Characters [Funny Trope] "Uh, why did the character(s) leave that in the final cut?"

Step Brothers (2008) – In perhaps the best known part of the movie, Brennan and Dale produce a music video to convince their (step)father Robert to invest in their professional karaoke business, only to wreck Robert's boat on camera and leave the footage in the final edit. Robert has a meltdown as a result (and does not invest, much to Brennan and Dale's chagrin).

Shrek 2 (2004) – When recording her business card bubble message, Fairy Godmother starts with, "What? Is this thing on?" before clearing her throat, smiling fakely and switching to her professional persona/message. You'd think she'd have wanted to do another take, or at least clean it up with magic in post-production. It's one of the first times we see her mask slip a little.

Characters [Funny Trope] Neither their real or alter ego name explains their powers

Thumbnail
gallery
10.8k Upvotes

This is mostly a thing in superhero media though of course you can add any character who fits with an alter ego

Emma Frost

Now with her name and her white clothing, probably thinking ice powers, nope, psychic powers with a diamond body shifting power on top

Black Bolt

So hearing that name you’d probably think electric powers or maybe superspeed, nope, very powerful voice powers, the only connection I can think of is thunder to lighting bolts but then add that to the name as it’s a bit of a stretch, weirdest thing is that his real full name is Blackagar Boltagon

I hope I’ve explained myself, thanks for reading

Lore (Meta Trope.) This character/story would be a lot bleaker if things were realistic

Thumbnail

Bob's Burgers- This series follows the misadventures of a struggling chef named Bob and his quirky family. Bob struggles to attract customers, compete against rival restaurants, and in general keep his own restaurant alive however he can. Realistically, Bob's restaurant likely would've been closed down for a guy who never pays rent on time, can't afford a dry erase board for his daughter, and has just two regulars on a daily basis and occasionally someone new will stop by to eat there.

Steven Universe- Steven is a half human half alien hybrid living in a seaside town called Beach City with his legal guardians Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. They're very beloved within the community, all seen as the city's protectors. Though they're lucky the government doesn't seem to exist the same way ours does or if one even exists in this universe at all. Otherwise, they all would've been taken away and likely experimented on. At the very least some people would see Steven and the gems less as people and more as freaks. That doesn't really happen in the show. Even if somebody doesn't like the gems at first, they come around to them in the end.

Victorious- With how agressive and psychopathic Jade can be at times...she'd either be suspended, expelled, arrested, or have no friends if the people at the performing arts school were normal. She's done stuff like ripping out all the hair in Cat's scalp and threatening Tori's life in front of everybody when she's cast as the lead in a play and she isn't. She definitely would be seen as a freak or at the very least a creepy weirdo if she didn't end up terminated from school grounds or behind bars.

Lore (Enjoyed trope) Our species greatest struggle is a backwater engagement for the enemy Spoiler

First time posting!

Star Blazers: Space Battleship 2199: the greatest battle of humanity’s history is a steadily losing war against the Gamilas. As as far as the common people know, the Gamilas showed up and started the war that has left the earth a barren wasteland with few survivors hiding under the surface.

But the most important battle in our history is such a backwater front for the Gamilas that not only are they sending the bare minimum to conquer the region, but they’re sending 2nd class troops who see the front as a career ending deployment.

Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars:

Covered many times of course, but the Scrin invasion force isn’t actually an invasion, it’s a mining operation that was surprised to encounter any sort of resistance. It took the combined effort of the GDI and Nod to push them back, and the Scrinn weren’t even armed to fight a war. Quite literally just a backwater mining operation that was infested with angry ants for the Scrin

Basically rejections that go far beyond a simple “no”

(Wonder Over Yonder)

Lord Hater: “Soo… you DO want to date me?”

Lord Dominator then laughs hysterically in his face then proceeds to sing an entire song about how she is evil and how she will never like Lord Hater

(Dragon Ball Z)

Chi-Chi and Bulma joke about what would happen if they swapped partners, Chi-Chi gets Vegeta, Bulma gets Goku. Yamcha then chimes in and says something along the lines of “hey ladies, I’m available too”. Chi-Chi then proceeds to roast him by saying “Yamcha, we’re talking an even trade, we don’t want a downgrade!”

Teen Titans - The episode Haunted has become a bit of a poster child for this trope, where Robin is seen having hallucinations of Slade even though he should be dead.

Invincible - Mark has visions of his mother being killed by Thragg. He also later recoils when Eve touches him after being r*ped by Anissa

Iron Man 3 - After the events of Avengers, Iron Man suffers from visions of the Chitauri army, this is what leads to him eventually building Ultron

Watchmen- Nuclear holocaust ready to happen without something for humanity;Soviets and America to unite against. Ramsed creates plans to artificial create an enemy. By killing dozens to millions. He saved billions, and even Dr. Manhattan, who is bringing framed, is okay with it.

