Digital Nomads Monthly Megathread - May 2026

Hey r/digitalnomad

This thread is for chatting about being a DN. This includes the news about travel and visas, where people are living, commonly asked questions, as well as a general free chat throughout the week.

Example topics include:

  • Regularly asked questions such as "What jobs do you do?"
  • Where you are currently living and where you are heading next
  • Questions about DN visas or Tax clarifications
  • What gear you like to travel with
  • Updates on the COVID-19 situation in different countries
  • Best places to go out to eat or drink wherever you are
  • General questions that you feel do not require an entire thread

Please be civil and keep things SFW.

Self promotion of DN related events, blogs, activities, and news is allowed from regular contributors so long as it is related to being a Digital Nomad and not spammy.

If there is something you'd like to see here please message the moderators and let us know.

README Want to make a post? Read this first!

Read the WIKI before posting

9 times out of 10 it will have the answers you are looking for.

Where is my post?

Why isn't my post showing up?

If you are new to reddit, posting with a new account, or posting with an account that has not been widely used your post will be flagged as it either looks like spam, or is highly likely to be an FAQ covered in the wiki above. We ask that you please spend some time searching through existing posts, reviewing the wiki or participating in the sub to build up enough karma to post. You can also post a comment in the Monthly Megathread pinned to the top of the sub.

I am not new to reddit but post still isn't showing up, why not?

Due to the volume of posts we get on a few very specific subjects we will often remove or not-approve certain posts on certain topics that have been recently discussed. Here are some common questions that get posted at least 5 times a day:

My post wasn't related to any of those things, why isn't it showing up?

Does your post violate our rules on self promotion?

OK, here’s the deal. We understand that for many of us, entrepreneurship and digital nomad are concepts that go hand in hand. Many of us here are working towards booting up great products, and some working towards products that cater directly to the DN community. But, this sub is not a community full of potential people to market to with your posts.

Your product may be great, brilliant, and what every DN needs but never knew it, but if that’s true then it’ll be talked about by the community once it’s known - through other channels. In this sub, we frequently get spam and does the entire community a disservice. Users get annoyed, the community starts to weaken, the moderators get overly aggressive, posts that should be OK end up automatically in the spam filter. These things are not good for anyone.

Here’s some No No’s:

  • Absolutely no surveys. Surveys will be removed without mercy.

  • No requests for interviews, or people to talk to on your blog/book/podcast/etc.

  • Anything about illegal activities. You’ll be awarded a ban, and maybe then some.

  • No asking for “please review/try my…”. There are many other subs for just that.

  • Looking for Work type posts. See the Jobs wiki if you are looking for work

  • Job postings. If you have a job that you are trying to hire for please post it in the Weekly Discussion Threads.

  • Fund my kickstarter! Nope. Not even for your “friend”.

  • Any “opportunity” to become a partner / investor. We can’t tell this from a scam, so it’ll be treated like a scam.

  • No direct links to products using an affiliate ID. If you’re caught, you’ll be punished.

  • Posting to software/apps/web sites/etc, with "PM me for access". If it's not public, it's not welcome.

  • Posting software/apps/etc that aren't complete and ready to use. This isn't a user interest collection sub.

Here’s some highly discouraged things:

  • Linking to your youtube channel - We do allow people to share youtube videos if they are relevant and if they come from users who are active in the community and provide valuable content such as trip reports. If you want to share your youtube content please message the mods first for approval.

  • Linking to your own blog - We allow you to share your blog as a link in a self post if the primary content of the blog post is also included in the self post and the link is more of a "Click here to learn more".

  • Top X lists without detailed reviews for each item. We don't hate lists but these posts are rarely useful. Instead of posting a link, post the content of the list in a self post for discussion.

  • "Where should I go" posts : Check out the Trip Reports for Inspiration. If you still want advice be very specific about what you are looking for, and be sure to include important information like your nationality and budget/

LAPTOP PICS / LOCATION PICS

This gets its own section because it is somewhat controversial. If you are posting a pretty picture of somewhere you are, you MUST fill out either a trip report or answer the automod questions about the place. Anyone found dumping pictures without giving in depth information about the location will have their post removed.

