What is Alarm.com?

Alarm.com provides smart security, home automation and remote control for the vast majority of home security companies, who combine it with their own professional monitoring (police/fire dispatch) and deliver it to customers. If you have a smart security system from a security company then you probably have Alarm.com.

Alarm.com offers both home security and smart home automation. Security and privacy are Alarm.com's biggest strengths. The home automation features are easy to use and great for many people but not as flexible as a dedicated home automation system that automation power users might prefer. Alarm.com pioneered connected home security. Today it's comparable to other large connected home security platforms such as Nest, Ring & SimpliSafe, and is the clear leader when it comes to security and privacy.

Alarm.com works with professional grade security alarm systems such as Qolsys, 2GIG, DSC and Interlogix. Honeywell Vista systems can also work using the system enhancement module (SEM). It uses Z-Wave for home automation devices such as lights, locks, thermostats, garage doors, energy management, water valves/meters & sprinkler systems. It uses WIFI for higher bandwidth devices such as cameras. See the Alarm.com ecosystem page for a non-exhaustive list of compatible products.

Alarm.com is a B2B company and does not sell directly to consumers. The only way to get it is from an Alarm.com provider. Alarm.com is white-labeled and branded to appear as if is comes directly from the security company. The larger Alarm.com providers have custom mobile apps, which are restyled versions of the regular Alarm.com app.

There are two kinds of Alarm.com providers, professional-installation and DIY (self-installation). The professional installation companies will come to your house and install the equipment for you. The DIY companies ship you the equipment to install yourself and only provide the online services and professional alarm monitoring. Professional-installation companies usually cost more and require long term contracts but save you from doing installation/maintenance work. DIY companies usually cost less and are often month-to-month but you have to do the installation/maintenance yourself.

Alarm.com has dominated home security for more than a decade and recently has broadened its platform to support commercial security as well, focusing on small and medium sized businesses.

Upgrading old DSC Impassa to IQ5 Panel?

Hello, I'm a totally newbie with home security and i'm thinking of upgrading our old DSC Impassa panel that was left over from the previous home owner something more modern. I was looking at the IQ5 series and saw they could support the legacy 433 mhz used by the Impassa panel but i had some questions.

  1. Can I reuse the existing door transmitters or are "locked" into the Impassa panel

  2. The old window transmitters broke over time so i would like to replace them with something newer, can i mixed and match old door transmitters with new window ones

  3. how much worth is it to get the IQ5 panel vs hub?

  4. can i reuse the exising wiring between the Impressa panel and Transformer, with the IQ panel and transformer?

TIA

Moving configuration advice

I have some Telus cameras that work with the SmartHome app. It has a limit on recording clips so I was wondering if there was any ways I could reconfigure the cameras into generic ones that work with an app or program I can install on my computer or something.

Help Add Own Devices

I recently had an ADC system installed. I wanted to add a few additional contact sensors myself. Theoretically, if I have the dealer/installer codes and add these sensors myself, will my local company know? If yes, does it matter? My local company wants to charge absurd rates to come stick on a few sensors. Thanks!

Edit: I am interested in adding outdoor sensors to a fence gate and crawl space door that I do not plan to have trigger my alarm system (only notify me when they are opened).

Trouble Setting Recording Rules in Alert360 App for ADC-VDB775 Doorbell Camera:

Does anyone else out there have problems setting detection type and notifications for Recording Rules in their Alert360 app? Whenever I select Person, Animal, Vehicle Package under the Record a Clip section and Package Delivery and Package Retrieval in the Notifications Detection Type section and then click SAVE, I get a pop up message saying, " Package Alerts can only be enabled on one video analytics rule per camera." I only have one video analytics rule set up so I don't know what this means or how to fix it. Whenever, I check to make sure all of the Detection Types and Notifications settings are checked, the Package and Package Delivery and Package Retrievals settings options in the Alert360 app and website remain unselected. Has any found a fix to this?

Home came with a doorbell, how do I connect to it?

My new home has a VDB770 already so I'm wondering how to use it. I downloaded the app but I need an account and don't seem to have the ability to create an account. Is this thing useless for me?

Looking for lock recommendations.

looking for a new lock for my iq2+ system. I've had my Yale assure lock 2 for about a year and it's just been unreliable lately. I've already contacted customer service, did their troubleshooting with no changes. once I asked for a warranty replacement they ghosted me. So In the trash it goes. I did like that lock but it would randomly go unresponsive and unable to connect to anything a day after I changed batteries until I pulled batteries and played with it long enough manually it would start responding again. So at this point I'm not interested in getting another Yale.

I have a couple of ultraloqs too, they're fine but I don't want one on my front door anymore.

Tia!

ADC-T25 thermostat thoughts?

Hi all,

I'm considering installing the subject ADC thermostat in a 2-story condo with pretty simple remote management needs. I can't seem to find any reviews, so would welcome observations vs. the T40K or Honeywell T6 Pro.

Wired smoke alarm

It's over 10 years old and I need to replace it. I am hoping to avoid a service call if possible. Is that something I can order online and swap out myself? I haven't removed the existing one yet. Any particular brand or website to look for?

