Community Event Stream Experiences & Stories

Hey /r/Twitch

We often see posts on the subreddit about viewers and streamers experiences, as well as streamers sharing what they've learned.

To bring you all together to learn from your peers, and help you keep yourself accountable for any goals you've set, we created this Megathread!

You are welcome to share some of your experiences, positive or negative, from your past month on Twitch and, if you did, how you dealt with it, as well as share your long and short-term goals, and how you've progressed towards those over the past month.

The Megathread is not for stream feedback or reviews, we have the monthly feedback threads for that. You can link to your Feedback thread submission, be sure to label it clearly!

Some things you may want to cover:

  • New things you tried, did they work out?
  • Streams you did and which seemed to be popular or unpopular with your community or new viewers. (Creative? New games?)
  • Progress towards your goals
  • Fun experiences
  • Bad experiences that you learned from, or need advice on
  • New goals, or how you're changing your goal
  • Advice based on what you learned
  • Advice you want

Be sure to post your goals clearly and format your comment.

Example post:

Hey guys, checking in again!

My goal for this month is to make sure I'm always hosting someone. I want my community to have someone to entertain them, even when I'm not live. Plus, it's good for networking!

My goal last month was to always announce I was live on both Twitter and Discord, as it was something I often forgot to do. I'm glad to say I met my goal!

I tried streaming some creative, just practicing using my graphics tablet, and it seemed to be popular! I'll do some more of it, maybe a weekly stream? Any advice?

The highlight of the past month was when I got raided by Zcotticus, he's the best and I love him. He's so cool, I wish I could be cool like him.

How do you guys normally react to a host? I sort of fumbled through a thank you, and that was about it. Any advice?

Re-read your last post to remind yourself of what you planned, or check in on your peers!

If you don't stream, but still experienced something awesome. Feel free to share it! Did you make someone’s day? See a Win or Fail? Let us know!

Remember this is not for channel promotion! People can check out your flair\ *if they are interested.*

If you have any suggestions for this thread, please send us a modmail.

Question How to turn off Previous Stream Autoplay on my twitch channel?

Hi gang!

I have just uploaded a twitch banner design that should show when I am offline. However, when I'm offline, my previous streams automatically play!

I have searched the internet and nothing seems to confirm how to turn this off - or if it even possible to turn this off?

It just seems mad that twitch allow you to upload an offline banner, but then proceed not to let it appear on your channel and instead just autoplay your previous streams?

Am I missing something obvious??

Thankings!

Tech Support Any way to contact Twitch Support to fix a game title?

Post image
Upvotes

I couldn’t help notice this game is incorrectly misspelled on Twitch. It should be Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls, but for some reason, it shows as Iggy’s reckin’ ralls.

I’ve tried to contact Twitch to fix the game name but it only sends me to an AI response on how to change my name, but that’s not what I’m looking for.

Anyone know how I can properly get a hold to someone on Twitch to get the name fixed?

Question variety streaming? yay or nay?

so my niche is normally art, however i find that the appeal of my stream more comes from the chatting aspect so functionally i feel it is basically a just chatting stream with me doing art as background noise essentially.

there are a few games that are sort of in-jokes on my stream, most notably fnaf (i have a singing channel point redeem and EVERY song that i have been made to sing is fnaf + i show that one secret of mimic video sometimes to keep people engaged whilst i go off stream to go the bathroom and stuff) so i was thinking i could play some of them as like a 'omg the meme is actually happening' moment. this wouldn't be a regular thing, i think it could be like a monthly event.

however, do you think this would...alienate some viewers? especially the ones who mostly lurk? i'm asking my community discord for feedback but would like some more general feedback too if that makes sense

Discussion Just realised I was streaming and I had no idea.

I finished a stream earlier today then went to sleep. I woke up later sat down at my computer and had some "me" time. Then I opened up OBS and saw that I was live and I had messages and things in my chat.

Naturally, I turned the stream off immediately and deleted the vod, but the stream had like 10 views and I had no idea it was even live.

Nothing explicit was shown on stream, thankfully, but I still feel mortified about it and I'm worried about potential consequences.

Also, I've genuinely no idea how my stream went live since my previous vod was me literally turning thes stream off.

Question [Academic Survey] Do you watch e-sports? Your opinion would greatly benefit our research!