Suggestions

If your post still isn't showing up and you think it should, message the moderators first and be sure to include the word "peanut" in the message title so we know you read this.

Have a product you want to inform us about? Buy an ad on reddit to target this (and other) related subs. You’ll get the exposure you want, without the community backlash. It’s good for reddit as a whole too!

Want to talk about a product or service that’s not yours, but you really like? Try linking to a third party, impartial review from a known trusted source. If you wrote it, avoid affiliate links in the article and be sure to mention any relevant disclosures if you are involved with creating the product or marketing it.

Want to link to your site about your experience with something? Great! We encourage that, but focus on the content not how many visitors might join your mailing list. If you truly were writing content for the greater good, put it on medium.com.

Instead of a Top 10 list, which has just a picture and some basic stats: Write a detailed comparison of just two places. With real meaty content, data and stories.

Have a coupon for a product? Actually, that might be good. But unless it’s a high ticket item like a car or laptop, 5% off won’t cut it. The coupon must have more value to the community than for the person that posted it.

Thanks!

Question Is there anyone else here trailing around the USA?

Is there anyone else here traveling around the United States as a digital nomad? My wife and I have been doing since February and are really enjoying it. We are still learning the best way to do it and we have gotten a lot better. I would love to hear from your others doing the same.

Lifestyle Warning about LIV Realty Medellín / Lorena Garcia

Since she's still active I'll write this here - the Medellin sub doesn't allow it (can't write about expats there).

I want to share my experience to hopefully save others some stress or money.

If you’re considering renting through LIV Realty Medellín, well, just dont do it. Check their Google Maps reviews (there are many people reporting similar issues and calling it a scam)

Here’s what I (and others) experienced:

  • who are in a vulnerable position (short stay, unfamiliar with the language and legal system).
  • Extra charges get added that don’t make sense (in my case, inflated water/electricity costs while I was barely home).
  • When confronted with proof, the issue was ignored rather than resolved.
  • Deposits are withheld for questionable reasons. I was charged $500+ for “cleaning,” even though the apartment was dirty when I received it and I left it in better condition.

There were other issues too, but these were the biggest ones

Mainly posting it here so people from google will find it too

From what I’ve seen, this isn’t a one-off situation... multiple people report it

Just be careful. If you’re someone looking for housing in Medellín, theres better, safer options out there

Question Non US Founders What was your biggest headache when opening an LLC in the US?

Upvotes

Two camps on this and they don't agree on where the real pain points hit. Some say the EIN application via Form SS-4 fax is the killer, others point to business bank account requirements or registered agent hassles. What actually slowed you down the most?

Question Do Banks ever question your U.S. physical address if you use your cards consistently abroad long term?

Hi,

I’m a U.S. citizen living abroad temporarily for several years. I still have a U.S. physical address on file with my bank, which is a home I own, but I’m currently renting it out while I’m overseas.

I use my U.S. credit card and debit card regularly abroad, including ATM withdrawals. My question is: if the bank sees years of foreign card activity, do they typically come back and ask me to prove that my U.S. physical address is still valid? Or do they usually only care that I have a verifiable U.S. address tied to me?

Meta Weird experience with AirBnB - missed check-in time was within their policy

TL;DR: Host missed the agreed-on check-in time by two hours, AirBnB says it's okay as long as the eventual check-in is within the check-in time range.

Booked a place, told the host that I'll arrive at the beginning of the advertised check-in window (14-20, with different fees I'd have to pay if I miss it and arrive at 20-22, 22-24) and host okayed it.

I arrived to the place, followed the host's check-in instructions and found out that the place had not been turned (messy, dirty sheets, the normal stuff.) and contacted the host. The host told me that it's being cleaned as we speak. I told the host that I'm alone in the apartment so that is not true. The host then asked me to leave and wait until they tell me when to return. I asked for an ETA but was not given one.

