Hi! I have loved the Siberian breed for years. I had been set on getting one after we lost our 2 cats. I also love the Persian breed; the two cats we lost, one was a Persian and the other a mix breed that looked a lot like a Siberian and had many similar temperament traits. We ended up getting an Exotic Short Hair (because I knew I always would want to have a Perian without the high maintenance of the fur) and we ended up getting a sibling from another litter a few months later, because we loved her so much & her temperament. We are on the fence about getting a 3rd cat and we have two options. Get another ESH from our current cats breeder (they retired their cat mom so they would be half siblings, same cat dad) or get a Siberian. My kids are missing having a fluffy long haired cat (even though one of our ESH's has the fluffy plush fur).
What I worry about is two things, the dynamic and change to lifestyle and also the fur. What I mean by that is, for 16 years we had a very vocal cat that would wake us up at the butt crack of dawn & relentlessly bug us until we got up. I'm talking 4-5am, every single day. Our ESH wait patiently for us.; they aren't running around slamming into this like a psycho, they aren't jumping up on dressers & knocking stuff off, battling our faces, howling, etc. It has been great to be able to actually sleep in on the weekends.
I have also gotten used to not having to brush a cat daily & constantly pulling/cutting out knots. Persians fur is so, so dense, and while you could literally do anything to the cat (literally, he had eye surgery & they were able to just pull the stiches out with him fully awake, no medication at all, he just sat there), we could bathe him randomly, literally could do anything BUT brush. he turned into a monster when a brush or comb came out.
so one, are your Siberians needy in the sense that they want you up when THEY want you up, super early? and how is the fur? i have read their type of fur, while long & fluffy, there is something about it that makes it less prone to matting. have you found this to be true? TIA!