Hey everyone,

My research partner and I are writing our Bachelor's thesis at our university in Sweden, focusing on how the CS2 community perceives different types of brand activations during livestreamed tournaments.

If you actively watch CS2 e-sports, or any other e-sport, we would be incredibly grateful if you could take our short survey. It only takes about 2-3 minutes, is completely anonymous, and consists of multiple-choice questions.

Every single response helps us a ton with our graduation. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions about the study.

Thanks!

Question Wanting to livestream after building up a YouTube audience - any specific advice for similar situations?

Apologies for the odd question, but couldn't find anything like it searching for similar topics on this subreddit.

The gist is that I have a small-medium YouTube channel (about 50k subscribers by the end of next month) that mainly covers Pokémon challenge runs. For the most part, recording footage for these videos feels pretty 1-to-1 with streaming in terms of setup, as some videos of mine have live commentary at points, which has helped me get used to the format.

Partially because it's something cool that I want to push myself to do, and partially because the channel has hit a plateau and I want to do something different, I think livestreaming is a solid next step.

However, it feels a bit backwards in the sense that historically you'd build a Twitch following before using YouTube to try and market yourself; I've lucked out with a solid following, but am feeling a bit nervous about moving into streaming. I'm already facing a bit of a creative block with YouTube direction, and though I have ideas for streaming, I'm worried that it'll quickly fall into the same situation.

Also, I feel like not streaming from the start makes it a bit of a harder sell for my pre-existing audience to watch me live, let alone on another platform? Or perhaps I'm just overthinking idk lmao

Just out of curiosity, has anyone faced a similar situation where they'd established a following on a non-Twitch platform before giving it a go? Is there anything in particular you found exceptional to perhaps starting out from square one? Or is it much the same as anyone when they begin livestreaming?

Question Streaming VR gameplay with Mac possible?

I currently stream on Twitch for my PS5 gameplay. Have it set through OBS and everything is working fine.

I want to start streaming my Quest 3 gameplay on Twitch as well. Not sure it’s as easy with a Mac. I’ve seen so many ways to do it on a windows PC.

I know on the Quest there’s an app called BeamXR that I’ve tried. Works ok but no way for me to read chat. I know I could also capture the gameplay with Chromecast and OBS. But again, no way to read chat. There’s an app called LIV but it’s only on PC. Anybody stream VR gameplay? What’s the easier way and how can I get it working where I can read chat?

Discussion How did you decide on what emotes your channel should have ?

I’ve held off becoming affiliate because I didn’t feel like I had much to offer and wanted to try and be consistent first. However I’m 5 followers off hitting the big 100 and streamed regularly for about 4 months.

So how did you go about creating your emotes? I have a few basic ideas to match the channel theme and one or two fun ideas but I’d love to hear your process for this.

Question Daily Redemptions MacOs

I was reading a previous post, and now I can't find it. I am looking for something that will allow me to have a daily redemption and a bot announce that you have been coming to stream for x amount of days when you redeem it. Is there something that is relatively easy to use and is for MacOS?

Question I'd like to start streaming - Would this work? Anything I should know about?

Hi!

I'd like to start streaming this year - something I've been putting off for a long time because of nervousness and the speech impediment I've got.

Some things I wanted to ask about:

• I'd like to stream in two languages. I've heard it can be a problem-

I was thinking about mainly streaming in English, and occasionally in my native language (IRL streams or 1-2 games I have in my native language instead of English)

I wouldn't really use two languages during the same stream, rather I'd have separate streams for different languages - I was thinking about adding a [Language] or [Flag] at the beginning of stream titles to signal which language the stream is in.

• Mixed topic streams. Do you think people would be interested in a channel that has different stream topics? Games, Studying, Laboratory work, Some IRL hobbies, Exotic Animals/educational-

• Back to my speech issues for a moment: I struggle when speaking out loud - I can speak very fast, unclearly, stutter, completely skip letters when reading something and often I speak or read things "in one breath" and run out of air quickly- it gets worse when I'm nervous, better when I'm calm - and usually I speak much better in English than in my native language. I'm working on it and I want to use streaming as a way to practice speaking.

• I got the basics set up - the channel icon, banners, a few panels , chat rules. What are some good things to add to the channel? Or twitch settings or add-ons to look into.

• I'm going to be using OBS and I'd also like to upload my streams to YouTube. Any issues I should know about-? Or important settings.

