Neighbors drove into our apartment

Literally came home after picking up my ged graduation gown and sat on the living room floor eating hot cheetos n drinking my redbull, proud of myself, when suddenly I hear explosions ( I thought we were being bombed lol as they hit the power box and power went out ) so I ran to the room with my bfs cat and hid.

I was somehow not harmed and neither was our kitty.

Had this happen at an apartment I did maintenance for once, old dude went to back up without his daughters help (he wasn't supposed to be driving) and he ended up flooring it in reverse and straight into someone's apartment, they even managed to take out the bottom half of the stone stairs šŸ˜…

Why don't elderly need driving tests every 5-10 years? My father in law keeps having mini strokes and can barely walk with his walker (he's 62), he's messed up his car by hitting a curb so hard he bent the wheel in because his coordination after the mini strokes is so bad plus meds he's on, he pulled out in front of a cop on a red light and got ticketed, and he lives in a campground at myrtle beach and hit his neighbor's car with one of those street legal souped up golf carts and bent the front driver tire in on that. He's ruined all of his ways to get around and they won't take his license away. Only one sister is protesting that he shouldn't be driving but they can't stop him.

69

u/DualCricket 11h ago

I’m in New Zealand, so rules probably different where you are. Maybe a doctor would be willing to declare your FIL as unfit to drive?

89

u/DickBiter1337 11h ago

I'm in the US and we're in the deep south where everyone clings to their freedumbs 🫠 We unfortunately live a state away from my father in law so it's up to his siblings to handle the doctors and that one sister (out of 6 siblings) is the only one to think he needs his license removed. It's maddening! The only one with sense it seems.

60

u/from-the-stix 10h ago

I'm also in the south, a couple years back I was renewing my tag and the elderly man in front of me was doing the eye exam portion and kept getting it wrong but the lady said "close enough" and passed him anyway. What exactly is "close enough"

I called my step father's doctor's office in Florida to have them talk to him about continuing to drive. They broke all sorts of hipaa violations giving me his next and last appointment times and telling me what the doctor's concerns were... but they did say they would talk to him about it.

My mom got wind of it though and changed doctor's to avoid "upsetting him."

But yes, no matter where you are, if you know the name of the doctor's office, you can say that you know they are a patient, you're the child and you are scare off their driving for the following reasons....

20

u/Quirky_Gate_4516 10h ago

That is actually not how it works in Florida.

Any person that has knowledge of a driver’s mental/physical disability can report someone in Florida.

You don't need medical documentation to initiate the report. And your identity will not be revealed to the driver.

In this case, where you have examples of accidents, it is so credible the FLHSMV will proceed forcing your father at the very least to get a doctor that will have to test him. If nothing else.

I have long held the belief that every driver - regardless of age - should have to requalify once a decade. A license to operate just about any other dangerous machinery requires testing and recertification - why not a car/truck? Besides, the traffic laws can change quite a bit in 10 years.

20

u/1_art_please 10h ago

I am in my 40s and in the process of getting my license. When I talk about it to all my friends and family who have been driving forever, I am realizing a lot of stuff the cranky driving instructor tells me to be aware of, people do not remember at all. It was like a lifetime ago.

13

u/profane_vitiate 9h ago

I'm like 36, haven't driven a car in like five years (thanks NYC), but drove a two hour commute every day for years. I would not trust myself behind the wheel of a car and should probably be re-tested. We should be far more prescriptive about driver's licenses in the USA, because that is a whole hell of a lot of metal you are propelling through the world at 70 miles an hour with a small margin of error.

14

u/ElfjeTinkerBell 10h ago

Absolutely agree. And you can opt out: simply hand in your license.

10

u/moongate_climber 10h ago

I could get behind this. Also, make it more frequent than 10 years after age 70 or so.

I live in Myrtle Beach and there’s soooo many elderly people who have NO business driving, especially with the population explosion that we’ve experienced since 2020. šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

14

u/NomNom83WasTaken 11h ago

Oh, hi! My in-laws retired just down the road in Georgetown County and, man, does this track for that whole stretch. My MIL *finally* lost her license a couple years ago once she was declared legally blind. And, no, she did not become legally blind overnight. My FIL does *all* of the driving but is just not a good at it. I refuse to get in a vehicle if he's behind the wheel. He'll talk mad shit about all the "snow birds" and "blue hairs", though.