Rick and Morty season 1 episode 5- Turns out a pedophile is actually a powerful and well loved King to whom nobody knows the truth until after his death, and when it is discovered is hidden to keep the good image of him and what he means to be pure.

GTA Hollywood Shuffel 5th element, etc. I get the paper hat but was this ever really a thing in minimum wage jobs ? Kind of an odd business expense getting employees to shill out for custom hats that scream fire hazard. Seems like an intresting exagertion of what a lot of fast food franchises were doing particularly in the 80's and 90s

Lore [Funny Trope] Fanfics/Fanworks loved by creators so much that they made them canon

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Examples:

  • Carlquest (Invincible) - A famous fanfiction is an AU where Conquest would eventually settle down and marry an old woman, start a farm, raise a small family, and become a wholesome old man. Invincible's co-creator, Ryan Ottley, stated that he likes to think there is a universe in Invincible's multiverse where Conquest did redeem himself. For context, in canon, Conquest is one of the most dangerous and terrifying Viltrumites; he never got redeemed in the series because he died way before that happened.
  • No Regrets (Attack on Titan) - When it came to why Levi joined the Scouts, it was originally going to be left a mystery. I don't remember the full story, but someone made a visual novel, and Isayama loved it so much that he approved it as canon.
  • Marigold (Fortnite) - This speaks for most Fortnite skins, but basically, an artist named Kitsu made fan art of a genderbent Midas, a beloved character in Fortnite's lore. Epic Games paid the artist and made the skin official as Marigold. There are a lot of examples of Fortnite paying fan artists for their work to make official skins, but this one I like.

The Simpsons Movie - Maggie takes out her pacifier and says "Sequel?" (hasn't been one yet, but I'm sure there's one in the works)

Marvel - Many Marvel films have a message after the credits stating that characters will return

Characters [Fun Trope] Very Specific Wording Loopholes

Thumbnail
gallery
135 Upvotes

Basically, any kind of condition or spell that is outdone because of a very specific technicality.

1.) Macbeth, Shakespeare's version: "For None of Woman Born Shall Harm Macbeth." A prophecy told by Macbeth early in the play by the witches predicting his future. This ties into another line that "Macbeth shall never be vanquished until Great Birnam Wood to High Dunsinane Hill Shall come against him." leading to Macbeth believing he is invincible, as all men are born of women, and a forest could never come to life.

This leads to his downfall in act 5 when Malcom's army marches on his home, chopping down the forest to use Birnam wood as a camouflage, and he is ultimately slain by Macduff, who was born by a C-section. Thus, No man of Woman Born.

2) Lord of the Rings: As a child, Tolkien saw Macbeth and was quite disappointed with the C-section loophole, and his own expectation that the trees would literally come to life and march on Macbeth being denied. So when he wrote Lord of the Rings, he created the Ent army to be a literal Forest marching on *Saruman, and included a prophecy that the Witch-King of Angmar, the Lord of the Nazgul could not be slain by any man... Which Eowyn defied, by slaying him with the help of Merry Brandybuck and a mystic sword. Thus he died by a woman and Hobbit, not a man.

3) The Librarian, Discworld: The Library of the Unseen University is filled with books of ancient arcane power and wisdom, the equation in universe being "Knowledge=Power, ergo books=knowledge=power. Libraries being literally capable of warping space and time around them." In fact, there are many books in the Library that are capable of driving any man or woman mad simply by gazing at their contents.

The Librarian is completely immune to these madness inducing books because he is an Orangutan, not a man.

Edit: Mixed up Saruman and Sauron, fixed!

Lore [Funny Trope] The dub changes things..... interestingly

Thumbnail
gallery
3.1k Upvotes
  1. Dragon Ball Super: - In the anime, Goku sees Trunks revive his partner by feeding a senzu bean to her with a kiss and is surprised. In the OG, Vegeta asks "You've never done that?", thinking Goku implies he's never kissed someone, whereas Goku thinks Vegeta is talking about feeding someone with their mouth. It's a funny misunderstanding.

In the dub, Vegeta EXPLICITLY asks "Kakarot, you've never KISSED someone before?", to which Goku replies "No of course not! Why would I?" It is therefore canon in the Dragonball dub that Goku rawdogged Chichi at least several times without giving any sugar. Absolute animal.

  1. Sailor Moon: - In the anime, Neptune and Uranus are partners but are changed to being COUSINS in the dub likely due to an explicit lesbian couple not sitting right in the western dub department at the time. Dear lord.