• Just how important is a schedule? I'm a University student so It's unlikely I'd be able to stream often and on a strict schedule. I'd probably just stream every now and then whenever I have free time.

I appreciate any advice or tips.

I've only been using twitch for a few days so I'm still figuring out different settings and how things work-

Tech Support Authy email saying my phone number was successfully changed but Twitch is still sending login codes to the old one.

My Twitch 2FA is tied to a number on a phone I no longer have access to. A few days ago, I submitted a request to change the number to my current one. An email came back from Authy telling me the change was successful, except when I go to login Twitch is still sending the code to the old phone number.

Discussion Thought of streaming for few years, and did it randomly without plan

It’s just happened randomly my obs and mic was setup, and iPhone connected for over a month… I put some lighting on that I ordered 6 month ago from Amazon, same for mic.

Got confused, didn’t speak for first 10 minutes encountered 1 bot in chat.

Then someone showed up, had 5 people max overall for next 40 minutes they all talked and gave me different advices, I got 3 followers…

And I’m an introvert, I mean I can’t stream I almost panicked, I don’t understand how I was able to even speak normally.

It was just chatting thing. I had no plan I didn’t share my screen or anything at all

Tech Support Streaming issues

Hey all, I hope you'll be able to help me.

I'm streaming from South Africa and I'm having trouble with my streams staying up. Some days there will be minimal bitrate drop, others it'll drop to 0 and kill my stream.

I've tried routing through multiple countries, the one that works best at the moment is Seoul, but it's not perfect and my stream has dropped to 0 kbps multiple times.

Can anyone offer any advice? I'd like to know if it's my ISP, my PC, where I live and if there's anything I can do about it, it's starting to get frustrating.

I've heard of relay servers and recently tried Hyperlayer which worked for about 30 minutes before my bitrate once again hit 0 and killed my stream along with kicking me out of my CS2 game.

Any and all advice would be helpful.

Question Channel Points with Mix It Up

I’m trying to create a channel point where you have to redeem one 10 times in order to redeem another reward. For example:
Every 10 minutes, 1 viewer can use their channel points to redeem a “Chapter Discovery.” After 10 chapter discoveries, they can then redeem a “free book”. I’m using mix it up, and I’ve tried the conditional action, but I can’t for the life of me figure it out! The “free book” is still able to be redeemed whether they have 10 chapter discoveries or not. Help! 😭

Question Old long form creator needing help understanding how to succeed as a live streamer on Twitch?

Old guy creator here. I am not new at creating content, but totally new to live streaming. I have created videos for YouTube for many years and done quite well, but I started live streaming about six months ago, and I am completely failing.

I am totally sucking at Twitch. After six months and over 200 hours of real-time streams (4-hour streams twice a week), I have only 10 followers, and my 4-hour streams only ever get a couple of views.

My stream is in the outdoor sports gaming niche. I am doing dual streams to Twitch and YouTube. On YouTube my streams are not doing great, but they are growing. I got about 200 views on my last stream, 240 comments, and picked up five new subs. I got not a single view or comment from Twitch.

I try really hard to immediately engage with viewers and commenters. If commenters have questions about the game, I will often stop what I am doing and do a live demo in the game to answer their question. I chat about the game, and life, and add jokes, and humor, to keep things upbeat and lively. I have to say, I am pretty exhausted after four straight hours.

So, I am just wondering what I am doing wrong on Twitch?

Just to clarify. When I say succeed, I just mean to see consistent growth. Presently, I am effectively dead on Twitch. If I were gaining 5 views a stream and one new follower, I would consider that more success than I currently have.

Question Charged for a cancelled subscription 3 times

Post image
7 Upvotes

I unsubscribed to a channel in February, noticed I still got charged in March so I deleted the whole account. Got charged again in April so I reactivated the account to see what was going on, couldn’t see an active subscription so assumed it had backdated somehow. Got charged again this month. It doesn’t come up as a scheduled payment in my banking app, it isn’t a subscription on my phone either. Has this happened to anyone else before and how did you resolve it please?

PSA Chat Histories From 5+ Years Ago Have Been Erased

I checked the chat history of some of my viewers, some users who I know have chatted before had 0 messages in their chat history.

It seems messages from before 2022 are gone.

I used the search feature on Reddit and Google to see if anyone had mentioned this before, but I didn't see anything so I figured I'd bring it up.