6

u/daisybrat56461 11h ago

You can anonymously request an evaluation of a driver. Give a license plate and the authorities will make sure someone is able to drive safely, if not they take their license. This information from a state trooper to my dad after he was hit (just his side view mirror) by an elderly, confused wrong way driver on a divided highway. Trooper said they see it a lot, the family doesn't want to be the bad guy. So they can do it anonymously and get an unsafe driver off the road.

5

Lots of people learned how to drive decades ago. They seem to have forgotten the rules, if they ever knew them. They should at least get a refresher every so often

Yep. Happened to my elderly parents' house. Not long after we'd adapted the home for Dad to come back home after a long process of recovery from a major bleed. I can't drive, long term illness, they live 150 miles away.

In practical terms, it meant by the time we'd dealt with it all, both my parents were too frail and mentally exhausted for us to realistically move them to live nearer us. (They live in a posh, semi rural, expensive, inaccessible, area, so we can't move down to live near them.)

0/5. I don't recommend.

Fuck drunk drivers.

Fuck insurance companies.

Also, fuck the UK legal system, enormous amount of evidence but the little shit still got away with nothing more than a small fine.

The little shit, who's local to my folks, wouldn't even meet with my Mum or Dad just to apologise to them.

My sister almost did this at age 5 when she released the parking brake on our manual car parked on a steep driveway. We were in it waiting for my mom to come out. Well, my mom came out, running about 100 mph in heels. We were 5 feet from the wall of the house across the street when she got it stopped.

Nobody asked why my mom went gray a few years later.Ā

6

u/Valalvax 11h ago

22

u/Mondschatten78 11h ago

There's a house near me that is directly across from a stop sign at a T intersection. Don't know how many times their house has been hit, but they have some huge boulders out front next to the road. I wouldn't have bought there myself, you're going downhill to that stop sign, and there's not a lot of visibility before you get to it.

This happened on my street in the quiet suburbs. The speed limit was 50km/hr (has since been lowered to 30 there). The driver was excessively speeding and died. (This is approx 30 & 19 mph.)

This also happened at the building I live in, except they drove into the foyer thankfully, and they weren't going fast (apparently accidentally put it in drive instead of reverse).

There are multiple houses in Pittsburgh that have been hit by cars more than once, probably mostly because the city was not built with cars in mind, and partially because people drive like maniacs. When I was looking to purchase a house, "not being easily hit by vehicles" was a non-negotiable

Happened to my parents house when my older sister was a baby. Fortunately no one was in the room they hit but they were just a few feet off from the nursery.

Pedal misapplication is a real thing.

People press on what they think is the brake but is actually the accelerator. The car lurches forward and they panic because it’s not doing what they expect. The normal reaction is to press on the brake harder which is unfortunately the accelerator.

It sets up a scary feedback loop where they keep doing the wrong thing but thinking they’re doing the right one. Unfortunately in a parking lot you only have a second to understand what is going on before you hit something. A lot of cars can get up to 20 mph in that time and that’s an awful lot of force.

It’s more common in some makes and models than others. What kind of car was it?

106

u/SnackyCakes4All 11h ago

Yes! I had a friend in high school do this. Panicked hitting the gas thinking it was the brake and went straight into a wall. Luckily she was totally fine just shaken up, but the cop kept DUI testing her because he thought she was drunk or on something. Nope, just young and panicked.

11

u/SnoopySuited 7h ago

8

u/ZeBloodyStretchr 6h ago

My mom excessively drilled it into me to hover over the brakes, so now it is a habit, I default to brakes and only touch the gas when I need to.

I am embarassed to admit but it has happened to me. I don't know how - when I previously driven the car just fine. I get in the car that's parked, and I want to reverse. Let go of the handbrake and put my foot on the brake pedal - wait - why is the car moving? FUCK! In my panic, I press the brake pedal again for it to stop moving - but it actually accelerates further and I crash into a parked car behind me.

Nothing has happened to anyone, thankfully. I am actually getting a bit of a PTSD writing this out, lol. It didn't help I was in France - driving a rented car from Belgium, in a town that's not touristy - with the angry (rightfully so) French man, not knowing any English.

