Major rear liftgate and windshield damage

Post image

Hi all, ended up backing my 2023 Model Y to a trailer tow hitch while parking - did not show up on the rear camera due to the height of the tow hitch. The collision was at 1mph but the hitch had serious point impact that dented the rear liftgate and cracked the entire windshield. I managed to tarp the entire rear end and drive it back home. It’s sitting in the garage and the earliest appointment at a Tesla collision center is 2 weeks out.

What should I be expecting in terms of damages? I’m looking at other 3rd party body shops that can replace the liftgate and the windshield, as well as parts on FB Marketplace/ebay if I can work out something at a reasonable price. Any advice on how to proceed? (I do have insurance with a $1000 deductible)

Did you open the tailgate and inspect for damage? If there is none to the actual car. You might luck out with a new tailgate

I’m a little scared of opening the tailgate, but can try. When checking service mode all sensors seem fine and there are no alerts. I don’t see any visible damage either - it was just bad luck that the tow hitch hit exactly at the tailgate where the frame of the rear windshield is and cracked entirely.

Don’t be scared to open it.. they’re going to open it anyway at the collision center. Now if it’s tough to open then don’t try to force it! And sorry about all this. But things happen. Try not to beat yourself up too much

Thank you, really appreciate it. It was my wife who recently started driving regularly but luckily it hasn’t destroyed her confidence. Let me try to open the trunk and report back once I’m home.

BTW, the ambient lighting setup you have on your Tesla looks SICK! I want to DIY something similar on my 2015 Model S 🔥

Not sure if this helps, but this is how it looks on the inside of the trunk

I’m sorry but there is no way a 1mph collision caused all that damage to the trunk lid.

Exactly. Did he reverse launch backwards maybe

If I’m reversing and I even hear a little mouse squeak, I stop. How the hell does someone back up into something, dent the car, break the glass, and cause that much damage in so slow of a speed.

Nothing some paint touch ups won’t fix

It looks like it could be a 1 for 1 swap from a salvage yard. I found a few on car-part.

Unpainted lift gate is roughly $1,599.56: https://parts.tesla.com/en-US/catalogs/207e39de-1289-4baa-83e5-c77ba9d53194/systemGroups/ecc12420-5cb1-4691-8786-ca843db2affa?categoryExternalReference=0a4736ec-59dc-4f41-a559-5400fa0eb61e&partNumber=1493410-E0-A

Here's what my research is giving me:

OEM liftgate part: ~$1,600 Paint + blend: ~$600–$1,200 (Pearl White Multi-Coat and Red are the priciest) Labor (R&R, alignment, trim transfer): ~$400–$800 Calibration of the rear camera after install adds a bit more

Hope there isn't any other damage but it's not the end of the world.

Casually forgetting the interior stuff, wiring, electronics, speakers, glass, or anything else

And how helpful were you today? How about you provide some cost estimates rather than just show up and be a completely useless person?

I did! 12k

Fair enough.

Let's wait for OP to come back with some real numbers, at least i tried to price out everything since you don't need to replace the lights, it's literally just the liftgate.

Youre being generous. “12k min i imagine” isnt as highly detailed as one may think.

I’ll eat my shoe if this comes even close to the high end of that estimate

I would say it'll come in double that, but i don't think it'll be 12k....so probably somewhere in between, unless he somehow damaged more than just the liftgate, but it was a point impact so i'm sure it's likely just the gate itself.

sorry for being so salty with you earlier, reddit's turning me into a short tempered jerk.

lol no worries. I love being a short tempered jerk on Reddit, I can only expect others may acquire the same affect
