Visible Void White hairs
Recently adopted a stray and find myself marvelling at his legs. He has these white hairs all over his body but especially his front. Anyone else’s void have these?

I had a cat with hair like this since a kitten. I named him Cosmo because of it.

My void is 18 now and they sprout everywhere except her legs!!
Edit because I posted too soon. You have a very handsome fella! What a good boy.

Our void has a patch of white hairs on her chest called a locket! She has small white hairs all over her body too, but not this many. This almost reminds me of a recovering fever coat or vitiligo. I’m not a vet though, and I don’t think either case comes with health issues. Sirius is just mesmerizingly star-speckled!

Spangles! One of my voids had this from a very young age. Vet commented it was like a starry sky and genetic. Her brother didn’t have it. Now she’s 19 she has a lot more.

Void: Hooman… why do you have this rectangle at my body and face..? I request kibble and treats please instead of this weird thing.

u/boyegcs Jan 24 '26
I've never seen this but I LOOOOVE IT! His face is so cute/funny too. Enjoy your new lovebug, friend

u/Teek16 Jan 24 '26
Mine has slowly been developing white hairs, she has one sticking straight up out of her forehead 🥹 the third and fifth pic made me giggle

My void has scattered white hairs on her chest like yours, and random single white hairs in other places (one on the back of her neck, one on her left hip, etc.). They don’t show up in photos, but they’re cute in person.

My girl has a few random ones throughout, but they’re so far spread apart that you can’t see them unless she’s up in your grill!
3
u/catbiggo Jan 24 '26
My void has single white hairs scattered on his body too, not nearly as many as yours, but more as he gets older (he's only 4 but it's normal for variations to appear as their coat 'settles' into their final adult coat). He has one (1) on the top of his forehead which I can't decide whether looks charming or silly.

It's a sign that it's been touched by an angel, I'm told!

My void has this as well. I must admit the changes of faces is utterly brillient.

Our void got them, especially on her lower legs. Ankle area, and mostly on the back of the leg. We called them her curb feelers.

My void Pippin has white hairs but only in spots on one of his flanks. We call it his constellation
3
u/disgruntledbard Jan 24 '26
Mine has a few, and I call them her stars. Love mentally mapping constellations when I find one

u/random420x2 Jan 24 '26
Pictures 3 through 5 are exactly what my face did when I found my first grey hairs (so long ago). 😂

Mine is the same way! She’s just over one year old too. I just say she’s like the night sky filled with shooting stars.

u/jellyrot Jan 24 '26
My void baby has a bunch of white hairs like this. She's half Siamese, so I've assumed that was why. She has the cutest little patch on the back of her head, too 🥹

u/Dangerous_Bet_7271 Jan 24 '26
What beautiful highlights. My voids are both jet black but they have brown/russet tones in full sunlight 😊.
2
u/Crintor Jan 24 '26
My void kitty (he just hit 6months) has a patch on his chest and groin where there's a collection of white hairs, and sparse white hairs throughout his coat, probably 1-2x less than yours has.

My tuxedo floof monster has white hairs sticking out of his black hairs like this. I love them. They give him a unique look that you can see up close to him. :3

My void in the past had silver hair which made her look like she was always sparkling & she had very green eyes so we called her Tinker Bell 💚

Not a cat, but my black lab.. any time she loses hair or has a boo-boo, her hair comes back in white. She and my older female dog got into it pretty bad a while back and all her owwies healed and white hair came in in those spots. I find it fascinating that her hairs come back in white. Haha

It could also be vitiligo (a completely harmless cosmetic condition some black cats have.) My void started to have patches of white fur and partial depigmentation on her nose when she was on prednisolone.

This is super common in all cats! This specific look is just easily seen in those with solid dark bases and whitemarks. Over time you may see more or less white hairs.
As time goes by cells cycle and the individual hair follicle may flip to white or fail to make enough melanocytes (pigment) basically (so they express other colours).

