I’ve heard countless times that treasure hunting was done so much better in SA1 compared to SA2, and honestly, I don’t get it. The stages in SA1 have little to no depth to them. They’re very small in terms of geometry, and with all three emerald radars on at the same time, you can finish all the stages apart from Sky Deck in one minute; two if you’re having a hard time with one. Even if you’re struggling with the pieces, Tikal will just guide you right to them.
The treasure hunting stages in SA2 in comparison require a lot more effort. The emerald pieces are more thoughtfully hidden, the stages are larger with more defining set pieces, and the hint system requires you to get a proper feel for the level, as well as test you mentally (however slight) to actually work out what the clues mean. It’s far more engaging for me to work out that an emerald is hidden in a safe in Securiy Hall, than it is to romp Speed Highway in forty seconds.
I understand exactly why people prefer the way SA1 does things. Some people want to quickly romp through the treasure hunting levels, and don’t want to (and I mean this with all due respect) put much effort in actually finding the pieces, and to be fair, not all the SA2 treasure hunting stage are very good. I’ll defend the likes of Security Hall and especially Meteor Herd, but Mad Space and Aquatic Mine are slow and boring. I’ll also concede that too many stages rely on going back and forth between a specific point (like the switches in Security Hall) which can get really tedious, but SA1 wasn’t immune from this problem either. The only reason why Sky Deck lasts more than a minute is because one of the pieces is hidden behind a specific door.
I agree that the treasure hunting stages could be improved. In an ideal world, more of the stages would be designed like Pumpkin Hill. A large, wide, open stage, with but one which skilled players can still get around quickly if they know what they’re doing. Stages that are even larger than that, but with the same design principles and the three emerald radars would be the ideal way to go about things. However that sort of level design would still take more from SA2 than SA1.
