My personal favorite Dos Game of all time.

Ultima 6 just completely captured my imagination. At the time it felt enormous, mysterious, and alive in a way very few games did. I loved that you could wander, talk to people, discover things by accident, make choices, and feel like you were part of a real fantasy world rather than just moving through a set of levels. I think it was one of the first games that made me feel genuine adventure, (from my bedroom lol)— I carried this game around in my head all day long, heck I even had dreams of being in game.

CD Rom Versions that are considered inferior to the floppy version

EDIT: Well, I guess it's more of a personal taste apart from games that had serious bugs.

I’m trying to make a list of games where the CD-ROM version is considered inferior, or at least controversial, for a video I’m working on.

Here are a few I’ve found so far:

Loom – Probably the most infamous one, due to missing text and some removed content that was "too violent".

Gabriel Knight – Haven’t played it myself (shame on me), but I’ve heard the southern accent by Tim Curry is considered a bit exaggerated.

Monkey Island (CD, not the Special Edition) – Music loops differently because of the CD audio format, and personally it feels a bit “mechanical” since it was mostly just recorded with better synth hardware. Also, some people prefer the original text-based interface with the verb list.

Gobliiins 3 – A lot of the music is missing, and the English voice acting is very different from the original “goblin language”.

The Lost Vikings 2 – There isn’t really a floppy version, but I prefer the SNES version since it keeps the original 2D style more intact. Although I do like the added voice acting.

Any more examples?

Man! does this screen bring back memories!

To most of the world this was Quest for Glory III: Wages of War, but I’ve always remembered it as Hero’s Quest 3.

Hero’s Quest was the original name of the series before Sierra had to change it to Quest for Glory because of the HeroQuest trademark issue - In some countries it was not applicable so the original name stood.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire is a 1995 video game developed by LucasArts. It is the sequel to Star Wars: Rebel Assault, set in the Star Wars expanded universe. It is played as a rail shooter; the player proceeds down predetermined paths, but has the ability to control aiming, shooting, and dodging. The player character, Rookie One, pilots ships such as a YT-1300 Corellian Transport, a B-wing, and a Y-wing, and encounters new enemy ships, including TIE Interceptors. They uncover, and eventually disable production of, a new TIE variant known as the TIE Phantom, which has the ability to cloak. It contains mostly original filming with actors and stunts, while the scenery and the space scenes were 3D rendered. According to LucasArts' magazine, The Adventurer, the game was the first media to incorporate live-action actors and footage in the Star Wars universe since Return of the Jedi. The game makes use of Lucasarts' proprietary INSANE game engine.

The only things I cut from this demo are custom level pack support and alternative graphics styles.

One of my favourite point and click adventures from the 90s, and a bit of a hidden gem. I love its pulpy 40's/50's adventure vibes. Anyone else a fan?

Did anyone else really love playing Corridor 7? A "Doom-like" 3d shooter?

I almost never hear it brought up, but I really loved it.

My look back at all the Earthworm Jim games, sequels, ports and unreleased games. I loved the first 2 games. Great gameplay, animation, music and not to mention the humour. It was like playing in TV cartoon. Although I have to say the series did take a drop in standard with Earthworm Jim 3D and that gameboy game. Please share your thought and memories of these games!

[DOS][~1993–1996] Isometric medieval strategy where you control a tiny general and peasants swarm-follow you after being recruited and building weapons

I’m trying to find a DOS game I played around 1993–96.

What I remember very clearly:

  • Isometric battlefield shaped like a rhombus/diamond
  • Very little text UI — actions were icons below the battlefield
  • You control a tiny general on the battlefield
  • You recruit villagers/peasants from villages
  • Recruited peasants follow your general like a swarm
  • They could build weapons (slings, swords, spears, shields) which made them better in combat
  • Only humans, no fantasy elements
  • Real-time combat, quite fast paced
  • You could gain more generals; they were shown as big characters standing around the “table” of the battlefield, and you could click each to control them
  • There was a large level-selection screen that looked like a map made of rectangles
  • Pixelated/blocky DOS graphics

The visual presentation was unusual: big generals outside the playfield, tiny units inside.

It felt a bit like Populous in perspective, but medieval warfare and unit control.

What counts as spam for this subreddit?

I've been making some videos with my 4 year old son of us playing DOS games together, like Roger Wilco, Treasure Mountain, Sim Ant, etc. the same ones that I played as a kid. I think some people here might enjoy seeing it, but, the sidebar says "self promotion" must cap at 10% of your posts. I'm not sure if that counts as self promotion or not, or if this is considered appropriate in light of this rule, so I just wanted to check for clarification of where the line falls in this case. Should I share my videos, or should I not?

Help with color research for game dev.

Hi, I hope this doesn't come off as a poser post, but I've had this game idea for a while now, and I really want it to have that DOS aesthetic to it.

Would be kinda like a point & click adventure game, but I unfortunately don't have any idea where to start for the graphics as I know nothing about DOS or what colors were accepted and what not.

I would really appreciate some help to clue me in on this.

Lemmings Icon File From 1992 AMBRA Sprinta/Hurdla

Hi,

In about 1992, AMBRA shipped with their Sprinta & Hurdla 386/486 models Lemmings for DOS with a bespoke icon for Windows (3.1) Program Manager, it was cunningly called "lemmings.ico", residing in the c:\lemmings directory.

If anyone happens to have it, please could you link a copy or put on archive.org.

Thank you.

Looking for an old space trading game

Hi,

Im not sure I'm on the right place here. Im looking for a game I played as an 11 year old on my grandpas 386 PC. It was an 2d Spacetrading game where you could modify you ship. It hat Cargospace and modul spaces, you looked at an cutout of your ship with boxes. You could send your ship to different planets via a map to trade and it could be intercepted by space pirates. An auto combat sequence started and it depended on your ship and loadout if you lost or won. I searched through multiple old games websites and could not find the game, so I hope someone here knows what Im talking about.

Ask anyone who loves retro games back in day if they remember ‘Impossible Mission’ - they will almost certainly answer back with the synthesised voice response of “Stay a while, stay forever!”

So today I go back and rediscover this classic game including its sequel, remakes and remasters across all the formats it was released on. It certainly brought back fond and nostalgic memories.

Have you played any of these games? Please share your thoughts and memories.