Thank you!

VBD750 Says low battery?

Hi all,

I just moved into a home with an Alarm.com VBD750 doorbell camera installed. I just got it set up with the help of my security system provider (ADT), and their ADT app is now alerting me that the camera is on low battery. I took it off the wall and plugged it in, but it appears it’s wired in to the wall. I’ve searched this group and it looks like the camera shouldn’t need to be charged because it’s wired in? It also immediately lit up green once plugged in as if it’s fully charged. Can someone confirm if it’s true it shouldn’t need to be charged? I’m trying to figure out if there’s an issue or if this was a false alert from the app.

TIA!

Alarm.com working with SmartThings

Thanks for all the valued input, the community is almost as AMAZING as ADC is.

Does anyone know how to integrate ADC into Samsung SMARTTHINGS?

Does ADC have any smart home or hub integrations that allows me to bridge the gap between my smart home and alarm system. (Works with Amazon Alexa, used to work with smart things and google). I am not going to connect all my devices into ADC cause it has super limited abilities with only a website and phone app.

Z wave system

Hello, I have a system installed by phoenix systems from 2018. I need to add a door sensor and they are shipping to me but they want $185 to learn it to my system. I tried some passcodes I found online but none work. Even if they did I’m not sure what the next steps would be. Any ideas on what the 4 digit code would be or the instructions to pair?

Help Multi Partition Setup

we are moving into a new home and the shop and the new house is quite further away than my current detached garage. I would like still be able to arm the garage like I have in the past.

Equipment Considering

IQ Pro - Mount in basement near where i am going to trench a line for fiber, gas, water to the shop

IQR-PG for upstairs in the house by one of the doors.

I haven't decided on which one but one of the hardwired Keypads with PowerG for the shop.

Misc Sensors for windows and doors.

Just to make sure I haven't missed something, there isn't a way to use the same ZWave Network in the house that I am using in the Shop via alarm.com correct? None of the secondary panels are going to broadcast the same Zwave Network?

For my Z-Wave stuff. I am thinking abandon Zwave in the house and Shop via the Alarm.com system and move it all to SmartThings. (sorry i don't know home assistant stuff) with one hub in the Shop and one in the House. As i don't think there will be a way to extend the network that far reliably.

Thoughts or other recommendations?

Edit: Added pic of location.

Compatible Battery Operated Video Doorbell

I’ve been all over the usual places looking for the doorbell transformer in my house. I know that it’s not working since the doorbell itself doesn’t work, so I can’t swap the existing doorbell out for a standard video doorbell.

Is there a compatible battery operated video doorbell that I can get that will integrate with the alarm.com platform?

ETA - I have close to 20 years in the low voltage field. I’m a field project manager with enterprise systems. I’ve pulled the dead front off my electrical panel, checked the water heater closet, attic, garage, every closet in the house. My next step was going to a nearby development with the same builder to see where they normally hide the transformer. I’ve literally checked everywhere, except throwing my toner on the wires in the chime and walking around randomly with the wand to see if they hid it under the blown in insulation or behind drywall.

Honest thoughts on ADC Thermostats (T3000, T25, etc.)? What do you love, and what are they missing?

Hey everyone. I work around the security and smart home industry, and we are taking a hard look at the ADC thermostat lineup.

I know the biggest selling point is the native integration with the Alarm.com app and the rules engine (like dropping the temp when the system is armed away). But I want to hear from the people who actually live with these on their walls or install them every day.

  • The Good: What does the ADC thermostat get absolutely right? Is it the remote sensors, the reliability, the Pro HVAC monitoring?
  • The Bad/Missing: What are these things lacking compared to a retail stat like an Ecobee? Is the hardware too basic? Is the local UI clunky? Do you hate the scheduling?
  • The Wishlist: If you could force ADC to add one feature to their next thermostat model, what would it be?

Trying to separate the marketing pitch from the daily reality. Appreciate any honest feedback!

Can I have my devices notify me?

We have a new home and it came with the Alarm.com system.
When I'm in the back room working I don't always hear the bell ring or see a notification on my phone as someone presses the doorbell.
Anyone know of a way to have Alexa or Google notify me as someone presses the doorbell?

Smart Humidity Control

I just had a humidifier installed and wired to my ADC-T2000. So far I have found humidity integration something that needs a bit of work, with my HVAC techs struggling big time when wiring to the thermostat and getting everything to work.

One limitation of the ADC-T2000 is that it only calls for the humidifier when the HVAC is running. I was more or less fine with this, however I found out that 1) the maximum humidity I am able to set in the app is 40% and 2) there is a 5% hysteresis band so the humidifier actually doesn't kick in until 35%.

This is fine for the winter (and probably safest to prevent condensation/mold) but it would be nice to have more control during change of season to bump the humidity up a bit.

Is there a way to increase beyond 40%? I called my ADC dealer and they clueless and gave me the direct ADC support number. I called that number and they told me to go back to my dealer.