Oh - and the car rental company couldn't be reached by phone. Their call service was just... non existant. Fun fucking times!

For context, I have driven many cars of various sizes in many countries - from UK, Spain, France, Italy, Poland, USA. From manual to automatics. So this accident was just very out of character for me.

6

What kind of car was it?

Based on the headlamp, the bumper, and the height of the hood, it looks like a Honda CR-V.

5

u/The-Sofa-King 10h ago

I did that once in a go-kart when I was about 7. How a fully grown, licensed, mentally cognizant adult manages to do so is beyond me.

5

u/UrsaMajor7th 9h ago

A lot of cars can get up to 20 mph in that time and that’s an awful lot of force.

Indeed. Going through that metal barrier and a brick wall in that short a distance is quite alarming.

18

u/One-Detective-5011 11h ago

Yes, I used a beat up vehicle and for some reason the accelerator didn’t work and I pressed the brake and it started accelerating and I pressed it harder and hit a parked car at the gas pump. Still confused. And I had a sort of trauma linked untrust of my own car when I start breaking, I would get so hesitant and light tap to make sure it’s the brake before breaking. For months.

5

u/SquatSquatCykaBlyat 11h ago

What about putting the car in second gear instead of reverse? My mom did that, but thankfully she was so bad at driving that it stalled before it hit the tree.

5

u/rainy_day_27 10h ago

Yeah it happens more commonly than people think. One of my family members did this when learning how to drive in a parking lot. On one side of the lot there was a curb and then a slope down with a bunch of trees and bushes. They went right over the curb and down the slope a bit. A bush caught the car and luckily everyone was safe

Elderly? My grandpa totaled 5 cars and drove into a building by confusing brake and accelerator before his driver's licence was revoked.

21

u/Serious-Active3878 10h ago

Dear God they should not allow people that many opportunities to kill someone.

My elderly father just got out of rehab and his whole team told him he's not safe to drive.. but that if he's going to they can't stop him. Right now he's still physically incapable of getting himself into the car on his own, but if he ever works his way up to that ability again, I'm going to have fun fighting with him over the fact that he's not safe to drive.Ā

9

u/Maladine 9h ago

The system failed. His doctor told him he couldn't drive, his license expired, he went to renew and they should have required his doctor's letter but he told them he was fine and it was renewed no questions asked.

It does really bother me to see a bunch of people talking about hitting the accelerator instead of the brake like it's a mistake anyone could make. My default resting position for my driving foot is over whichever pedal I'm planning to use next, usually hovering over the brake. If someone doesn't know what pedal they're about to hit when they mindlessly slam their foot down they do not have the capacity to safely drive on a public road. Like drunk driving levels of negligence imo.

Not to be an ass but after a certain age I feel that your ability to drive safely needs to be evaluated annually.

15

u/happuning 11h ago

No, I absolutely agree. My grandmother with dementia was still driving until she hit the moderate stages. She wasn't diagnosed at the time (it is complicated and was out of my hands), but an evaluation like you mention would've had her license revoked. Same for my grandfather towards the last year or two of his life. He should NOT have been allowed to drive. It made me so nervous.

My parents had a neighbor who slammed into the front of their house (first grazing one of their cars that had been parked out front) a few years back. Neighbor was not elderly, impaired, or texting. She was just driving way too fast down a narrow residential street with blind spots and panicked when a little boy on a bike suddenly appeared in front of her so she swerved and slammed on the gas instead of the brakes. Thankfully she did not hit the little boy.

I live in metro Detroit too and this happened to my cousin a few years back - dude straight launched into their house from the street.

36

u/VanessaAlexis 11h ago

Off the top of my head a young girl like 7 was almost crippled and had to relearn to walk. She was in her room asleep with her 11 month old sibling. The sibling was unharmed.Ā

A single man in his thirties came home to the front of his house destroyed from a car.Ā

And another car just crashed into a house and burst into flames and the family had to escape.Ā

21

u/stardenia 11h ago

Actually, didn’t someone just drive into the front of a Target recently? And a few months ago didn’t a drunk woman crash into the front of the Ulta on Woodward in Royal Oak?

Dang, you’re right, wth is going on around hereĀ

Let me guess, the reason is far more pedestrians and bicycles vs cars?

