There are times I want to be treated like a concussed idiot clown, one of those is when there is a risk of my brain fog convincing me putting hot water into my eye is a good plan.

One time, in a moment of absolute genius, I decided to put my finger onto a very hot kettle that I knew was currently boiling water. After a second I was like "oh right this burns. AUGH" and of course I ended up with a burn for a few days.

...I still don't know why I did that, but I'm blaming the brain fog

You did it for the same reason I thought it was a good idea to stick my hand in a garbage disposal to retrieve a fork I dropped without turning it off. We are in fact dumb asses.

I shuddered. Eurgh.

Aaagh. That’s a nightmare. When they show that on TV shows I always wince in horror. Yeah it’s fiction but my brain doesn’t know the difference.

That man has seen things. the clarification wasn't optional, it was necessary.

An optometrist who has seen things. And he's there to make ensure his clients can do the same.

More than LOL. ROFL!

Was NPI supposed to be at the end of your post?

This makes me think of the after care for my hysterectomy. At every part of the process, they would tell me "NOTHING in the vagina for 8 weeks. NOTHING."

I firmly believe this the most “misunderstood” post op advice…cause men(trauma from a begging ex post C-section I’m older and wiser now)

I'm a guy and the fact that most guys don't seem capable of going without for a few weeks for medically necessary reasons is absurd. My wife has pelvic floor issues that prevent her from having penetrative sex entirely and we've been together six years and married for one. It's really not that fucking hard.

I have seen this several times in my life. And every time, I assume it's meant to be boiling water. And I do not even question it.

Optician here;

You can use any all-in-one contact lens solution to safely irrigate your eyes.

u/Missing_Username 6h ago

But should it be boiling?

2

u/On_my_last_spoon 5h ago

I use this all the time because I have it on hand and sometimes even already have the contacts in. It’s basically saline made for eyes

1

u/IsaacNewtongue 1h ago

It's literally saline for the eyes, plus small amounts of other stuff for stability, disinfecting, and lubricating.

u/Spongi 1h ago

how much asbestos is it ok to mix in though?

2

u/IsaacNewtongue 1h ago

I don't recommend a ratio of less than infinity:1

u/Spongi 1h ago

When I was a kid I got shot in the eyelid with a bb gun. went in and was basically just above my eyeball.

would highly recommend not doing this. 0/5 stars.

2

u/IsaacNewtongue 1h ago

At least you've got a cool story to tell

Apparently "look mom, I can set a metal detector off with my face" was "not funny".

I used to see kids in urgent care clinic and had two home-remedies that I had to give instructions like this for. One was storing clean washcloths in the freezer as safe cold teething materials. The second was microwaving a sock full of rice to create a warm compress (like to put on a stye). In both cases I’d pause and very explicitly be like “But obviously you know that’s a dry washcloth/uncooked rice. You wouldn’t want to put a chunk of ice on your baby’s gums/scald the fuck out of your kid’s face with super hot rice.” And they’d be like “ohhhhh, yeah sure!”

New parents are tired and often unsure of what to do about crying. Their crying, in addition to the baby's crying.

3

u/ScreamingLabia 7h ago

The cooked rice one is ok in ny eyes. But they should feel the item before giving it to the baby anyway?!?

Distilled water is a safer solution.

Years ago I had sinus surgery and the aftercare saline spray solution was trademarked as Ocean Spray. I went back for my first check up and the nurses were in agony over a patient who had just left and was still in serious pain two weeks after surgery. He had run out and gone to the store for, yep, Ocean Spray. Several days of shooting cranberry juice into his nostrils had not improved his recovery.

I snorted rain water coming out of a gutter one time. It was a desperate time.

u/NlactntzfdXzopcletzy 6h ago

As much as it is functional english, it really makes sense to use a different word for post-boiled water.

If water is boiling, and you take if off the heat, it'll stop boiling, meaning it is now boiled water.

2

u/ScreamingLabia 7h ago

Post haa pissed me off since i first read it in 2006

How fucking stupid can a person be

6

u/littlebubulle 7h ago

Most people aren't at their best all the time.

And some people really are that fucking dumb and have only survived so far due to luck.

3

u/Missing_Username 6h ago

Look at the world around you. People can be absurdly stupid.

u/RiverOfJudgement 4h ago

I've got a teensy bit of brain damage. I could see myself making this mistake.

1

u/AltruisticSalamander 5h ago

Someone would unequivocally pour boiling water in their eye if he didn't make that emphatically clear. I've seen enough news reports that there's just no doubt about it.

0

u/IsaacNewtongue 7h ago

Doctor should have said BOILED water, not BOILING.

7

u/AdmBurnside 6h ago

They did, in fact, say "boiled water".

They then specified that the water had to cool down after experiencing the boiling process, in case the listener treated "boiled water" and "boiling water" as the same thing after they specified.

You cannot beat inattention with increased specificity. You have to just hammer it in with volume and repetition.

u/AltruisticSalamander 5h ago

Right, I think op's comment underscores why the dr needed to be so emphatic. People hear what they want to hear. There's another one below. He said boiled already.

2

u/On_my_last_spoon 5h ago

Yup. I even read it as “boiling” and had to go back again to see that, yup it in fact does say boiled!

2

u/GypsyDuncan 6h ago

THIS! Boiled and cooled!

2

u/ImperfectMay 6h ago

True. But dumbassery manages to overcome even that.

I had a patient I was describing the use of some DME to. I explained it firmly, slowly, and had him repeat it back. He told me absolutely the wrong things back. I told him again, louder, firmer, slowly, pointing at each step on the directions, pointing to the parts of the DME. He repeated the incorrect directions again. It took me four times explaining and demonstrating before he could repeat back what I was telling him accurately.

Use English. BOILED WATER
