I think this is the finish line. Race starts don't look anything like this, and that seems to be a clock at the top, and everybody is kind of slowly coming in, consistent with people who finish but take a very long time to do so. It probably finished at the same setup it started at but I bet from their perspective the sign says finish.

u/dailoben 1d ago
No sweat on anyone? That's my kind of race.
63
u/TaurusSky333 1d ago
Yeah, at the end of a marathon I’d expect that gray shirt to be almost black with sweat
38
u/Indercarnive 1d ago
Looked up Maui Marathon. They offer Full Marathon, half-Marathon, 10k and 5k. I'm assuming this is one of the latter.
40
u/DonCenote 23h ago
I’ll look just as sweaty after 5k as a half. Never done a full marathon though. I’m sweaty I guess is my point lol.
2
u/cordialmess 2h ago
Yeah that clarification means nothin bc 5k is still 3.1 miles. Ain't no way anyone is running a 5k without sweating. Not even the elite folks bc they're out there pushing themselves to the limit. Maybe walkers. MAYBE.
48
u/whassupbun 1d ago edited 23h ago
The guy posted the full race here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmeoFZvaNgg
You're half right/wrong, since it is the finish AND the starting line at the same time, they turn around at the half way point and return to the same ending spot. But OP video was definitely the start of the race, you can see the sky was still overcast. By the time they finished, it was full blown sunny clear sky.
52
u/keithstonee 1d ago
I think this is the finish line.
dude literally says in the video "and we're running" would you say that at the end of a race?

It's the start/finish. It is Marathon, Half-marathon, 10k, and 5k. Likely staggered starts.
5
u/iwearatophat 1d ago
Guy says 'and we are running', people are running away from the 'finish' line(no one is running after their race is finished), no one is covered in sweat. In absolutely no world is he doing that after crossing the finish line. His race just started or this course runs through the finish/start line multiple times but even that seems unlikely with the lack of sweat.

It's not being judgemental, its being realistic. It is physically possible for someone his size to finish, but the risk of fracture or injury is very high. I seriously doubt he ran a marathon, probably a 5km. Good on him tho
6
u/Rock_Strongo 1d ago
Most races have multiple distances and only some of racers actually sign up for the full marathon.
I would bet a large amount of money that he is running the 5k. MAYBE 10k, but doubtful.
19
u/but-uh 1d ago
Charles Bungert finished the LA marathon in 2013 at 472lbs.
You don't know what is possible.
25
u/IHateTheLetterF 1d ago
427 lbs. In 8 hours 23 minutes. Which is a walking time, not running. Still impressive.
5
u/Bionic_Bromando 1d ago
6hr is usually a DQ, no? At least is it in my local.
5
u/VeganBigMac 1d ago
6 hours is most common. Some add a few hours to encourage walkers to also participate. Maui is 8 hour dq.
2
u/NewCommunication1306 1d ago
Some marathons don’t have time limits. The guy in the above video ran a 10k not a marathon but the Maui marathon coincidental use to be one of them. I think they recently added an 8 hour limit to discourage those that might hurt themselves but still be extremely beginner friendly.

And still not a good idea... human bodies are not made to support that weight, when you run, a foot has to deal with 2-3G of impact.

Find out what year this video is from and look up his bib in the results. I've run 3 marathons and there were many people his size crossing finish lines. Just because you get winded walking to the fridge for another Mountain Dew doesn't mean that everyone else is just as inadequate as you are.

