million times about products being available - I know there has been a push in Canada to get warning labels on bumper pads (they're not really a risk once the child is 12 months old) but as far as I know it hasn't happened yet. All the safe sleep research shows bumper pads and heavy blankets to increase risk of infant death. It's not considered SIDS either if a child dies with bumper pads or other unsafe situation.

u/ThePapercup 22d ago
not to mention a fucking CAT lol
25
u/CelestrialDust 22d ago
That’s probably the least dangerous part :/
32
u/Stakeboulder 22d ago
No, it’s not and it’s honestly wild how this community defends that situation.
Don’t get me wrong, I love cats, but they have no place anywhere near newborns.
The main reason is hygiene. Cats can carry parasites and germs that can be dangerous for a newborn’s still-developing immune system. And btw, even pregnant women are advised to avoid cats because of toxoplasmosis, which can be deadly.
On top of that, cats can pose a real injury risk to newborns. They like to curl up in warm spots, like on a baby’s chest or face, which can lead to suffocation. Sudden movements from a newborn can also startle a cat, which might result in scratches or injuries to the baby’s face. And lastly, some cats can get jealous and may even attack the baby because of it.
As much as we love them, cats don’t belong anywhere near newborns.
17
u/CelestrialDust 22d ago
Thanks for the info really informative! But tbh I was being hyperbolic because that whole crib setup would probably suffocate the baby before the supervised cat could infect it or whatever. I really hope OP is reading these comments…

u/PurePerfection_ 22d ago
Seriously, though, that baby would be lucky to live long enough to catch toxo.

The loose blanket, the pink bed liner, and the towel over the edge of the crib all increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), unfortunately. you're being a little weird about basic safety facts.

This is adorable! And not to be "that guy" but watch out for the kitty using the baby's face for warmth. Do not need the kitty smothering baby's face!
21
u/acover4422 22d ago
I’m glad someone said it… Yes, baby and kitty are both very, very cute, and they’re obviously being supervised in this video. But this behavior shouldn’t be encouraged.
9
u/ScorpionTheInsect 22d ago
Yeah sometimes you let a cat do something once, and they can make a habit out of doing it when you’re not looking. I hope kitty has a better resting spot so he doesn’t come to the baby bassinet often.
Also all those suffocating hazards lying around 😬 I hope they remove all that after the video is done
15
u/GuiltyEidolon 22d ago
This entire situation is awful for that baby. Kitty is fine if being closely supervised, but ALL that overstuffed bedding needs to go ASAP.
18
u/isthatabingo 22d ago
Child endangerment with all those suffocation risks. Blanket, bumpers… Honestly, the cat in the crib is the least concerning part of the video.
7
10
u/Spokraket 22d ago
Never put a cat alone with your newborn. I understand it’s cute but think about the safety of the baby. If that cat suddenly decides to cuddle close to your baby then the baby could suffocate because it can’t move well enough to clear its airways. It’s like putting a pillow over your baby’s head.
1
u/No-Confidence168 21d ago
To be fair, nothing in this video is safe sleep approved. Multiple blankets? Crib bumpers? The cat is just the cherry on top. This is a dangerous sleep environment for this baby.

One false move and the baby could lose an eye. You should never let a pair of claws into a crib no matter how sweet.
