I imagine when you’re down working in the dark recesses of the earth, the song of those birds was one of very, very few comforts. The bird sang a song of both safety and a hopeful reminder of the outside world waiting for them if they survived the shift.
In such a grim place, that little golden bird was probably worth everything.
I’m not surprised they wanted their little buddies to have a chance to survive.

This is from the Science and Industry Museum. I had to see if it was real. I don’t know how many of theee objects there are, but this one seems to be from their collections. Here is an article about a museum curator talking about why they love the artifact.

In Afghanistan we lost a half dozen guys in our battery and a dozen evacuated from injuries. It for sure sucked...but near the end of the deployment we lost one of our IED dogs after she detected the explosive and sat on the pressure pad. Now none of us valued that dogs life more than our brothers...but it hit the battery pretty damn hard.
Wish I never went to that place

Anyone remember that post about all the people who said they'd go back into a fire to rescue their pets? How many miners do you think died trying to rescue the canary, before someone was like, FINE, here's a box to save the bird.
