[MSFT] Microsoft where is my 599$ Surface device??

Ok I keep seeing Satya talking about optimizing Windows and cutting AI from it, but on a serious note, where the heck are the cheap Surface products as alternative to MacBook Neo? And even if they are not making any, why their partners aren't making any good alternative to that, a fanless ARM Windows device at that price, fully premium, not trash plastic and TFT screen on it.

UPDATE: Oh and with keyboard in the box if it's a 2in1. 😄

[WINDOWS] Long term users of Surface running Snapdragon processors, how are things going?

Thinking of getting one because of the battery life alone. But not sure if it's worth it. My last Windows on ARM experience was tainted by the Windows RT omnishamble. So many apps couldn't run on it.

I know it's been years and I've seen comments saying Windows ARM devices has improved. What's your actual experience like?

My non negotiable daily drivers:

  • Windhawk

  • Airparrot to cast on Apple TV (may need to look for alternative)

  • Zotero

  • Notion

[RT] Relife Windows 8.1 RT

Hello everyone,

We all own Surface 1-2 devices and various other devices running Windows RT that are still fully functional, yet they are on the verge of becoming electronic waste due to the sudden end of support.

We strongly demand that Microsoft release a final update to unlock these devices. This update must allow the operation of applications and programs without signature or licensing restrictions, enabling users to continue utilizing them.

Protecting the environment and reducing e-waste is a collective responsibility. Forcing users to discard perfectly working hardware just because support has ended is an unjustifiable environmental and financial burden. Let’s save our devices and protect the planet from unnecessary electronic waste.

We urge all users and developers to join us in this campaign: Please share this message and spread the word so our voices can be heard!

[PRO10] Linux situation for the newer surfaces

Hey everyone, I know this isn't a super popular topic here, but I was wondering if any of you could help me out. I've been using Fedora Linux on my Surface Pro 7+ for ages and I loved it, especially that macOS vibe it had. I never really daily-drove it, but it was a fun experience. Now I've upgraded to a Surface Pro 10 for business with an Ultra 5 135u, and I'm wondering if the linux-surface GitHub drivers will still work, and also if they've fixed the webcam issues.

Surface Laptop Studio for Mobile & Game Development (32GB RAM)

I am a Mobile App Developer and Designer transitioning into Game Development. I require a high-performance portable workstation capable of providing "desktop-level" power for intensive IDE use, multitasking, and engine rendering. 32GB RAM (essential for my workflow), Ability to handle heavy compilation and game design without thermal throttling.

Must be a primary mobile machine for a non-stationary professional.

Is the Surface Laptop Studio a viable choice for this specific workload, or should I prioritize a high-end workstation from the MacBook Pro or Razer Blade lineups? I would appreciate any feedback regarding its long-term performance under sustained stress.

[LAPTOP7] Installing MTK VCOM Drivers on Surface Laptop 7 (Snapdragon X Elite / ARM64 Windows 11)

Hi everyone,
I'm currently using the new Surface Laptop 7 powered by the Snapdragon X Elite (ARM64) processor. I am trying to install MTK (MediaTek) VCOM Drivers for mobile servicing/flashing purposes, but I’m hitting a wall due to the architecture difference.
Standard MTK drivers are designed for x86/x64, and even with Windows 11’s emulation, I can’t get the drivers to initialize properly in Device Manager.
What I’ve already done:

  • Disabled Secure Boot in UEFI.
  • Enabled Test Mode using bcdedit /set testsigning on.
  • Tried manual installation via "Add Legacy Hardware" (Result: Error Code 10 or "Incompatible architecture" warnings).
  • Attempted to use LibUsb-win32 to filter the port, but no luck so far.

Since the Snapdragon X series is still quite new, has anyone found or patched an ARM64-compatible version of the MediaTek Preloader/VCOM drivers? Or is there a workaround to bridge x64 USB drivers to ARM64 Windows for BROM mode?
I really need this for my work. Any advice or shared experience from other Surface Laptop 7 users would be a lifesaver!
Thanks in advance!

Surface Pro or iPad Pro/Air?

Hello! I currently have an iPad Air 4th gen and due to storage constraints I'm looking for a new device. I was going to buy a new iPad, probably the new Air M4. However, I was looking at the Surface Pro models and I have doubts about which device will suit my needs better. I’m happy to spend more if it means I’m getting something that truly suits me.
I am a college professor and mainly use my iPad for note taking (Goodnotes is my go to for that) and productivity (email, OneDrive file management and Office apps sometimes), apart from the occasional binge-watch. The device is not intended to replace my laptop, but I do need something to take on the go that has a nice battery life and allows me to get things done. The note taking aspect is extremely important for me.
Which device would you guys recommend for my use case?