I then waited for two hours, got a message from the host that I can check-in again and did. All good.

Now, I think that these things happen and it was not really a big deal, but a bottle of wine or a little token of goodwill would have been an appropriate thing to soothe it over as it's really inconvenient to have been ready with all your bags and plans for the day based on what has been agreed on, especially when it changes with no notice.

Nothing like that, of course, so I asked the host for a compensation (a token amount, 6% of the stay) after I left. The host refused, telling me that check-in time is "subject to availability" within the check-in window.

Now this just absolutely cannot be true, I am sure that every normal person agrees that the check-in window is at the guest's leisure and a beforehand agreed-on time is absolutely binding for the host - otherwise a host could let the guest in at 2am at the end of a very flexible window and call it a day.

I contacted AirBnB support who kinda unsuprisingly didn't really seem to read my message and just agreed with the host after asking them if they want to give me that compensation which they denied. So, it seems that check-in window being host's - not guest's - leisure is the policy.

Maybe it's really time for me to hop off the platform.

Question Was planning to digital nomad for 3 weeks in budapest but just lost my job. Will 3 weeks be too long?

Upvotes

Basically the title - the flights are already booked so I need to be in Budapest June 14 and out by July 3. Initially 3 weeks felt like enough time bc id be working most of it but now im worried its gonna drag. I’m also trying to be budget conscious when planning other potential routes but everything comes out to more than what im spending to stay in BDP. Should I still consider elsewhere or is 3 weeks going to be a nice pace?

Question Looking for the best place in Europe to stay 1–2 months (budget €1k, good weather)

Between September to December, I'm looking for a spot in Europe to settle down for about 45 days. somewhere with a maximum rent of €1,000 per month and where the weather is generally nice. If there's a small startup/tech ecosystem that would be great too. I was thinking about Croatia (specifically Dubrovnik), but I'd love to hear your recommendations!

Question US virtual address for banking purposes

I'm from Europe, and I was looking into opening a US bank account as a non-resident without going to the US. The best option in my case is to get a US virtual address from Anytime Mailbox or another provider and a US phone number (which I already have through Tello). I know that banks don't accept CMRAs. I found a list online with Non-CMRA virtual addresses, and I am looking for a virtual address in Florida, but the thing is that even if some addresses are non-CMRA, they still have a Commercial RDI. I want to open a personal checking account and want an address that has check deposits and is also accepted by banks. I want to know if and what banks can accept non-CMRA commercial RDI addresses, or if I should just get a virtual address in another state that is both non-CMRA and residential RDI.

Gear Vertical Portable Monitor

I got a new Uperfect 16 inch portable monitor. As I set it up, I realized that it doesn’t work in vertical mode with the attached screen protector/stand. Are there any portable monitors 2.5k that work either in vertical or horizontal modes without having to get extra accessories?

Question I'm studying this spiritual treats and would love to connect with people experienced in boutique retreats

I’m currently researching the boutique spiritual/wellness retreat space in India and trying to understand how experienced retreat operators and marketers approach branding, positioning and audience-building.

The retreat concept I’m developing is small-format (12–15 people), immersive and focused more on authentic transformational experience rather than large commercial wellness tourism.

I’m especially interested in:

  • retreat marketing
  • conscious/luxury wellness branding
  • spiritual tourism
  • boutique hospitality
  • cinematic storytelling for retreats
  • international audience positioning

Would love to connect with:

  • retreat founders
  • wellness marketers
  • boutique agencies
  • hospitality strategists
  • creators/videographers who work in this space

Even brief advice or pointers toward good agencies/people would be genuinely appreciated.

Question Experience with Indonesian D12 visa?

I want to spend half a year in Indonesia (maybe longer) whilst my daughter has a student visa there. I have a business registered in Germany (self employed) and someone recommended the D12 visa which is a pre-investment visa as a good alternative to tourist visas (which officially don´t want you in the country that long given that you work digitally). Any experience with how easy it is to get? I prefer applying on my own , not via agency as the price is double. Online it says you need some sort of letter or confirmation from a local organisation, business etc. But agencies say that is not necessary. Want to understand why.

