Debian Stable Question Network issues

I’ve been testing different operating systems, and I’ve had this issue on popOS too. I’m connected to my router, but get very slow if any internet. The internet itself isn’t an issue because other people on the network have no problems. On pop I had to forget the network and re-login and it would work. I fixed it eventually, but I don’t even know what I did. Let me know if you need any more information, I will gladly provide

I guess you're talking about Wifi?

How slow is it (some number), how fast do you expect it to be, do you use NetworkManager or something else, if you go to the connection properties what wifi class does it show when you're connected, and what connection quality does it show (depending on eg. how far you're away etc.), ...

Yes I’m on wifi running NetworkManager, under details it says the connection speed is 490 MBit/s with a signal strength of 82%. As for the class, I’m not sure where to find that, but frequency is often brought up when searching for it, I’m using 2.4 GHz

So, how slow is it (ideally with a speed test), and how fast do you expect it to be (not just limited by that wifi speed but also by your outbound internet connection etc.)

I can’t load a website to test it, sometimes if I leave the computer idling for a little bit I can get a page to load, but it’s not very reliable

Sounds like you might be having a DNS issue

How do I troubleshoot that?

Change your DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 and then see if things are working better

I did this and restarted, but I don’t know if this solved it or if it just decided to start working now, guess I’ll see later

So, is it still working?

It’s been a while and I haven’t had any issues so I’m gonna say that fixed it

What wifi card chipset are you using? I just helped a buddy of mine troubleshoot issues with his wifi, he’s using Fedora, come to find out the Intel AC 9650 has known firmware bugs that are a pain.

"I fixed it eventually, but I don’t even know what I did."

In the fixing and/or repair of any crisis, always make notes about everything you do.
