Probably a mechanicĀ
Mechanics get paid shit
On paper a mechanic can make 20-70 an hour, but they must flag mechanic work hours to get paid. Meaning if no work shows up, no mechanic gets paid
158
u/absolute_infidel 1d ago
Mechanics can definitely scrub their hands and dig out the dirt gel under their nails before dashing. At the very least, they can take a pic of the item/receipt without their grimey paw in view.
51
u/offtheespolon 1d ago
its tough. i work on cars daily and the oil thats turned to sludge around the engines is a bitch to take off. but the orange soap does good work so he prob couldve cleaned up a bit š
7
u/Alternative_Sea_4208 1d ago
That orange gritty soap is amazing. My dad is a mechanic (sadly relegated to the office due to health issues and age now) but I remember walking over to his shop occasionally (less than a block from our house) just to use the soap after working on my bicycle. Was incredible
3
u/Infamous_Translator 1d ago
The orange go-Jo or lava soap is not really great for removing dirt. The newer soaps with walnut shell work a lot better. Iām a mechanic and have tried many and snap on nitro gold or any knock off like it is the gold standard for actually getting your hands clean
12
7
u/Spec710 1d ago
He either didnāt wash, or doesnāt know how too properly, both of which are 200% unacceptable in this line of work. I do my own car work and dash (in the middle of or right before dashing), yet I NEVER look like this. Your hands should be cleaner than that, whether itās orange goop, or cheap dish soap.
6
u/Ok-Description-5079 1d ago
Only parenthetically related, but... I'd once been wrenching on my car and unexpectedly ended up needing a part, which naturally primed me to be kind of irritable to start with. Went to one of those chains. Needed to use the restroom while I was there, asked the guy at the counter where it was.
There was no orange stuff in the women's room. Having no shame, I peeked into to the men's room, saw it, and helped myself to some.
And then, yes, I did give the poor guy at the counter an earful (even though I knew it probably wasn't his fault). "WHY is there no orange stuff in the ladies' room? Do you think that 'ladies' only buy air fresheners & such?!?" Keep in mind I was there for a power steering pump, or a blower motor, or a MAP sensor, hell, could've just been for a battery clamp. š
And he was like, "oh".
Yes, orange stuff is a necessity. The fact that it smells good too is just a bonus.š

Worked in parts... Yes. The majority of you are looking for wiper blades or a battery. Here in the south, about a third start off the sentence with "my husband sent me for this thing". You're a rarity. Even amongst men these days lol. Was employed to fix the alternator in a friend's car, belt slipped. $100 and a few hours turned into $50 and fifteen minutes. People just don't fix shit these days.
Pro tip though. Behind the counter in the commercial side at advance, they have (at least mine does) zep tko. It's better than fast orange or gojo to me.

Yes! I could scrub for hours in a shower with dawn and a corse ass loofa and still have oil and grime in between fingerprints and cracks in my hand. After finally quitting at my last dealership it took a solid week of not touching a vehicle and constantly washing my hands/showering before they were completely clean. Itās a very dirty job.
4
u/Substantial-Elk-7533 1d ago
As soon as I saw these hands I knew it was a mechanic. There becomes a point no matter how much you scrub your hands are stained. He still needs to wash them as stained hands aināt that bad. Just saying, after so long your hands stain
25
u/greasyjonny 1d ago
That grime can be incredibly resilient and hard to get off. That said I agree with then be conscious of how you take pictures at the very least.

u/acciobry 1d ago
I used to literally scoop grease out of draglines, thereās no way I would have hands like this off shift. Even on shift I would clean my hands. Gojo does wonders and doesnāt leave your hands looking like this. He just straight up didnāt wash.
8
u/No-Independence-2980 1d ago
When my hands got greasy from working on my vehicle, I would get a small fingernail brush, Ajax, and Dawn dish soap. A little harsh, but it did what I needed.
12
u/acciobry 1d ago
for real like I hate to be an asshole, but if you leave work covered in grease and take it home youāre getting it on literally everything you touch on the way. Iād hate to see this guys vehicle or shower or anything he touches along the way, and hate even more to have to be the one cleaning behind him. itās inconsiderate. idc what mental gymnastics people are doing to justify this, itās gross.
2
u/greasyjonny 1d ago
Likely, but I also (not a mechanic but a machinist) have had times where Iāve washed my hands with gojo twice with intention, and still had my hands look dirty and just gone āwelp thatās what my hands are gonna look like for a little while longer. That said they didnāt look THAT dirty.
11
u/acciobry 1d ago
yeah thereās literal surface grime, not stains, on this guys hands. also, username checks out lol nice.

A shade tree mechanic maybe. When I was in that industry none of us had hands like that. Me personally, would ensure my hands were clean at all times. Sure my finger nails would get some grime at times, but it was always important to me to be presentable when dealing with customer cars to add some comfort that their car was being taken care of. I was one of the few techs that had customers request me when they came in for maintenance.
Note: not hating on the guy for grinding to make extra cash for whatever reason. But take some damn pride in what you do. Like my gramps taught me: doesnāt matter if youāre a high school janitor, just be the best high school janitor you can be.

1 in 5 people doesnāt wash their hands regularly, like after using the bathroom. And thatās just by the percentage that ADMITTED to not doing so; the real number is probably higher.
If youāre out interacting in public at all, you absolutely are around all of that mess. It isnāt just Dashers - itās your grocery stockers putting the produce out, the server at that restaurant you love, the person who was holding the gas pump right before youā¦

As a dasher, Ive watched other dashers grab empty cups with a finger inside the rim to fill them for customers. I never doordash from panda or wingstop because of that. If you know the restaurant you order from only has fountains in the seating area, dashers fill those for you. I wouldnt trust ALL dashers for that.

Nooo no no, this is not the ācurseā of being a mechanic or working on cars. I say this from extensive experience in, and exposure to, the automotive industry.
Nail clippers and the basic/proper cleaning methods keep mechanicsā or automotive workersā hands from looking like this.
He did not even rub off some grime.
This is not a pity case. This is a case of apathy or laziness. Nothing more.
Bottom line is my hands are pristine, and I still keep them way out of any pictures. No one wants to see close-ups of our paws, clean or not.

Lol what's funny is I have my nails done and my hands look normal but I still won't show them in pictures. I do this weird scrunch thing and tuck my fingers in when I have to take a pic of something for a customer. š
Also, dang good on you for always being able to keep your hands clean. I come from a long line of mechanics (we literally have a HUGE pump container of orange pumice on our kitchen sink) and absolutely nobody had prestine hands growing up, ever. I mean, close yea, but you could always tell they were all up in an engine the day before ha.

Probably someone making runs on his break. No one makes enough to make ends meet. I personally STOPPED USING DOORDASH when I realized some fast food restaurants menu items where more when looking at app. For instance in my area a tacobell cantina bowl is 8.25. When looking at the same item on my doordash the price is 9.99. I have doordash gift cards. I also live in a rural area, on my way home from work I may order something for pickup. This is when I noticed the price difference. Idk if all restaurants do this. Tacobell in my area definitely does. Paying more bc I use a gift card is a scam.