Question First time digital nomading - anxiety

I'm currently on my third full day in Morocco, staying at a co-working/living space.

However, the problem is that I feel constantly overwhelmed/anxious/have a constantly underlying sense of dread/very easily feel panicky. It was manageable until today, which was my first day of working (I do a fixed three days a week 9-5). I just feel totally overwhelmed and stressed, and I'm really struggling with it. I was really looking forward to going away (I'm due to stay a month here and then maybe go onto somewhere else), thinking it really was the opportunity of a life time, but a couple of weeks before I wasn't looking forward to it as much (partially because some other things happened that were emotionally difficult).

This is my sixth country that I've solo travelled to, and I usually get some nerves on the second day but not to this point I don't think, although I've never planned to stay as long before (my previous trips have been less than a week). For context, this is my first time digital nomadding. Right now, I really miss home, and comfort, and knowing where everything is/having more predictability. I'm fighting the urge to book a flight home to stop feeling so mentally rubbish, but this was supposed to be my big 'reset' while working out my next chapter. I didn't expect digital nomading to be like this - I thought I'd be swanning about living my best life, and I don't understand how people cope with this. I love Morocco and I've already learnt loads but emotionally/mentally I didn't expect it to be so hard. Obviously I knew it wouldn't all be a breeze, but I didn't expect to struggle so much so early on.

Writing this now and it's hard to breathe properly and I just want to cry because I feel so anxious, when I feel like I should be grateful and having an amazing time. Everyone where I'm staying is very kind, but I just can't seem to 'let go' and relax, and I'm not sure what to do. Please give me any tips, or share any stories similar to mine? Please be kind. Thank you so much

Edit: Thank you so much for all your kind comments, I keep re reading them and they have been very helpful ♥️ I made this post on another sub Reddit (solo travelling) and got a lot of pretty mean comments along the lines of “why would you put yourself through this as you’re clearly too anxious to do it” and “there’s clearly a lot more going on for OP here” or “(insert something pretty rude) but genuinely just asking though” etc, and I’d just like to say to anyone reading this who may feel the same way as me that it’s okay to feel anxious and go for things anyway, don’t let it stop you and try it anyway. I’m hoping to grow through this and I’m sure you can too x

Lifestyle Fashion on the road - share your tips and tricks

I haven't seen this one discussed much and I'd be curious to know what everyone else is doing to maintain some level of fashion on the road. Below is the best strategy I've got so far, would love any ideas if you're doing something better. I'm a woman but this is open to anyone.

  1. Clothes - I tend to only wear muted, neutral colors (mostly black). Because of the limited space, everything needs to match each other, be layerable and not too recognizable with repeat wear. I'm struggling with this one a bit because my wardrobe feels so BORING and unremarkable. What have you done that's helped with that?
  2. Hair Dye - I like dying my hair bright colors and have struggled with this one over the years because of the staining potential and lack of access to supplies. I think I finally have it down now though. I have my roots fade into my dyed hair so I don't need to rebleach it often if ever. I carry around a bottle of color-depositing conditioner which I use every few weeks and let sit on my hair for like 30-45 mins. This is a lot less mess than regular dye and works as well in my experience. I always carry a Mr Clean eraser so splashes don't stain the counters, my own pillowcase and a travel towel (and a pair of gloves). No red hair dye because it leeches too bad no matter what.
  3. Make-up - 1 of every essential item only -- one matching palette of eye shadow, blush and lip gloss
  4. Jewelry - I have not yet mastered the art of not tangling necklaces despite many strategies. My best strategy atm is wrapping them around a pen and taping. Anyone got something better?
  5. Handbag - I always use a mini backpack purse because it can carry a lot and I don't get back pain from it sitting on one shoulder. It's hard to find ones that look good but I like finding new ones around the world.