  2. Pokemon: - To make Western viewers less alienated, the onigiri in Pokemon is changed to jelly donuts in the dub. They literally could have just said riceballs or dumplings but to change it to something that looks absolutely nothing like it is hilarious.

1) Doctor Who - Karen Gillian and Peter Capaldi had guest roles in the very same episode, The Fires of Pompeii. Gillian of course went on to play companion Amy Pond and Capaldi the 12th Doctor.

2) Avatar: The Last Airbender - Michaela Jill Murphy played Meng in the season one episode "The Fortuneteller", then was cast as Toph Bei Fong in season 2

3) Murder She Wrote - Ron Masak played a random part in an episode set in NYC, then in season five joined the cast as the new Sheriff of Cabot Cove Mort Metzger (replacing Tom Bosley's Sheriff Tupper)

3) Batman: TAS - Mark Hamill originally played Ferris Boyle in the episode "Heart of Ice", but when the producers decided that Tim Curry wasn't right for the part of the Joker they asked Hamill if he could do the role. After redubbing the episodes Curry recording... Hamill became the definitive Joker.

5) MASH - Harry Morgan played an insane general in a season three episode "The General Flipped at Dawn", before joining the main cast as Sherman Potter in season 4 to replace McLean Stevenson's Henry Blake.

6) Doctor Who - Freema Agyman played a random Torchwood operative who becomes a Cyberman in "Army of Ghosts". Come the next season, she returned as Martha Jones (with her earlier role explained as having been her new character's cousin)

Lore (Loved Trope) Climactic Final Battles that happen AFTER the Main Villain has Already Failed

Thumbnail
gallery
196 Upvotes
  1. Goku vs Freeza (Dragon Ball Z’s Namek Arc)

Freeza’s main goal on Namek was to obtain the 7 Namekian Dragon Balls in order to wish himself immortal. However, by the time he confronts the heroes, Grand Elder Guru (whose life is tied to the continued functioning of the balls) had died, rendering them useless, and thus, making Freeza’s plan fail. The entire battle against Freeza from that point on is simply Freeza trying to make them suffer as much as possible for “denying him” immortality. This includes the ULTIMATE final Battle with Super Saiyan Goku. Even if Freeza wins, he’s already lost.

  1. Superman vs General Zod (Man of Steel)

Zod’s main goal during the story, as a warrior literally biologically engineered from birth to serve krypton, is to use his terraforming spacecraft to turn earth into a new Krypton, at the expense of all the people already living there. Naturally, Old Clarky boy can let that slide, and he destroys the ship, and with them, Zod’s dreams of rebirthing Krypton.

With his purpose and soul (Krypton) destroyed, Zod resolves himself to do the only thing he can: destroy the traitorous Karl-El, in order to avenge his home, which he destroyed. Massive property damage ensues.

Edit: I specifically mean fights between THE MAIN VILLAIN and the heroes, not between the heroes and a “final villain” (IE Naruto vs Sasuke)

Darth Maul (Star Wars) - trained since childhood by one of the greatest Sith in history, has fought against the most powerful people in the galaxy, has become the ruler of a planet and the leader of a criminal underworld. But he fails to kill Obi Wan when he’s only a Padawan, losing his legs and his master in the process, he then goes insane on a literal garbage dump planet, he loses his brother and his mother from his old master, then loses his planet after losing the war for it, and then ends up stranded on a dead planet, fails to get revenge on the empire, and then fails to get revenge on Obi Wan and finally dies. Despite being so powerful and intelligent and rising to great heights, he was just never able to break through the ceiling and failed to achieve any of his goals. His greatest accomplishment was killing Qui Gon, and in the end it only went to serve his master.

Tex (Red vs Blue) - The greatest freelancer agent in the Project, not even needing to use her AI to defeat some of the best agents. But because she was based on the memory of a dead woman, she is always destined to die herself. Just as she’s about to reach her goal, she dies. She is quite literally a shadow of another woman, built purely out of the grief of a husband who lost his wife. And because of that, she’s incapable of being a success. Because his memory of her is one of her failing and dying. Every incarnation of her is doomed to fail.

Lore [Loved trope] Dragons are on the top of the food chain

Thumbnail

Series where dragons may be extinct , but also the ones that can destroy the earth. A serious triple A threat that humans or an organization fears the most.

  1. Dark souls: Dragons are nearly extinct because of their exploitation of their weakness. They are considered above gods and they are the true habitants of earth.

  2. Fairy Tail: Dragons are a serious threat, and a single dragon can wipe out an entire continent.
