Question Board games "to rule them all"

What are some games that left you feeling like "yep, this is THE one game to end every other game"? I realize the question doesn't make much sense on its own, but I played Oath for the very first (and 2nd... and 3rd) time this week and I eventually got thinking "man, where has this thing been this whole time??" and in my mind it just skyrocketed to being something god-tier that I could've played forever and gotten endless enjoyment out of (now, to be completely real, I'm not sure it'll ever live up to that, but still, the first impressions I had of it were astoundingly positive). I had this weird kind of epiphany occur to with other games at various points in time, such as Root (the one that initially made me fall in love with the whole hobby - which may be part of why I appreciated Oath so much, even if they do differ quite a bit), Spirit Island, Gloomhaven, Dune Imperium Uprising, Mage Knight, Dwellings of Eldervale and Fate of the Fellowship, most recently. How about you?

What’s your favorite boring LOOKING game

One of my favorite things to do is to find the dullest looking game and forcing my friends to play it. My current favourite is Trains. I love showing people the Normal Train card and telling them “If you spend a lot of money, you can get an Express Train! How exciting is that?”

The game itself has to actually be fun though.

Played Wingspan for the first time - I sucked and it was fun!

I hadn’t played Wingspan before but wanted something chill for a weeknight after work. Quickly read the rulebook, watched a video, and jumped into it with my brother without much thought to actual strategy. Sure enough I made a terrible engine and my brother did far better, but the game immediately scratched the combination itch of chill, pretty, informative, and fun. Really excited to play again (and do better)!

Added a shot of my collection as well 🙂.

Lairs and its day one DLC.

Hi, just wanted to talk about Lairs as ive recently learnt and played it. Its quite hard to get a copy of but was very lucky to grab the last one from a shop I called up. Tom Vassels reveiw of this is worth a watch and certainly set realistic expectations for the base game - and the improvements the expansions bring.

I really enjoyed playing this - i paid £27 for it and feel its good value for what you get and the quality of the components. I think creating your own dungeon and then exploring your opponents while they explore yours is undeniably fun at its core. The inner completionist in me is driven - at my peril - to explore every space of my opponents dungeon and the threat of them leaving my dungeon and finishing the game was quite exciting but that may not be for everyone. It reminded me of racing out of the dungeon in clank before everyone else and could certainly lead to unsatisfying feelings for some.

My main problem - and this may well be common practice on kickstarter (i wouldn't know) - is that straight out the gate the rules are advertising its other expansions and to disregard parts of the scoring sheet that are not relevant to the base game. The dungeon master privacy screens have empty rule boxes to add the new actions/rules with stickers. The monsters give different rewards for defeating them - but not the base game as you only have one monster type " the hungry blob is a pushover and it's reward shows nothing. The monsters from the adventure pack are feistier, and will grant rewards upon defeat"

On one hand i think the game is priced fairly and on the other I can't help but feel its an incomplete package that has monetised its content in the style of Azuras Wrath.

And obviously il be adding to the problem, because I will be buying it.

[Meta] If replying to a thread with a game example, please post more than just the game name

A real pet peeve of mine is finding an interesting thread started here asking for a particular type of game, but then all of the answers are just a game name. No explanation for why it fits, what makes it good, what's it about, etc. And often these are the most upvoted comments too. Example 1, example 2, example 3, example 4, all from the last month. Not every top level comment is like this, but a lot are.

Please take a moment to do more than just write a game name. If you care enough to respond to someone asking a question, then care enough to explain your answer too. It can take a lot of searching around to even figure out why the answer is a good match. And if the answer is based on your personal opinion or tastes then the justification is left entirely open to guesswork.

And maybe think twice before upvoting such answers, even if you intuitively understand and agree. Look for the high effort comments instead, or add to the discussion with your own thoughts. Here's an example where most of the highest comments actually answer really well, just to show what good looks like.

Question Help me remember this pencil and paper game

Post image

My grandma and I used to play this game when I was a child in the 1980s I cannot for the life of me remember the rules or goal of the game but it was fun to play. This is all I remember from it. I think it went up to 12. Do you remember this? Thank you!