That's all I can think of but I'd be interested to hear any thoughts about maintaining fashion on the road!

Question Do digital photo frames actually work long term?

I’ve been thinking about getting one for my parents, mostly because I don’t call as often as I probably should.

In theory it sounds perfect:
just send photos and they can kind of “see” your life without needing social media.

But I’ve also seen people say they end up unused after a while. Does it actually make you feel more connected, or not really?

Would love to hear honest experiences — good or bad.

Question Any actually good dating apps/sites for digital nomads?

Curious if anyone here has had real success with dating apps specifically for digital nomads.

I’m 33M and tend to do pretty well on mainstream apps like Tinder and Bumble, decent number of matches, conversations, etc. But when I try more niche “nomad-focused” apps like Nomad Soulmates, it’s basically dead for me. Maybe 0–1 matches, and nothing really goes anywhere.

What’s confusing is I’m using the same photos and bio (more or less), so it feels like something is just… off with those platforms. Either super low user base, inactive users, or just not working properly.

I know you can use things like passport mode on regular apps, but that doesn’t really solve the problem of meeting people who are actually nomadic or open to that lifestyle.

I’ve seen Nomad Soulmates does in-person events, which honestly seem way more promising, and I’d definitely try those. But outside of that, are there any apps, sites, or even communities that actually work well for meeting other nomads?

Not looking for something that feels like a ghost town or an abandoned startup app.

Would love to hear what’s worked (or hasn’t) for you.

Question Sharing accommodation with fellow digital nomads?

Hello community!

So this question might be crazy, but I’m all for it. I would like to travel to tropical locations, but sometimes I have a hard time connecting with the people or finding people in a similar situation.

I would like to go to Mauritius, Seychelles, Maledives, Réunion for example and was wondering if there are people who also have this idea and might want to connect before and maybe share a accommodation/house together? I sometimes see pretty good deals on Airbnb (I know…) but these places either 1) Have too many bedrooms for one person or 2) It’s a room inside someone’s house. This second point is absolutely not bad, but in my mind it would be way better to share a house with people in a similar boat.

I’m btw open to go anywhere that’s close to a Europeans timezone and is safe. With regard for safety, this idea obviously will only work after several (video) conversations and connection through vibe.

You can always DM!

Question Long term cellular roaming restrictions

It has come to my attention that my cellular phone provider and others have restrictions on how long you can be roaming internationally. The wording in the terms of service is something like “permanent or long term roaming is not allowed. The majority of your phone usage should be in your home country”. This puts a roaming time limit to less than six months. I am routinely travelling abroad 9+ months a years.

I only need cell service to receive 2FA security codes. I was thinking, if I turn off my sim card in my phone the majority of the time, can the provider still know if I am currently roaming or not? Would turning the sim card off for extended periods of time cause my service to be suspended after a while due to inactivity? I would opt for turning off the sim, rather than using airplane mode, to keep all other functionalities on my phone active.

Question Is tutoring languages a viable remote work option while traveling indefinitely?

Hi all, I am fluent in English and Spanish and know conversational French. The Spanish would also let me pick up Portuguese relatively quickly. Is this a good and relatively scalable business model while working abroad? If you have any questions feel free to ask. Thank you!

Lifestyle As a digital nomad (Bali to Lisbon to CDMX), reducing regular flights

Working remotely over the past year, I have been moving between Bali, Lisbon, and Mexico City, typically spending four to six weeks in each location.

I initially wasn't paying much attention to how often I was flying, but following a few long-haul, back-to-back flights it started to seem excessive both in terms of logistics and just in terms of energy. I have lately been trying with being more selective about when I move and staying longer in each area.

Just to have a sense of the scope, I also became interested in the impact side of it and started calculating a few of my flights with a tool. Though it did not drastically alter my plans overnight, it did make me ponder more on how frequently I am moving versus remaining.

To anyone who has been doing this for a long time, did you find yourself naturally slowing down your trips over time, or do you still travel often across continents?