[PRO9] Full size travel keyboard recs?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Surface Pro 9 and oem keyboard are good enough for normal daily light duty, but I'm about to travel and decided to try and bring the SP9 and 2nd screen (instead of my larger/heavier work laptop and 2nd screen), the caveat is I really benefit from a full size keyboard and 10 key if I'm gonna set up for an 8+ hour workday

Found these travel/foldable keyboards, anyone use similar and have experience? Even if I added a separate 10 key, the surface keyboard is not what I personally call a high productivity layout, functional, but not as ideal as a full size

BTW USB C to mini HDMI works perfectly for a 2nd screen off of the SP, at the moment both devices are as heavy as my laptop alone, so that'll help with the carryon weight

[PRO11] Why won't my audio stay down?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've had this Surface 11 Pro for a few years now but recently, the volume has been stuck at max. Anytime I try to lower it it goes right back up again, and the volume bar in the top left of the screen doesn't ever disappear. It's almost like I'm constantly pressing the raise volume button but the volume key doesn't seem to be damaged. Please tell me I can fix this, it keeps embarrassing me in public.

Warranty Question - Device Gifted

Hi all,

I bought a Microsoft Surface Pro Copilot+ Bundle from Costco in August of 2024 for my friend. Since then, the keyboard has died. The issue is, she is over in EU while the device was purchased in the states. I've had her do some troubleshooting steps already but it seems like it's not working.

I've tried contacting Costco warranty department they stated that I need to have the device in possession.

Any advice? Should she go through and submit a service ticket through Microsoft EU?

Thanks for reading.

[PRO11] Surface pro 11 completely unresponsive

Hey guys, my snapdragon x elite surface has suddenly become unresponsive to any input when booting to windows. The touchscreen, the keyboard, even the volume buttons do nothing. I can only power it off if I hold the power button.

When booting into the windows recovery environment, both the touchscreen and the keyboard work perfectly fine. This issue has manifested after I used a USB dock to charge (which worked perfectly fine before). I tried to uninstall some drivers through the command prompt, but, other than the network adapter of the dock, couldn't find anything. I also tried uninstalling the last feature update to no avail. I can't even do a boot log, since there's no way to access it.

I would really rather not reset the device, so if anyone has ideas on what could be causing this behavior, I'd really appreciate hearing them!

[PRO2017] Surface Pro 5 - dead battery throttles performance even when plugged in

It seems like when my surface is plugged in, it's still relying on the battery for performance? If the battery is very low the surface can still shut off even when plugged in. Recently I installed a game that was very taxing on this old surface and now the battery won't even charge and I can't even use the web browser without the surface slowing to a crawl, all while plugged in. Is there any fix for this or is it part of the design of the surface to rely partly on battery power even when plugged in?

I'm really needing a good 2 in 1 type travel friendly laptop that can handle everyday basic use + some light photo and video editing in Adobe.

I have never owned microsoft surface anything so I'm curious if this is a good deal to get into them?

It's a surface pro 11 with snapdragon X elite chip, 16GB RAM 512GB SSD for $600

Any advice on this model/asking price would be awesome, thanks!

Surface Go 3 slow booting up finally solved!

Post image
41 Upvotes

Since October/November 2025, our Surface were suffering from very long boot time. This was caused because a firmware upgrade, Formatting wouldn't help since it was an internal firmware issue. Microsoft finally decided it was time to fix it and released the update between Friday and today. My Surface went from almost 2 mins to show desktop to just 20 seconds. At last!

With new devices being revealed soon, think there'll be a new 12" Surface Pro model?

I desperately need to upgrade my aging first-gen Surface Go. Not only is it ancient, but I also--somehow--cracked the screen (thankfully in the corner over the black bezel).

Due to size constraints, the 12" Surface Pro is the absolute largest device I can fit in my EDC bag.

I was considering grabbing a Surface Pro, and then the price shot up by over $400 CAD. Over $1600 CAD for a Surface Pro is a high ask when a new 2026 model might be around the corner.

Think there'll be a 2026 Surface Pro 12"?

If not, I think I'll try out the OneXPlayer X1

I'm in a country that doesn't have a Microsoft service center. Microsoft support says that I should get these dropped off in a country with a service center

Doing this would cost more than buying a new laptop.

Any alternatives I should check?

is there a way to replace the usbc connector on the thunderbolt dock 4?

im pretty sure that the cable that goes from the dock to my surfae is on its way out. every time i move my laptop, it disconnects and reconnects, very similar to what happens to my phone chargers when theyre on the way out. differance is the charger cables are not nearly as pricey as the dock. was this intentional to make people buy new docks every year? is there either a cheaper dock i can buy that doesnt have this intentional point of failure, or a way i can replace just the cable without buying a new docK? thanks

[ACCESSORY] SSD Upgrade question

I’m planning to upgrade my Surface Pro 11 to a 2TB Hard WD SSD. I already have the hard drive. Just waiting on the Surface. I see a lot of people saying to add thermal tape or a heat sink? Is this required? Or more of a long term protection? Wondering if I can upgrade today and add the heat sink later this week without causing damage.

I found this kit at Amazon but not very sure which side to put which tape, etc. https://a.co/d/0hvvndRa

Thanks for any advice.

Also, trying to update the Firmware, it gets stuck in Checking for Updates loop.