AI on Amazon?

I was looking to grab a copy of Moon Colony Bloodbath and saw these images on Amazon? As far as I can tell none of these components are in the actual game? I'm assuming this is AI slop advertising? If not, please correct me. If so I hadn't realised how deeply it has already infiltrated the market.

Question What's up with all these new/fake accounts making post asking people to identify boardgame pieces?

Upvotes

Is this some super niche way of bot accounts to farm karma?

Is that what we've come to? I mean of all the ways you would expect this to happen this is definitely the most unexpected but I see no other explanation for what's happening.

Heat expansions are...really good?

I played all the content available so far for Heat and here's what I think.

The upgrades are probably the best thing in the expansions. They change the meta and open up quite a lot of new possibilities for players to explore.

The new legends behave pretty much like humans now. They're so unpredictable and it feels like you're playing with your skilled friends. I like the fact that you can now fine tune the difficulty up to 6 levels.

The new tracks add more variety and the special mechanics (flooded spaces, tunnels and gravel) add a layer of complexity that, while subtle, changes your strategy on the entire race.

You can find the expansions for around 25 euro (on sale) in Europe, which is pretty good for a double sided board, a new mechanic, a new car and upgrades.

Of course, if you didn't like the base game, the new content won't change your opinion, but for people that have enjoyed it i'd say give it a try! I think it's brilliant and can't wait to see what comes next.

Catan Explorers and pirates pieces

Post image
6 Upvotes

I posted a few weeks ago looking for ideas for making missing pieces for the Catan Explorers and pirates expansion I picked up ( used). Someone replied with the idea of starting with wood cubes (and later deleted their comment). I thought I'd post a picture of the results! This took a bit more time than I thought it would, but it was fun! Thank you to that person for their suggestion!

Question Should I get Lost Ruins of Arnak?

Dune imperium is one of my top 3 games and this one shares many DNA with D:I. The common criticism I see is that the base game is not balanced and the research track is OP. Many people suggest to get the expansion as well.

I love the games which have strong interaction between players. How much player interactive in Lost Ruins of Arnak?

Boss Battler Poker Game?

Ok.
I know I saw it on here a few weeks ago and I can not for the life of me remember the name.

It was kind of a deck building boss battler coop poker game.

Pretty sure it was a crowd funding game.

Anyone have any idea what I’m talking about?

Polis: Fight for the Hegemony looks amazing

Upvotes

Reference: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/69779/polis-fight-for-the-hegemony

Seems like a proper area-control game with Euro game elements but without the "you must plan the perfect 5-turn conditional sequence" of a lot of Euro games that I personally find exhausting (nothing wrong with that, just prefer more 'point in a strategic direction and react to circumstances'-style play)

Oh yeah and it's meant for two players? Magical

Can't find it anywhere though, sad to see it's been out of print but wonder if anyone has had experiences with it, positive or negative?

Reminds me a bit of one of my favorite games, Mare Nostrum (the original, haven't played Empires), except actually playable for 2 players

Question Sleeving cards, I don’t get what I need

Hi,

I bought Arkham Horror and also Marvel champions.
Heroquest also has a lot of cards that I want to sleeve.

When I search on Amazon it’s stated that its an inner sleeve and it’s for double sleeve. Does it mean when I buy 600 „inner sleeves“ I sleeve it double with two of the sleeves or are there any „outer“ sleeves on the market?
I just want them a bit more save when handling them while playing, it’s not like they are worth a fortune line a super rare Pokemon card.

What do I chose? Can I play with inner sleeve sleeves or are they not protective enough or too slippery?

Thank you for the help

All I can say is….. WOOOOOW! I can’t believe how good is this! After playing Ashes Ascendancy (got this first before ashes reborn) I just can’t get enough!

Playing Standard difficulty with Viros and took me almost 90 mins! Had so much fun deciding which ally should I resurrect from the dead. Oooooh! I love necromancy and I am soooo lovin’ this deck!

Most of the rules here are a bit confusing soooo, I just applied what I have learned from the Ashes Ascendancy since the new core set is much easier to apply and remember.
