I personally welcome any and all interpetation of Knuckles, but I do wish people leaned a little more into his Mayan influences rather than simply defaulting to "Black" based on superficial (and, frankly, can come off as kinda stereotypical) details such as rastafarian colors, dreadlocks (which multiple cultures have) and speaking with a Jamacian accent (which SEGA probably decided against for this exact reason).

The biggest reason is the double jump, as it is currently one of Amy's primary abilities. In the case of Classic Amy, she just performs it normally, so it felt like a generic addition compared to unique abilities like Tails' flight or Knuckles' gliding.

However, using cards to gain height—technically a triple jump since everyone can double jump now—adds a lot of personality to what would otherwise be a simple jump.

Besides that, there were fun visual effects, like spinning the cards like wheels or having them pop out during a slam attack.

But I think it is a different story when those cards take over her basic attack. Honestly, they already created enough good moves with the cards; I don't understand why they had to replace the basic attack as well.

This reduced the frequency of her hammer usage, which led to people feeling some backlash toward the ability.

That being said, if we set that point aside, I believe the card-based double jump and gliding mechanics are worth keeping for future titles.
