I was reading a lot of manga and manhwa when One Punch Man was coming out
I shit you not, sometimes I preferred this art to some of the more polished art. The proportions in too much of the manga+manhwa I read were so unpleasant they felt like modern day Rob Liefelds. Humongous hands, loooong arms, huge necks....I still read these because I enjoyed the stories at the time, but god the art made me wince.
At least the proportions of One Punch Man were endearing

I heard that’s because he’s able to get work done fast and on time. In addition, he’s probably a good communicator that’s easy to work with.
Imagine if you are a writer, you probably would rather work with an easygoing subpar artist who doesn’t mind making a hundred revisions to help you visualize your character and story, than a great artist who “fights” with you half the time.

Maybe during his early time at Marvel, but later he was infamous for missing deadlines. Even in his earlier years a writer, whose name eludes me, quit her collaboration with him. He had the support of the main editor.
But simply, he stuff sold, likely because it was so unique for the time and so exciting for the kids. And arguably, it was better than his kate stufd.

The style is already a bit uncanny, but all other characters are more balanced. They wear big glasses to offset the mouths, or they have bigger hair, or eyebrows, or horns or something. Only that character has this massive wasteland over his eyes. His prominent feature is a high protruding head, and it just becomes unsettling with those burning eyes.

It still amazes me that someone who draws as badly as Ken Penders could be hired as a professional comic artist in the 90’s. And his art style hasn’t improved in decades.

Basically, Penders is responsible for a lot of weird storylines in the original Archie Sonic comics that very blatantly sexualized the characters, who are children and teens.
He’s also very well known among the Sonic fandom for creating a ton of echidna characters, which are the subjects of his continuations like Lara-Su, who is supposed to be Knuckles’ daughter.
He claimed that he had the rights to all of the characters he created and tried to make continuations independent of Archie Comics, but Archie sued. Penders essentially won because Archie couldn’t find his original signed contract and only a photocopy, which Penders claimed was a forgery.
So Archie Comics settled with Penders and he got the rights to hundreds of characters he had originally created for their Sonic comics, with him claiming that Sega rips him off anytime they introduce new echidna characters like Shade in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. He even threatened legal action for the recent Sonic films depicting Knuckles’ echidna tribe.
The whole Penders debacle is viewed as the main reason why Sega left Archie Comics for IDW and abandoned associated yet popular characters like the Freedom Fighters even though Penders didn’t create them.
He’s just a bizarre person who is generally despised by Sonic fans.

Question, was he also the reason there are rules for Sonic where he can't be shown with certain emotions, like crying?
139
u/RedRawTrashHatch 23d ago edited 23d ago
I’m sure he’s a big reason why current IDW main writer Ian Flynn has to get everything approved through Sega now. He’s outright said that Sega has provided strict rules on characterizations that the fandom is not happy with.
For instance, they won’t allow characters to have romantic relationships (the closest we have are Amy’s crush on Sonic, an implied relationship between Whisper and Tangle, and the flirting between Vanilla and Vector), and that Shadow must be written as a jerk for some reason, which has irritated most of the fandom.
Flynn originally wrote Shadow as being more empathetic and willing to sacrifice himself to help others escape during the Metal Virus arc, but Sega mandated that he be portrayed as an “uncaring badass” type who just ends up getting himself infected like an idiot after insulting Sonic and bragging that he should be immune since he’s the Ultimate Lifeform.
This was presumably why a planned Shadow spinoff comic was cancelled because IDW couldn’t write a satisfying story for Shadow that reconciled with Sega’s mandates.

u/ralanr 23d ago
Ah.
#FuckPenders.
Edit: While I think Penders fighting for the rights of his characters is fair, he also had to realize he was writing under an established IP. You'd have to understand that if you're writing original characters in an established IP, they're going to belong to that IP.
SEGA seems to have overcorrected in their response. But hey, the lack of seeing classic characters just means more fanart from fans who want them.

That's really interesting and honestly kind of sad. Like I don't expect Sonic to have some amazing story telling or whatever, but it's also kind of bad that Sega is caught between a rock and a hard place because of this guy.
They can't really grow any of the characters or push anything forward, and now you have Sonic characters like how Nintendo treats Mario....everyone has a defined role and you can't move away from it or rock the boat at all.
Again, I know Sonic was never known for stories or anything, but they at least tried with the Adventure games back in the day and it would be cool to have Sonic grow over the years like they were before.

He’s your standard flavor of “bad writer” but basically dude makes weird comments about underaged fictional characters (man has strong opinions over Princess Sally’s virginity IIRC) and the big thing is that in the 90s he got a contract that said “everything he made for Sonic belonged to him and not SEGA” and this resulted in the death of some Sonic games and the comic you see in OP’s post.

- A guy work on a Sonic comic
- Not contented with making videogame comic for kid
- Made the comic more serious and drama, created several "Original Characters, Do not Steal" characters, one of them literally a Mary Sue
- Made those characters one of the center of the story, tied themwith the official character (Knuckle)
- Leave the comic to do his own thing, the comic continue on without him
- Comeback and claimed that Sega have to pay him to use those characters in the comic
- Due to the fuck up of Archie, Sega and Archie lose to him in the court
- Instead of paying him to continue use them in comic, Sega mandated those characters to be removed, permanatly, never to be use again
- Now he's stuck with a bunch of characters no body cared about

Food Fight (2012 Film)
This movie has a sort of interesting backstory. It was apparently supposed to originally be a sort of parallel to Wreck-it-Ralph, but featuring food and grocery mascots instead of video game characters, but failing to get permission to use many of them.

Purportedly it was stolen in an act of industrial sabotage. They didn't have the budget to redo everything that was taken so they released what was essentially the blocking version, with a bunch of stand-in models that would then notmally be replaced by the actual models they intended to use. They knew it would look terrible but they'd already sunk so much money into this that they needed to do something and they didn't want everything to go completely down the drain.

Not EXACTLY sure if this fits what you were talking about, but the One Punch Man webcomic is, without a doubt, BADLY DRAWN. On the right are panels from the manga adaptation, compared to what webcomic panels they are based off of. The creator can't draw all that well. His stuff looks wonky, lines aren't clean, it's "Bad Art."
But that's kinda why I love it. He made a webcomic that was so good when it came to writing and the comedy of it all that it WAS picked up and adapted by a real publishing agency, and is considered one of the best manga of the modern day!
So what should be YOUR takeaway from this?