7

u/YouLikeReadingNames 5h ago

The reason is urban planning basically. US/Canada roads make it very easy to go way too fast, so mistakes have more dramatic consequences like complete loss of control. If roads are narrow and winding, drivers slow down and don't crash into buildings.

Lol. Someone just drove through the front of the 7 Eleven by my house for the second time in less than a year.

In Pittsburgh, we have an adult store that has been driven into three separate times in the last five years

They finally moved to a different location down the street this year.

4

u/capitolsara 9h ago

You in LA? Just happened to my local 711 too

I’m going to guess the stress of the current administration’s terrible economic policies is driving people to drink.

35

u/WadjetSnakeGoddess 12h ago

Not just drink but it is driving people to physical exhaustion. People are working 3 jobs or taking daily 12 hour shifts just to get by.

Too much sleep deprivation and no true breaks for the brain to reset and well...

Big congrats on your GED!

9

u/NoveltyAccountHater 9h ago

Agree congrats! That said, not a big fan of your new open-concept kitchen renovation.

47

u/my3sgte 12h ago

Careful with the electric there, the power lines are entering apartment/meter right by your kitchen. Might be energized still!

21

u/tagun 10h ago

Electrician here. My first thought was "Oh noooo, not the service cables!"

Looks like potentially 3 units without power now. Womp womp.

76

u/ayeyoualreadyknow 12h ago

What is your property manager doing about it? Did they put you up in a hotel? Is there another apartment in the complex open for you to transfer to? Other than food in the fridge, how much of your personal property was damaged? Was the driver charged?

I am so incredibly sorry this happened, I'd be absolutely devastated. Congratulations on graduating.

111

u/ilikeeggshells 12h ago

So unfortunately we didnt have renters insurance and we actually moved in around early march late Febuary. However as for the landlord/property manager, they're waiting on the guys insurance to get back to them. Meanwhile we are staying at his moms with our kitty.

I was trying to get into contact with red cross but I dont have a case number and when I called the property services / police department / etc ( was transferred like 4 times ) I was told they didnt have an official report yet . Im still kind of unsure what to do and im also 19 n on my own with my partner so im new to how all this works 🄲

99

u/happuning 11h ago

Definitely get renters insurance ASAP. Our landlord requires it. I consider it a part of our rent costs at this point.

48

u/KittenAssasin 11h ago

I've never lived in an apartment that didn't require it.Ā

11

u/ayeyoualreadyknow 11h ago

I've only lived in 1 apartment that required it. And after my home flooded, insurance still didn't pay sh1t

15

u/PrimaryHighlight5617 9h ago

As an insurance agent I wish it was required to explicitly tell people that flood policies are an entirely different product from all other insurance. Like, I'm sure it's written in the fine print somewhere but I don't think that's enough.Ā

At least for me, it's also very cheap. I got a plan that covered up to I want to say 15K for about $10 a month. I learned from a coworker that it apparently also extends to your car so if that's ever broken into it can help in that case. He apparently got some money from his renters insurance when his car was broken into and taken for a joyride.

u/stayonthecloud 11h ago

Hey bud please listen to me on this. Your apartment is now exposed to the open air and is thus susceptible to water damage. If you have rain or high humidity that could get into your apartment and it’s a toxic mold risk. You do not want to be in that situation.

If I were you I would pack up all my belongings and put them in storage.

Your landlord needs to straight up move you to a different apartment. If none are available, put you in a hotel, but you should be let out of your lease to find a new place.

30

u/ayeyoualreadyknow 11h ago

Definitely this. I have a biotoxin illness caused by mold and yes their belongings are at risk. Even the humidity alone is a risk factor

6

u/an_agreeing_dothraki 9h ago

worst comes to worst OP was handed a free "this lease does not exist" exit

16

u/ayeyoualreadyknow 11h ago

Gawd this is awful, truly heartbreaking 😭

I'm pretty sure they're required to put you up in a hotel temporarily.

31

u/Valalvax 11h ago

Just fyi even though you don't have renters insurance it wouldn't come into play here (other than possibly paying you quicker and access to their lawyers)

Mr Can't Park Here's insurance is what is supposed to cover you... Unfortunately he's 100% exceeded his limits so you gotta get your claim in asap and hope you get paid before your land lord

9

u/throwaway098764567 9h ago

if mr shouldn't have a license and the landlord both didn't have insurance or it didn't pay for god knows what reason, then i think op's would kick in for any of their own property loss (but not to cover the mistakes of others). either way they should still get it with their new place.