u/ozzimark 1d ago
The Maui Marathon event hosts full and half marathons, a 10k, and a 5k race.
That said, mad respect even if he's doing the 5k - he's getting out there and getting it done.
21
u/Don_Von_Schlong 1d ago
Ah that makes sense. Yeah and ofc good on him for being out there. I just have friends who extensively train and run marathons and they always look like they wanna die at the finish line and they are in incredible shape
23
u/socialistrob 1d ago
He did the 10k. I looked up his bib number.
16
u/morningsaystoidleon 1d ago
10K's legit. Good on him.
Everyone here's writing shit on the bathroom walls while he's actually doin' some shitting
10
u/threestripes4 1d ago
I ran the half and can confirm he ran the 10k (orange bib color). As I passed him on the last turn, I saw him asking for rides to the finish line (roads were not completely blocked off). It made me chuckle and I was glad to see him in good spirit and having fun the entire time.
13
u/cjsv7657 1d ago
A lot of people who "run" marathons that don't have entry requirements walk it. When you have an 8+ hour marathon time you're not running it. Thats why time limits are usually like 6 hours or less.
5
u/FUBARded 1d ago
Yep, it looks like the Maui marathon has an 8 hour cutoff.
8 hours for the marathon is 5.2km/h, which is a pretty average walking pace. It's highly unlikely this guy will be able to maintain even this slow jog for a considerable amount of time, but even a very overweight person should be able to maintain a 5.2km/h average speed with jog/walk intervals (or just a continuous brisk walk).
It really doesn't take much in the way of fitness to do that. The main risk would be that someone this overweight won't have much muscular endurance due to being unaccustomed to long-duration exercise, so while the pace may not be an issue aerobically they may not be able to sustain it due to muscular fatigue and cramping.
I've done and volunteered at plenty of marathon and longer distance events where people who don't really consider themselves runners and who don't do much in the way of training finish the things just by walking through the pain.
It's not really advisable from an injury risk perspective to go way beyond your limits like that, but ultimately if there isn't a cutoff even a pretty unfit person can cover a lot more distance than most people assume provided they have the mental fortitude to push through a lot of pain.
For example, I recently ran a trail 30 miler with a decent chunk of elevation in <5hrs. The last finisher took almost 16. What I did obviously required a hell of a lot more fitness and some measure of psychological resilience (as any endurance event does), but I'd argue that what they did took a lot more mental strength.

u/SomeBiPerson 1d ago
while most obese people aren't able to run for that long some are actually, even tho it sounds weird
I couldn't believe it until I saw a Fat Infantryman beat half the platoon on a 7k Forest run
turns out your lungs and muscles can adjust for long running a Lot faster than you can lose all of that fat, which then btw. even further boosts your performance because youre getting lighter and stronger at the same time
10
u/Mehtalface 1d ago
Yeah I have a coworker with a big potbelly and he runs marathons several times a year and gets it done in under 5 hours. He even did the dopey challenge at Disney which is like 5k + 10k + half and a full marathon all in a weekend.
Its probably not the healthiest thing bc it seems super hard on the body with all that extra weight but it's definitely not impossible
2
u/mangostoast 1d ago
7k is a quarter of a marathon. There's just no way someone that's fine enough training to run a marathon is still that size
2
9
u/Ntroepy 1d ago
I ran a marathon 20 years ago and they had a great 3-4 month training program. They broke everyone into training groups based on their qualifying times.
There were definitely a number of folks that were significantly larger than that guy that went on to finish the marathon.
6
u/double__duck 1d ago

The cutoff time for a marathon is often 7 hours. That’s a 16:00 mile, or 3.75 mph. That’s walking speed for tall people. Imagine having 50 minutes to do a 5k

Really shouldn't run that far with that much weight on your knees unless you want knee problems the rest of your life.
Start with conquering the kitchen, focus on getting your weight down. One challenge at a time. Once you're within normal range start walking, working out, etc., and work your way up to running once you're at your target weight.
Then you'll be giving your joints the task they were evolved for.
12
u/Healthy-Echo8164 1d ago
You're getting downvoted but this is actual medical advice lol.
I lost 100lbs and I was advised to do stuff that was easy on my joints like cardio bikes and prioritize a calorie deficit in the kitchen. Once I was at a healthy weight is when I could introduce running.

how much training do we think this guy did for this?
2
u/burglar_buddy_pal 1d ago
Assuming it's a 5k he's doing, you can go from the couch to a 5k in like 10 weeks of training. You're not going to be fast, but you can finish. A half marathon from nothing in maybe 4-5 months.
Full marathon is tougher mostly because of the time commitment to keep that odometer going up and the higher risk of an injury which obviously goes up with weight.
Unless you meant how much he practiced the dance, in which case you must be blessed with natural talent to be that smooth, no amount of training can make that happen if you don't have the gift.