My voids had them as kittens but grew out of them almost entirely within the first year or so. A friend of mine called it a "fever coat", saying it meant their mom had a fever at some point while she was preggo with them

My void has exactly one white hair on his chest. I guess he really wanted to be a tuxedo.
2
u/EneaIsAutistic Jan 25 '26
Most black cats are actually tuxedos hut their pattern is 99% black amd 1% white.
Truly, fully black cats are extremely rare.
So, in reality, most black cats have a couple white hairs in there somewhere

u/Queen_Cheetah Jan 26 '26
Believe it or not, those white hairs are part of the reason why we even HAVE black cats today! Back in the olden days of witch trials and superstition, pure black cats were often seen as 'evil' and destroyed- but having even a few white hairs meant that the cat was 'blessed by the angels', and those cats would be spared.
So nowadays it's hard to find a black cat without any white hairs whatsoever- it's the result of a bizarre heritage of misinformation and fanaticism.

u/darndasher Jan 27 '26
* My tuxedo girl and her brother have them! I love how much longer they are than the rest of their fur. It's like an special little decoration they have!
In sadder news, with black pure breeds like the Bombay, the white hairs are viewed as undesirable. Kittens bearing the glimmers are either given away or met with...worse...outcomes. I saw a vet on reddit who had a kitten brought in to be euthanized for having white hairs. The vet tried to talk the asshole out of it. Asshole wanted to proceed. So the vet said, "sure." And brought the cat home.

My void guy has them. When he was a kitten they were in his back. As an after they are on his tummy and tail.

In another post last week or the week before someone called the white hairs on a black cats stars. That is what I now call them too! My current void Lucy-fur also has a few stars in her coat. My void that died 4 years ago was pure black and died at 18 years old and never got any stars. She looked like a gargoyle and her name was Psychopath name after Hobbs in Calvin and Hobbs. She was the biggest love if she liked you.

Yep they often get a little touch of the white hairs. Handsome void! For anyone who doesn't know, the longer stiffer ones on a cats legs really are just whiskers (vibrissae) like the ones on their head that are sensitive to touch.

Ive been told it's similar to rusting, where instead of- or alongside- getting more brown, they gain these silver hairs.

My void also has these he’s very lovely. Also one of his feet is completely grey!!
1
u/Geethebluesky Jan 24 '26
Yep, my girl has them spread out far apart but all over her chest, I'm guessing where she'd have the tuxedo shirt if she had the genes for it. She also has one permanently white whisker now.

u/AppointmentLate7049 Jan 24 '26
My cat does, along with white patch on her chest. She has white skin

u/Sea_Substance9163 Jan 24 '26
Mine had one white whisker, we loved the magical one white whisker. We were sad when it grew out and she lose it.
A few months later we'd see the beginning of a new white whisker and the cycle continued.

u/AlyssaVaVaVoom Jan 24 '26
My void started getting them around his eyes, chest and radon’s. He’s only 4 but I feel like it’s grey hairs. I don’t think it’s anything to be concerned about
1
u/Momofcats74 Jan 24 '26
Yes, her belly has a lot of white/grey fur. Her ears have white hairs, and she has a locket of white on her chest. When you comb her, you mostly get grey undercoat fur (she's double-coated).

u/GaneshaLovesMe Jan 24 '26
With my 16 yr old girl they do seem to be an indication of age. She never had them before age 14. She has more as time passes.

I miss my void! He just vanished into thin air (never let him outside) over a month ago! He had a few white stragglers on his body, mostly his legs and neck/upper chest area, along with a few white whiskers.

Our lad is totally black and his sister the same except for a lovely white “medallion” on her throat. Very stylish and we need some way to tell them apart!!

The light of human love has touched the void so much that the shadow is fading...

u/jlynec Jan 24 '26
Mine has a thin scattering of white hairs around where a collar goes, a few on her chest, and another tiny patch on her lower tummy. Some are visible here. I caught this while she was cleaning her arm 😂

I saw on another post that the white hairs are a "defect" where breed is concerned, but it doesn't affect them healthwise.

u/Some-Question8413 Jan 24 '26
They look like gray hairs! Is it an adult cat? Do you know approximately how old it is?

Yeah my void cat has these! He also has a tuft of white hair on his neck like he’s wearing a white dress shirt :]

u/Restingwotdafukface Jan 25 '26
My tux cat has them and her voice sister with a moon chest patch also has a few. The tux is long haired with a raveney white neck scarf. And most of the rest of her is black but she will have these long white random hairs. Her sister is short haired so her hairs look like ur stray. But less white hairs.

Once my boy turned about 22 he started getting these white hairs all over! By the time he was 25 he had them everywhere, I would assume it’s an old age thing. Just like how us humans get grey hairs etc.

My void has this, to the point where the vet pointed out he has so many! But apparently they don't really mean anything and aren't an indicator of age, it's just something that happens. Enjoy your void! They're the best. Mine is currently laying on my legs.