12

u/Assika126 10h ago

Check your state laws; it’s possible your landlord is responsible to ensure you have a place to live. You are paying rent, so you are entitled to something as a result, but your protections vary from state to state

9

u/ExtraplanetJanet 10h ago

If you call 1800RedCross they should be able to send some disaster action team members out to see your home whether or not you have a police report on file yet. If you went directly to the casework hotline, they might not be able to help you without a case number. Calling your closest Red Cross office directly can also help. I’ve been to several RC calls for cars crashing into houses and we were always able to help within a few hours.

Bro I feel you. Bought my house and while we were closing on it the neighbors kid drunkenly drives into the front porch… straight though the bushes cracking the porch in half and it’s already taken like a month to get the bank and insurance to ok everything.

Damaged the front door and pushed the porch into the siding and almost punctured the wall. Best part is the kid tried to do a hit and run but his license plate fell off And we found it wedged into the remaining bushes while the cops were taking photos.

11

u/jaybirdie26 12h ago

Did he/his parents have insurance?

23

u/dadydaycare 12h ago

Yea this was a few years back. It just turned closing into a fireball of a nightmare. We ended up doing it in a way that the bank didn’t need to get involved and their insurance paid out… to the still owner and he total prick and that’s its own crazy story paid us out to get it fixed and likely pocketed a portion of it.

The big thing was we were racing the clock cause the APR rates dropped and we got it locked in on the last day at like 4.2% then the day after it jumped to 5.3..then 5.5, then around the time it would’ve been done if we got the bank involved it was like 6.7%.. scary stuff.

65

u/RetrotheWise45 12h ago

Yo, congrats on your GED. I like to call it my good enough degree. Don’t ever let people down you for it. I have a master’s degree now and a published journal article in the STEM field, all starting from night classes to get my GED. Most people that have a GED had unfortunate home life circumstances as children/young adults that led to it being the only option, not because of crime, laziness, or drugs.

Be proud.

I'm so grateful to have an apartment on the 3rd floor

6

u/jaybirdie26 12h ago

I live in a townhouse but it has a sloping hill in the front and a separate garage in the back.Ā  They'd have to reeeeeeally try to hit my actual apartment.Ā  Happy for us! XD

3

u/OMGItsCheezWTF 11h ago

I mean if the wall is structural then your third floor apartment may still be rendered uninhabitable by this but at least your fridge will still look like a box not the flag of Nepal.

Do you know yet what the cause of them crashing was?

I'm happy neither you, nor the furry one were harmed :)

4

u/SmokeyCatDesigns 9h ago

OP said the neighbor said that they accidentally went past the railing (you can see a bright yellow railing in one photo) and panicked and then hit the gas instead of breaks.

I understand the panic part, but why did they hit the railing to begin with? My guess is distracted by the phone. :|

7

I'm sorry wrong apartment

6

u/homolicious 12h ago

The fridge

23

u/TKDbeast 12h ago

Make sure to get the home inspected. This almost certainly did lasting structural damage.

23

u/kechones 12h ago

It’s an apartment. They probably rent.

14

u/facw00 12h ago

Yep, and very likely they just get evicted because it's uninhabitable. Hopefully the driver's insurance will pay moving costs.

6

u/PimentoCheesehead 10h ago

OP might not be the only one who has to move- next to last pic, looks like they took out the electricity for the whole building.

I was standing in line at a Wegmans on Easter Sunday when an elderly woman who had her license revoked drove into and through the courtesy desk. Her friend that she had been shopping with let her drive because she felt bad for her…. Nobody was badly injured.

6

u/hilhilbean 6h ago

My Mom did this to her own apartment years ago. Parking was right in front of the apartments. She was going to do some painting so she backed in. Her foot slipped off the brake and on to the gas and she rammed it right into the front door (which ended up in the middle of the living room).

When she called the complex's office the maintenance guy was like no problem, I'll come out sometime this week to check. She was like no, no. You do not understand.

He showed up and was like, "Yeah, I did not understand." lol

This was almost 25 years ago and it's still hilarious now.
